Bathing
Chows are a *Different * breed , there are many things to learn . Socilazation is an Imperative here is a place to read
http://www.allbreed.net/chows/Train/socializ.htm
as regards bathing
""Bathing should be done monthly and can be done oftener if you prefer. Bathing as often as once a week will not dry out the coat if you're using good products and doing the job properly. Most show Chows are bathed weekly. ""

Welcome to the world of Chow. As Babu says, the Emperor of Dogs.
Chows are not like other dogs. By now you will know they do not smell like other dogs and also, they have two more teeth than other dogs.
They are very clever.
They are very loyal and love their owners.
As Babu has said, bathing and combing is important. We live in the U.K. and have two Chow Chows and we bath them at least two or three times a year, but really when necessary. If they have got dirty, they are bathed or if we have had a very hot spell, a bath is very welcome. Our Chows do not like being bathed very much but afterwards when they have been rubbed down with a towel, they are very happy and smile and strut around because they know how beautiful they look. We try to comb them every day - just ten minutes or so a day keeps them looking nice and combs out any loose coat and makes them feel nice. We do not always manage every day but at least five times a week.
They like a nice walk but they do not need miles and miles of walks. We never let our Milly and Mabel off the lead because they are naughty and would not come back when we call. A lot of other Chow owners have this same idea. You will know your Chow!
I am sure others on this site will give you lots of advice and help. We have had Milly and Mabel for only four and a half years - others have kept chows for much longer than we have.
Lovely to hear from you and keep in touch.

One more thing you can add to the one and only world of Chows is, I'm not sure if this is true and I only have Pekoe to base it on but someone once told me Chows are the only breed then can move their ears independantly. they can move one ear one way and move the other ear in a different direction. I have watched Pekoe and she does this all the time when you talk to her. mmmm maybe if they move their ears fast enough they can fly, have to check with pekoe on that.

Hi German and Welcome,
I will agree with Jeff's comment about the ears. I also think chows are the only ones able to do that. All dogs do 'triangular' listening, but it's almost comical to watch chow ears when they are in the middle of a surround of sounds
Take care,
Cindy & Kodi

Welcome, German!
Just wanted to pass this link on training and working with Chows that Jeff (& Pekoe) shared with us on the old site. Since you are new with chows, it might be useful for you.
