Kidney disease

My dog has been acting weird lately, so I decided to take him to the vet. Turns out he has kidney disease, and the doctor said that eventually it'll catch up to him and it'll be really difficult for him at the end. She also said that this is hereditary for chows...
I guess he should not be eating eating a lot of protein anymore. I cut out all the meat out of his diet, and a lot of proteins. I also ordered kidney disease food for him.

I was wondering if any of you had to deal with this and how did you feed your dog? I would love to try some new recipes for him. Also, how do I flush out/detox all the extra proteins from his body fast?
I want to be as careful as possible with him. He's my best friend and I just want him to live a full life..

Our Loki has liver disease but he, also, needs to have as little protein as possible due to his condition. I avoid beef or red meat. I make him braised chicken with rice and vegetables. I also give him dry food and check the protein content very carefully. Most dry foods emphasize protein but I look for the least percentage. He is on supplements which help. He has always been a fussy eater but he does like the foods I prepare for him. I braise the chicken in unsalted chicken stock and add sweet potatos or carrots and white rice. Good luck!

What's the protein percentage in the food you give him? I just ordered 12 percent. Is that low enough?

Yes...that is relatively low. Under 20 percent is good.

Loki is almost 12 and has many health issues..severe arthritis, thyroid issues, liver disease, etc. it has been several years that I have had him on a low protein diet and he is doing quite well.
Good luck!

We lost our last Chow to kidney failure at 12 years. We tuned her up when she got sick and had a wonderful final three months with her! We miss her horrible, but she was a gift that lasted 12 years!
