Potential Chow owner with young kids

Hi,
I have been planning to get a Chow puppy in the next couple of months. We are a family of 5 with 3 children with ages ranging from 3 to 8. I'm experienced with dogs (Keeshonds). I've done plenty of research about the breed and feel the Chow will fit nicely into our family. However we were talking to a vet nurse and she said we would have to be crazy to get a Chow. She says they are naturally dangerous and would need muzzling round our children. She also said that socialisation will make no difference. I'm pretty sceptical about what she has to say, however the implications if she is actually right are not ideal. A few more facts are that we have plenty of space, the dog will live indoors with us, and I fully intend to socialise and train the dog. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would love to hear them.
Thanks.
