Changes in a stud

Post by Mokoto »

Hi Chows and Chowettes,

Just a quick question i've not managed to find much information on.

i've been told with most dogs used for studding, that once they have mated for the first time you will notice a change in attitude in them towards other dogs whom they will then see as a threat to their mating. My question is this:
Does this ring true for the Chow Chow?

While i am expecting a torrent of answers telling me not to breed & to adopt instead, please note that i am not planning to stud, my query is purely informational based on the fact that Chow Chow's can be very different from normal dogs in a variety of ways, is this one of them? A friend asked this question, it got me thinking

Many Thanks for your time peeps!

From what I understand from knowing quite a lot of breeders is that it varies from dog to dog and their temperament but that it can change a chow. I know two dogs who have become very difficult in the show ring. Snapping and even growling where they were happy with other dogs before being used at stud but I also know some who have been used at stud who are gentle boys. :)

Hi Sirchow,

Thanks for the reply. At least i know now if anyone asks me again.

On a side note, does anyone else gets approached by randoms when your walking your chow being asked if they can cross breed with your Chow?

I had one fool ask if i would stud Mo to mate with his Jug, "imagine that it'd be amazing, we could call it a Juw Juw" - he said.
"Not Really, it wouldn't be a Chow" I replied :)

Ahhhh Thanks SirC,

Unfortunately was due a really good groom so may look a little scruffy. My grooming skills aren't all that i'm afraid. Neck and Ruff i struggle with the most really.

Guess i need more practice
