who says golden retrievers are friendly, one tried to attack

Post by chow0 »

my pup!

i just took my boy to the dog park for some exercise and as soon as i let him off the leash this 120lb golden retriever tried to attack him, then chased him, nocked him down and was trying to bite him :( i screemed i'll kick your f-in dog in the head  i reared back and let my foot fly, lucky for them i didn't get their dog square in the kisser  it probably would have done some damage because i really let one FLY!

wow i'm still upset

anyway i put my pup back on his leash and took him to the people part of the park, sat him down rubbed his bully and told him to calm down for about 3-4 minutes (he seemed fine) then i checked him for any bites  , luckally there are none :D

in the mean time they took their dog and left. one of the other pet owners there has none my boy since he was 3 months and told the other pet owner that their dog attacked mine! they told him that their golden has been in 3 other fight and got beat up pretty bad once, DA THEIR DOGS MEAN AND SHOULDN'T BE IN DOG PARKS OFF THE LEASH!!!!!!!!

anyway after they left i took my pup back in there and he played friendly just like always.

he's getting lots of turkey tonight for not being freaked out by that pos other dog <img src="http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d108/ ... C00396.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com">

Oh! My Goodness!

Well done! And look - just take a deep breath and get un-upset. You did right! It doesn't matter a bit what you did to the other dog - I might have been tempted to rip its throat out

Seriously - you have every right to protect your chowling - if you don't who will? :)

Poor chowling but fortunately you were there.

I my goodness - I am sitting here fuming!

I had better take my own advice and take a deep breath.

Give chowling a hug from me and purple kisses from Milly and Mabel. :) :)

I know I'd be pretty upset if another dog came after my Koda. Then they give CHOWS a bad reputation???? If people know their dog has a problem, then they need to keep him on a leash so as not to hurt another dog or a person. Chows have gotten a bad reputation through the years. Yes, they are quite different from other dogs. Yes, they have a mind of their own. Yes, they can become aggressive if not trained not to be aggressive. But so can any other dog. I have always told people... they are absolutely no bad or mean dogs. It's bad and mean owners that make a bad or mean dogs. And what you went through just proves my point. When my Sasha was a baby, I'd take a Cheerio (the breakfast cereal), put it on my bottom lip and have her take it from my lip gently. It took a few tries. but she very quickly learned that if she wasn't gentle, she didn't get the Cheerio. After she learned to be gentle with me, I had the kids do the same thing. And all of her life, when Sasha was handed something to eat or given a treat by anyone, she took it gently. And hopefully I will be able to teach Koda the same thing. He is a little more hyper than Sasha ever was. I wonder if that is common in male chows? But I said all of that, to say this... LOL If chows can be taught to be gentle and not attack other dogs or people, so can any other dog. That dog's owner(s) should have been kicked. OK I said my peace for all it's worth. LOL
I was going to attach a picture of Koda, but can't figure out how to do it. Can anyone give me some help? LOL
Hugs,
Nancy and Tai

Yep - who wudda thunk that a golden retriever would behave badly?? Doesn't that just give some credence to how a dog behaves depending on the owner - no matter what the breed?
Even so...I still keep in mind that the Chow Chow has a different smell that other animals pick up and don't react to favorably. I like the Chow smell but many other animals don't and they behave badly which will put our Chowlings and Chows at odds so we need to be careful and mindful of other dogs' reactions.
My Mr. N is a full Chow Chow and is so gentle when taking food from our hands. He's so gentle sometimes that the food drops to the floor before he gets it. Most of the time he holds his mouth open so that the food falls onto his tongue and then he turns and after he has eaten the morsel, he comes back with mouth open just enough to catch the next piece.

Grr.. Stupid Golden retriver, stupid owners.
I hate when that happens.
I'm glad your boy is okey.
I know how you feel, Diego was attacked by a Flat coated Retriver once, only he got pretty messed up. Had to go to the vet and everything.

*Breath* Have to calm myself down now.
Why is it always breeds that isn't a part of the dangerous list that attacks?
(Not that Chows are a part of the dangerous list in Norway)
Diego was attacked by an Collie the other day.
Luckely the owner had some controll over it and when he called at it, the dog went.

There was once a BIG napoleon mastiff who just hated Chows,
(Diego was 3 month then) and luckely the owner had the dog leashed, if not Diego would be history, The dog just snapped. The owner had big trouble holding her dog.

But i'm so glad everything is ok with your boy. :)

1 person said i shouldn't of kicked the other dog i should grab it by the hind legs an pull it off my boy, HA forget that i'm not gonna get bit by a dog that attacks mine. although i still have mixed feelings about the kick i can tell you it got RESULTS they saw i meant BUSINESS and got it off my boy pronto! not to mention i think the other dog pooped it's fur.

thanks again.

It doesn't matter what breed the dog is. The temperment of the dog and how it was raised will determine how it acts.

My Chow is very good natured but quick to defend himself when attacked. I took him to my parents at the beginning of the summer to cut some of his hair off as well as 2 of their dogs. The 2 female mutts were at the house when I got there and they checked him out, even growling at him a few times. He stood there happy as could be. The male mutt came home while we were cutting one of the females hair and attacked Bear while he was tied to a tree with his leash. No injuries but if I hadn't seperated them, Bear would have torn my parents dog up pretty good even being half the size. He even likes cats. The possum I found in the backyard was probably a different story though...

You are right though. If you know your dog attacks, keep him on a leash or away from others.

I use to take Pekoe to the dog park all the time but I still consider them a dangerous place for a Chow, the only reason I took Pekoe is I knew she could hold her own and most dogs won't come near her but she has been attacked twice both times at the dog park and both times by German Shepard's, now that she is getting older I notice when on walks and at the dog park more dogs are growling at her and wanting to attack her so the dog park trips will end, not that she cares I don't think Pekoe ever really liked them anyway. You people with Chow puppies in my opinion are really taking a big chance by taking them to dog parks, I know your trying to socialize them but I don't think the dog park is the right place for it.

I do agree with Karen there is something about a Chow, smell, attitude, in Pekoes case possessed that other dogs pick up on and do not like, what ever it is it will set off even the most gentle dogs such as a Golden retriever.

Yes I agree with you.

When we were researching the breed before we decided on a Chow, the breeders we spoke to here on The Island told us that Chows smell different, not the normal dog smell and of course once we saw the chows and got Milly we realised what they were saying.

The breeders told us that other dogs do not like the smell and at best ignore Chows and at worst attack them.

When we take Milly and Mabel out we find that this is what happens. Some dogs just do not seem to recognise M & M as dogs (which of course they are not! :D ) but other react really nastily.

Milly and Mabel are getting quite grown up about it now though! :D If the other dog doesn't recognise them they just walk on with the snotty totty little noses in the air but if the other dog dares to growl or whatever, their language is dreadful!

Whatever it is they say sees most other dogs off! 8)

Living in New York City, I would guess Chow0 doesn't have alot of options for his chowlings. I'm lucky to live in a small community, and can take my chowling up the road a mile away to my parents home where there's acres and acres of land to play on. Even our yard is over an acre. I suspect Chow0 walks out the door and hits sidewalk. I think he is doing great with his city chow, but just like with people, NYC has all manners of dogs... best to keep some hard sole shoes on, or carry a good walking stick!

you are 100% correct auddymay.

taking my pup to the dog park has nothing to do with socialization because he gets that as soon as we leave the building. i take him there to teach him to come to me when called off his leash and for exercise and not very often. he got away from me once and i was chasing him down 1st avenue calling him and checking the street light on the next block thinking please don't turn green, please don't turn green, when a women sitting on a bench eating an ice cream stood up and raised her arms, it stopped him and changed his direction and i tackled him :D

that's when i decided to take to the dog park and teach him to come to me when called off his leash with other dogs around to distract him.

to me it was worth the risk/reward.

he comes when called :D

That is excellent that he comes when called - more than the naughtiest girls in the world do!

Fred always carries a walking stick and tells people with dogs running off the leash who try to attack M & M that he will batter their dog - and he would!

I'm so jealous! Lily will come when called- if she feels like it! Right after I got her a new collar (nylon) the damn thing came off. I looked out- no Lily. Pip was sitting there... I called, and from 3 yards away she came running full tilt. As she got close, I could almost hear the gears turning- she was free! She turned and ran to the back of our yard, and out. I ran and got clicker, treats and a lead, and went after her. She was waiting in the back yard that touches our back yard. I called and clicked, and I could swear I heard her laugh at me as she trotted to the next yard... this went on for 4 more yards, at one point she was walking on the road, which was empty of any traffic (a cul de sac). Finally she erred and went into a blocked off yard. Once cornered, the little bitch gave up. I was so ticked off! She was the perfect angel all the way home, where she got to sit and watch Pip get every last treat in my pocket. First thaw, we are installing invisible fencing!
