My chows weight!?

Post by scottystacker »

Hey my female puppy is ~9 weeks and the vet weighed her at 6.4 lbs or around 2.9 kg. Is this really small for a chow? I was told the mother was pretty small but the dad was 60ish lbs. Should I be expecting a growth spurt soon?

I can only go by my puppy's weight which was almost 12lbs at 8 weeks.

But, I do know there are many variables such as the size of the parents, the number of puppies in a litter, and the particular lines.

If the litter was large the puppies are often a bit smaller as they had to compete for the nutrition while in the womb. They also had to compete for the mother's milk. A litter with only one or two puppies often has larger puppies.

Some lines mature at different times, having growth spurts at various times in their young lives...

... and of course the size of the parents plays a major role...

All of this aside, the size of your puppy (she is gorgeous, by the way) is never as important as her health. Make certain that she receives a clean bill of health from the vet and feed her the very best food that your budget can afford.

I got out my records for my female Peekaboo. When she was 7 weeks old she weighed 4.8 lbs.. She grew up to weigh about 46 lbs. She was an athletic Chow that could keep up with horses in the mountains all day long. Most important is that your girl is healthy. Female Chows can vary greatly in size. I wouldn't worry as long as she seems healthy and is eating with a good appetite.
She sure is a cute puppy!
