Hello everyone,

I have a 6 month old cream chow chow named Benji. He is the sweetest and behaves very well. Like all chows he does get a little cautious with strangers. We are debating on if we want to neuter him. He seems to be so good. However we know it might be better in the long run. If anyone has any stories or experience with either neuter or not please share! My fiance and me are debating and anything will help. THANK YOU

Neuter yes, but there is some thought out there that waiting until they are a year old is best. Hormones, growth plate stuff. I'm not sure if it's true or not but when I was researching years ago it made sense to me. We didn't make it quite to a full year though because my female went into heat at 5 mos. and I didn't want to deal with the risk. Shuggy's personality did not change at all! He was the same lovable goofball he had always been.

Wait until after a year until there growth plates fuse...if you fix them early those plates never fuse together there for they are more prone to Arthritis ...possible hip dysplasia...just a thought.

Chestnut has had 2 heat cycles by the time she was 10 months old. We had her neutered then. Our vet wanted to do it earlier 5 months but we went for a second opinion. We were told not earlier than 8 months. Then we find out later on for chows we should have waited till 16 months for growth plate reasons and to lessen likelihood for bone cancer. Well at 3.5 years old she was limping. Early onset arthritis due to growth plates not closing fully when we neutered. She was also now taller and way heavier than her intact sisters, mom and dad. I would wait for the prescribed year. What to expect after spay/ neuter? The fur will grow even thicker!

Thank you for the replies! Yes one of the reasons for waiting is for my pup to fully develop it's bones. From what you guys said that should be reasons enough to wait. We also, been possibly wanting to breed him as well, because we love his personality and his nature. Would it be okay to allow him to breed once or twice and then have him neutered?

I hope Chestnut is not going through too much pain!

Awww thank you BenjiChow. Luckily, glucosamine chondroitin was all she needed to stop the limping and Morning stiffness. She walks normally now after 20 days of taking the supplement.

agree with all above who recommend neutering. I believe it's best for their health and temperment.
Due to some health issues my boy has, I think my adopted chow chow was neutered too young but everything I've heard and read recommends neutering.
