Digging question

Post by ski »

We have had many rescue dogs over the years. Most recently we have had chows. We have recently adopted a four year old male named Sargeant. He is a great dog... , he loves to be in our company, is great with other dogs and our grandkids. Our only problem....he digs!!! We have never had a dog who digs. Every so often he will go crazy digging and there is no stopping him. It is almost like he has "zoned out" and gets crazy. We need to put a leash on him to pull him away from the dirt . He is so strong and it takes a lot of effort. Is there anything we can do to control this?

Hi ski,
I've only had one Chow that dug a little bit when young but that was only when it was very hot and he just removed the top soil to get a cool spot to lay. He grew out of that at about 6 or 7 months old. My dogs have always had their own Sandbox to lay in to stay cool. And no, I don't have any kids but the dogs love the sand just as much as children. They do dig in it, once again just to get down to the cool stuff and they quickly learn, almost naturally that this is the place were they can do that without getting into trouble. It might pay to make that "special spot" for your dog and then encourage him to use it, fingers crossed, it might help.

Good Luck

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually have a box for my grandson which has no sand but I am thinking I might fill it and see if that works. Sarge is such a great dog...want to do whatever I can for him
