Chows and children

Hi, I would like some advice. We are looking to get a Chow. We're a family of 5 with 3 children ranging from 3 to 8 years old. We're a busy bunch but I think a dog will be a great addition to our lives. I'm experienced with dogs (Keeshonds).
My question is, are Chows and kids compatible? I have done lots of reading and thought yes, but we just spoke to a vet tech and she said we would be crazy to get a Chow. She said socialisation won't make a difference because of the dog's natural temperament. I am sceptical about what she said but she has spooked me and I don't want to put my kids at risk. I plan to work hard on the socialisation, training etc. Would love to know people's thoughts.

Thanks

They are around here, but they have been socialized with neighbourhood children since arriving. I have had Chow's my entire life, starting when I was about 10. Our current big male didn't care for kids when he was young and would walk away or inform them to piss off. Issues usually ended there. At about 8 yrs (11.5 now) he didn't care too much anymore and has allowed quite a few kids over the years to be his buddy and even defended them from school bus bullies. Our young girl 6 doesn't like little ones in snow suits, creep her the hell out. That said, lots of kids play with her up and down the eastern seaboard every year. Our newest 19 weeks, loves kids, I think she sees them as a variation of the turkey. Saving them for later snacks. :)
