Lost Chow in Valparaiso, In/ Shy Tai Mai

Post by Jeff&Vicki »

Shy was picked up from AC by his owner, they tried to give him to someone near the Wal-Mart and he got loose.
This is the Chow that we listed in Chows Needing a home last month.
Link to post: http://www.chowchow.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6245

Denise will take him if he can be caught.

Aparently the owners aren't putting any time in trying to find him.
He is in Valparaiso about 45 minutes from Chicago a little south of I-80/90
He is still in the area of the Wal-Mart and the Animal Control is on the lookout.
He has been spotted several times but they can't catch him.
Listed on Petfinder/lost

Guess you all have have already posted on K9 amber alert, graigslist, missing dog websites? Checked all the websites for the sorrunding shelters that don't post on petfinder. Lost and found dogs at shelters are not posted on Pet finder unless the shelter has had them a few days or someone takes the time to take a picture and post them but the shelters don't post all the dogs they have on Pet finder.

I have been thinking about this girl since you posted her owners came back for her when she was in the shelter. I was afraid it would not be the last time we heard about her. I hope she's found soon, she deserves so much better than what she's received already.

That's so odd...Lily came from there, and her breeder works at Wal-Mart! I'd involve her, but she is not interested in this aspect of Chows, since she signed up as a member here years ago, but never posts.

Sooooo, what happens when she is caught? This is different than Jack and Molly, who had owners who wanted them back.

Will she be caught to be put right back into a shelter? Do they people that were going to take her still want her?

I'm not saying that an effort shouldn't be made to find her, but what do we do with her if/when she is found and caught?

Poor pup. I bet she's scared to death and she doesn't even have an owner out looking for her.

I just got an e-mail from a lady in the area thats going to look for her. I gave her a small background story of the Chow and refered her to this site. She responded from K9 amber alert.

I am in Valpo and live close to Wal-Mart. What is the name of the chow? Will it respond to a name or food? What kind? I am off Wed pm and have will have my dog with me. Does it like other dogs? Does it like to ride in cars?

Let me know and I'll go down there this afternoon and walk the grounds for it.

Her name was simply Shy at the shelter. They believe she is in the wooded area behind Wal-Mart and should be dragging around the leash she was wearing unless it broke off (would be ideal since the leash catching on something could be deadly). I don't know if she would respond to her name or not, but knowing it is a always a plus. She's been on her own for awhile so she must be starving but also even more weary of strangers.

Bless those willing to search for her!!!! It's been so hot and the storms have been heavy. I can only imagine what condition she is in by now.

I should add that I am interested in adopting her!!! She also has rescue willing to take her if I'm unable to get out there.

I really miss my Tara and believe Shy might just be what we need right now.

Oh hurray!

I just hated to see her found and put right back in a shelter. I'm so glad you want to adopt her. She's a gorgeous little thing- she looks like my Tess!

I hope you find her soon.

If she is found and taken to the shelter or the shelter picks her up, Someone needs to get to the shelter before they have time to finish thier cofffee and get her out of there.

Anyone know the shelter in that area so they can keep track, A picture of the Chow needs to be sent to the shelter also so they know to back off.

My mother informed the shelter that if she is turned in by someone that found her or if they pick her up that she wants to be notified. She may have to stay the five holding days but my mom said she will get her out as soon as they release her. If she can be found, she should be safe!

Check the nearby truck stops...a shy chow can cover alot of ground. Plus truck drivers have a tendancy to put food out for strays if they cannot get close enough to them. I see this all the time. I once recued a yellow lab at a truck stop in Utah..If these dogs get desperate and are fed at the truck stops...they tend to stay close because its a food source. A attractive black chow will draw attention. Their are several truck stops in that area or nearby.

luvmydogs, Here are some more people in the aera that want to help. Maybe you can e-mail them and let them know whats going on, I e-mailed them backwith some of the story.

"Ron & Pam Zentz" <rrzentz@verizon.net>

Hi, Jeff.

I live in Valpo, do you? Also, are you the owner of the lost dog?

Porter County Animal Control has a trap that can be borrowed for a deposit. A friend and I used it to trap a lost BC in the dead of winter a couple years ago. It might be the best bet if the dog is staying in one area.

I e-mailed Ron and Pam and gave them my mom's telephone number. She actually met Shy at the shelter back in June and will have more information. She's also willing to help in a more extensive search if a group can be formed. She's gone out there a few times and called for her but never saw any sign of her. I just hope it's not too late.

Are you guys posting flyers around town? Took an add out in the lost and found in your paper? filled a missing dog at the local shelters?

If he isn't being seen anymore it might be time to start posting and checking these sites everyday.

Shy was spotted a couple of times by the Wal-Mart.
If the owner finds her we will never know because all they want to do is get rid of her.
The fliers will be out this weekend.
Denise's mom does some volunteer work at Porter County AC so they know to contact her if a sighting comes in.
She has a collar with a Porter County tag on, if she hasn't lost it.
There was a found dog ad in the paper, Black dog vicinity of 75th & Madison, I called, it is not a Chow.
The area she is in is wooded, some water, not many homes.
For anyone that wants to see the area it is 2400 Morthland Drive, 46383. Type that into Google maps click on Hybrid and zoom in on the area. There is a cemetary to the west, a quary to the SW

Anything going on with this Chow? is she still being spotted? Wal-Mart of all Places. Can't say much for the Chows choice of hide outs but they do have TV.

The update I received today brings some good news as well as bad news. The bad news is that there hasn't been any new calls to the shelter so it's been about three weeks now. Also she is actually a HE!!! This makes things more complicated if he is found since I have three males at home, but I'm sure we can make things work out.

The good news is with the flyers up and the additional pleas for help in searching for him have gotten the attention of a rescue group from IL planning to use scent hounds and search for him this week! It just may be the very best chance of locating him.

Anyway, keep him in your thoughts and prayers that he can be found. This will be a very important search. I don't have much information except they will be looking soon.

Since this boy or girl seems to be hanging around in one place (Walmart), has AC tried setting a live trap? That seems the logical and easiest thing to do at this point.

Nothing, no word at all. There have been no sightings for just about a month now. Fliers went up, but still no calls. With all the very severe storms in that area the past few weeks, it wouldn't be a surpise if he has left the area. My mom wasn't sure if the rescue group had actually gone out there yet or if they were going to wait for another sighting. In either case, there hasn't been a word on his whereabouts.
