Just had similar experience with Butters, his vet said it was seasonal allergies and gave him some meds. We had a lotion for his leg that worked great and he stopped chewing right away, ear drops for his ears, antibiotics and allergy meds. He was a sick puppy, but he is doing very good now.

Sick puppy

Post by pfordeb »

Are chows vulnerable to allergies? Both of ours have them. With the first one we tried predisone but I didn't want to deal with the long term side effects -- she had the ear infection and itchy skin. We also did the ear drops and antibiotics. When we switched to a fish and potato diet, it helped tremendously.

Good luck with yours, keep us posted.

Lots of dogs seem to have allegies these days. Several of ours do. The basset of my son has it the worse. Then Shandi , then the husky Memnok. The shepherd is fine, he doesn't seem to have trouble with it or the pug . The gooby ear , Shandi is on her 2nd type , 3rd week of meds. The shots for allergies are just once a month standard in the summer. Maybe pollution has made things worse for pets as well as folks.

I feed her Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato and for a while that did work... but suddenly each of these little things just creeped up on her! I even had an appointment with the vet and cancelled because I thought her ear was doing better.... Guess I should go in!!

Allergies

Post by pfordeb »

I think you're right about pollution making allergies worse. I never had any, at least not to the point I had to take medication until about 10 years ago. Sullivan's ears definitely get worse in the spring and fall.

What do you all think about steroids, though?? I'm sort of scared by them! My sister was on preznazone for a while and was so, so sick!

Prednisone

Post by pfordeb »

As far as I know, Sullivan never had any ill effects from Prednisone, though after her first couple bouts of allergies when she was young, I decided to change foods, add an omega-3 supplement and do drops in her ears when they flared up. Oh, I also changed flea and tick medicine. I was a little wary of prednisone too and I sort of remember that she had to be monitored for something if she took it long term (that's real detailed, haha). Anyway, I'd ask the vet what are the effects. Prednisone did clear up the allergies quickly. Good luck.

Thanks PFor... I hate the thought of putting medicine in my baby! She can't tell me if it hurts, but I hate the fact that she's suffering and there's not much else I can do to help!

Allergies

Post by pfordeb »

It is frustrating. Just try different things and see what your vet says -- if you don't like what she/he says -- find another one, just ask around your area. Debbie (the deb in pfordeb)

We just had to start a new ear flush on Shandi for a yeast infection so I totally understand. It makes you feel so bad for them and I know it bothers her to have that stuff put in. One of the few times she doesn't want to come to me. She drags herself " Like oh do we have to " .
Our beloved chow mix we lost to cancer had to be on prednisone. According to our vet you have to be careful about them feeling indestructible kinda. Not paying enough attention to something that does hurt. He had to have tests all the time so I don't know which ones involved the drugs. We get vetalog shots for the allergies. A couple of our dogs are on those and benedryl. I also use omega 3's , the Missing Link type and Innova Evo food. Let us know how the vet visit goes.

Poor Angel...Tess has had a few prednisone shots in her life, usually only with severe allergy issues. She hasn't had any problems lately, mostly because of a food change. They are a steroid though, and steroids are never the best thing, but they do work if the allergies get too bad. My family has a cat who is almost 16 who has had prednisone shots a large part of her life. I hate her having to get them, but about every 8-10 weeks or so, she starts ripping out all of her hair, gets a scabby, sneezing, coughing, etc. We have tried everything else with no answers so we get her the prednisone shot because she's suffering.

Well, we just got two days full of rain and Angel's allergies seem to have settled a bit.... her legs are not sore anymore and her ears look to have settled.... I didn't call the vet yet. When it flares up again I will inquire about the shots/food changes.

Thanks everyone!!

Oh, the poor thing. I know our first chow, Chia, had hot spots and was on prednisone a couple of times. As for the ear problems, the first time she had an infection, our vet said that she had a yeast infection. (OK, I've heard of those before, I thought...) In her ear. WHERE????? So, later, I told her, "Honey, when someone says stick it in your ear, they don't really mean it..."

Tempest had some hot spots beginning, kept scratching to the point it was driving us crazy, and the vet put her on antibiotics and after a couple of weeks, the scratching stopped. Thank heavens...

She doesn't seem very itchy... She is chewing her paws often, though. Her ear really looks so much better. I guess it's running its course.

Thanks again everyone!

PLEASE READ THIS....

Some of the symptoms may be allergies but don't be too quick to write everything off to them. You describe several problems.

The ear goo is probably an infection and needs antibiotics and topical drops along with a non-alcoholic rinse.

Eyes and skin issues ARE probably seasonal related, a good dog specific oatmeal shampoo will help, they also make sprays for the "hot-spots" because they won't heal until he/she stops messin' with them.

Bad breath is a sign of bacteria, see a vet before it becomes a big problem. These can become systemic infections quickly and also, if the problem is with the lower front teeth, if they become so bad they have to be removed, the dog may have serious eating problems in the future because those teeth are such a massive part of the canines lower jaw.

Good lord, I hope I don't sound like a "know-it-all" and God forbid I give you any wrong advice.....I've had dogs for 43+ years and I've been to the vet once or twice. PLEASE CONTACT A VET. It sucks to be uncomfortable and in pain.

Just saw this thread...if the ears have a smell, it's an ear infection. Mr. N had that and his sister, Shiloh, kept trying to lick his ears...he had to have his ears flushed and put on antibiotics.
