sleeps with eyes open
My boy always sleeps with his eyes open. Kind of creepy but true. Does anyone else's chow do that?
Re: sleeps with eyes open
Dear Loha's Dad,
I hope that you will speak to your vet about dog sleeping with its eyes open.
I registered today because I love chows and plan to have one as soon as I have a proper environment for chow comfort. (2nd story condo with stairs right now!) I love this forum and have read it for years now.
What I DO have is a pekingese...alright, his coat is sculpted to look chow-like...I can't help it... but having a peke, I can tell you that every time we visit the vet, I am grilled as to whether he sleeps with his eyes open. You can easily imagine what a problem this is with pekes, who have been over-bred for facial structure.
Apparently, when a dog sleeps with its eyes open, the eye tissue dries out, making it very vulnerable to bacterial attack. This can lead to chronic issues which may culminate with the need to remove the eye, in a worst case scenario. The treatment is very simple; they provide eyedrops for nightly use.
I don't know if this is an problem with chows, but I would make a point of checking with the vet. If you do, please let me know what they tell you.
Best regards!
