I took her to Petsmart...

Post by furballchowbaby »

She did really great, but all the dogs in there kept barking at her! There Maggie was walking along smelling the cookies and bones, minding her own business and these little dogs kept yapping at her. This little Jack Russell scared her to death, she was hiding behind me!! At least 4 people stopped to pet her remarking how soft and pretty she is... she was a perfect angel, too! She just sat down and licked their hand! One lady remarked how she has not seen a Chow in such a long time... I thought that was odd.

She did better in the car... only threw up a little liquid when we got home, but she was a real spaz during the trip! I'm really hoping these smaller trips will help her get over the carsick thing!

BTW... Roxie is outside pouting that she didn't get to go this time. She is refusing to come inside...argh!

Aw!!! Good girl!! Yeah, some of those other dogs have no manners I tell you. :D That's okay because everyone will just keep ooohing and aaahing over sweet Maggie.

I wish I had some advice to offer on the carsickness. :(

YAY Maggie! She sounds like a great girlie! Give her a purple kiss from Rogan.

I hate those little yappy things that go uncontrolled by their owners. They are nervous breeds to begin with (I'd be nervous too, if I were 2 lbs.) and their owners do nothing to help because they are so small 'they can't be harmful'! PS - I've only ever been bitten by small nasty things (poodle and chi's); both very not used to humans other than their owners and both in their own homes.

And yes, the car sickness can typically be tied to anxiety. In theory, the more often you take these short trips to fun places, the less it will occur because she will not be nervous. We take our two on family vacations. That could mean up to 5-7 hours in the car at a clip. They chill in the back seat (in their beds) and just enjoy the road. Rogan loves looking out the window, and Nina sleeps. We've done it for years and it's a blast!

Good job on your excursion to the Petsmart. We have a special name for those yappy, foofoo shishi types- we call them 'footballs'.

Since Michele just mentioned that the car sickness could be tied to anxiety, I do have a suggestion. :D I read that having the scent of lavendar in the car (through an air freshener or something), has calming effects on dogs. So that might be worth a try, I want to try it too but haven't found anything just lavendar scented.

Ooooh lavender??? Why that's what I use to set the mood for...well you know?
Hasn't worked so far, my hubby has allergies! arrgh!

Do you guys watch Oprah? The aromatherapy expert (I didn't know there was such a thing) was on her show and told all the romantics out there, that lavender makes one, well how do I say it...hyper-hormonal?
So, I don't know what emotion lavendar will evoke in the furkids, but it might be interesting to find out??

I never understood why people with little dogs don't just train them to behave in public....? Do you think it's really because they think they are harmless? It drives me nuts... Just because your dog is LITTLE shouldn't mean that he or she shouldn't have to be a leash! Or that they should run over to my dog and start yipping. UGH.

Angel hates little dogs. She runs away from them! She likes big dogs.... She smells them and will sometimes play with them (she is extremely aloof and prefers the company of myself or boyfriend) but ALWAYS jumps away from little dogs... .then they smell her belly area and yip, yip, yip until mommy or daddy comes to pick them up. Just put them on a leash!!!

Okay. Enough venting.

I have a couple of adorable, "footballs"!
But, my footballs are very well behaved.

I get ill with the PEOPLE who don't train their little ones. There are a couple of snippy pekinese around here that always run out of their yard toward Colonel while we are walking down the street.
One has bitten Colonel, twice! The second time that happened, I called out to the owner, "please get your little dogs off the street, we have a leash law"!
The owner, sitting on her porch, continued to sit on her big butt and yelled at the pekinese, who paid no attention to her.
I said, "it won't be pretty if I let my dog loose on the street with yours, so please take better care of your pets for everyone's sake"!
So far, nothing has changed...they are still running loose.

That's interesting, Bama, because the dog we have a problem with is a pekinese, too. The lady just opens her door and he runs outside.... She has no yard and hardly even a sidewalk. Everytime she said "Oh! We're in such a hurry! I just wanted to let him run for a minute!" Then he follows Angel and nips at her legs. I used to try to help her get him back in the house. Now I just keep walking. If he follows me all the way home she'll have to take her big butt there, too. It's so ignorant. What if Angel bit back? Then she'd have to get put down and it wouldn't even be her fault! STUPID. Just follow the leash law....

Thats awsome...

When I brought Steel home as a puppy... when I took him for his first vet visit... they even said they rarely see chows. Except for mine. :-)

We call those little yippy dogs "bedroom slippers."

My dad (who has Orso) calls little dogs "microwaveable."

So weird, we're all miles and miles apart and yet have the same problem. I take the end of my chow's leash and pretend to be whipping the little yappy thingys.

Annoying too when I ride my bike, they like to nip ya in the heel,

I suppose a lot of people who have small dogs don't bother training them because they think they need it.The only time my son ever got bit by a dog was when my mother in laws Yorkshire Terrier, who had already bitten 4 of her grandchildren, decided it was tike to find out what Dion's cheek tasted like.
Did the dog get punished?Nah,she picked him up,which he loved,so he certainly didn't stop biting .
I often see people pick small dogs up when a large dog approaches,it's no miracle the little rats think they're superiour, they're much bigger than the big dogs that way!!!
When I got a maltese,I took it to puppy training. He was the smallest dog there, and we sure got some laughs. We also scored the best grades, that's when we laughed.
We have two poodles ,the smallest one is only 7 lbs and ten inches at the shoulder. When we take her places we always get a lot of attention, and she loves it.She doesn't bark, she doesn't bite, she just wants to be petted by everybody and lick them to death. The larger poodle,12 lbs,is a bi more shy,but loves people as well, loves other dogs, except when they get to close to our fence (if they do they're trespassing, the fenced area is in the wooded area behind our house and at least 50 ft away from every border.)
Anybody that lets their little "rats" run loose should get fined. If one gets eaten by a big dog, that's life, could have been hit by a car or picked up by a bird of prey as well(you bet the hawks here look funny at my toy, lol)

Ivana gets along with all the dogs, but she will not tolerate any of people touching her. I have to constantly tell then not to pet her. Re-socializing her is taking a long time, but I don't want to press her. Besides she gets along with the dogs which means the most to me.

So my dog is not perfectly friendly, but she never trys to hurt the other dogs or is mean to people. She just lets them know she does not trust them.

Personally I think there's nothing wrong with a dog not wanting to be touched by everybody. As long as they don't try and take a bite out of anyone walking past.Strangers that try and touch me without my permission can count on being bit ,or worse,as well.

I had the same problem when I lived in Wyoming. The little yappers would be running loose, all day and night. Would come up and yap yap and nip nip, from several blocks away they'd be running.

Jazzy broke her collar and got loose one time, and I get a dog at large ticket! Oooo, I was pi$$ed off! The cop even brought me the broken collar, and told me to keep her tied when outside I asked what about all the other dogs running loose, and his answer, what dogs. I don't see any other dogs loose but yours. grrr!

As for the car sickness, Jazz used to always get car sick, but grew out of it. I started leaving the window open a crack, even when freezing outside. Eventually she stopped the throwing up and settled in to loving the 4 hr drive we did a couple times a month.

All I know about lavender is it horribly messes with my allergies. Thats ok, though, I have no use for its, well, other properties as I live alone
