I have been thinking about getting another chow. I always have one problem. I can't decide to get a male or a female. :) I think I want to ask you guys because those of you who have had the awesome chance to own both boy or girl which did you like best and why? I personally have had both and still cant decide I have always connected better with a girl mostly because I am one. This is my one top question I have had two chows in the past both have passed on to the big dog park in the sky. They were great I love the breed and always want another. But back to the question give me your answers hopefully it will help me decide!

100% agree with Kitten, get both. They're so different and it is so much fun to watch them to interact. if you can, get both.

We have just had girly chows and they have and are absolutely gorgeous. :D
However, I would love to have had a boy chow. I have read on this site about the boy chows and their personalities and antics.
I realise this is no help to you! Just me pondering with you. \:D/

Kimba was Joe's chow when we started dating and then got married. It took about two years for her to merely "accept" me but it was so worth it. She was so delightful. We would have many an hour-long conversation with one another while I did dishes at 1:00am before my husband got home from work. When she passed, we decided we wanted boys and two at the same time. We got brothers from the same litter and they couldn't be more different!! But they are both VERY loving, VERY sociable (Leo has mellowed quite a bit in the last couple months). Leo has chosen Joe and Max has chosen me. When I am home alone, I'm surrounded by the two and the same goes with Joe. But, when we're both home, Leo seems to be Joe's shadow while Max is generally mine. They take VERY good care of us both (staying close, keeping watch). Now, George has Ursa and Malachi ... they are two quite different chows, too. Would love to hear him chime in here for you, too.

I've had five males and loved all my "buddys" as I have nicknamed them. My girl though is a complete nut! She is so busy, so attentive to me, (and everything else) such a complete joy to have. I truly think that my next one will be another female. This is especially true now that I'm a bit older and the females are smaller and a little easier to handle in general.

The one consideration I would think about though has to do with spaying versus neutering, spayins is more expensive than neutering and it is more imperative to get it done so that your girl doesn't get an infection or you don't end up with every intact male from miles around trying to get into your yard. Just something to be aware of.

I've loved my males and females (1 purebred female & 1 purebred male/1 mix female & 1 mix male) but honestly, I prefer females. I just click better with females (though I do love my boys), I've had a stronger bond with Tippsy and Dixie than I did with Cinder and Jasper. Plus, I've found that my females have been cleaner than my males... The boys tend to pee on their own front legs and I have to clean them up before they come in.... #-o

But I also agree with Victory on the spay/neuter thing.

Good Morning, What a difficult decision you have :) We have had the pleasure of both and with that we have found great joy. Our gentlemen have been very noble and loving with personalities all their own. Now, Ms Bella, she is truly a lady no doubt about that. The distinctions we have observed are... Bella can be a little more prissy, needy, demanding, moody, over the top affectionate, loves being pampered, demands your presence and all in a somewhat comedic demur. This is not unlike the gentlemen to some extent, and possibly just her wonderful personality. We feel she carries an air about her that you could not ignore as being an elegant lady. All our Chowdren and our neighbors (we have 2 in a half mile that have Chowdren, How lucky are we built in play dates!) carry very similar traits and different personalities, all have come from different show breeders. One neighbor has two males and the other a male and female as we do. I can say Ms Rosey and their past female Ms Annie have all been a little more dramatic then their males and this is what we have noticed withMs Bella. All are wonderful and I could go on forever about the 30 years of our Chow family. What I do know is... that if you invest your time and love just as any child you will not be disappointed :D Good Luck can not wait to hear about your new addition!

I think a lot depends on individual personality. Why dont you rescue a chow and just see which one you fall n love with/needs you most?
My girl is much quieter and less playful than my boy. She is a true lady and very affectionnate. My boy is a handful but more obedient overall and makes me laugh every day.
I suppose that a girl is a bit easier to handle, as they dont get as big. Really - there isn't much in it, all chows are fabulous in their own little way.

I have two. One male and one female. I had the male first but, the breeder recommended a female for the second Chow because "males are territorial". I think it was a mistake. The female wants to be the matriarch all the time and will attack him for no reason. On the other hand, I watched a video of two male Chows playing together as pals. They seemed to have no qualms about both being males.
Females have a lot of drama.

I got Ursa first. She is female (duh), and had not been socialized. After I had her about a year, I saw Malachi at the animal shelter. He is a teddy bear, and the girls at the shelter just loved him, so he was well socialized at three months. They made a good pair, with Malachi helping to bring our Ursa from her shell. Ursa is very dominating. I think this is a female thing, because there is Cleo, a Yorkie and Maggie, a rat terrier, and they all will push Malachi around. This summer we added Bit, a "chow" wa wa mix. The two boys play together, it is so funny to see Bit chase Malachi around the yard with chew toy. The females tend to each want to be the queen bee, but Ursa is definitely the alpha.

Ohhhh ... I just love Ursa, George. She makes my chow-terus hurt!!! I have NO idea how a girlie-girl would do with our two rough-and-tumble boys but Joe and I always sigh when we think about not getting their sister, Beatrice, when we had the chance. I think someday we'll add a third chowgirl ... but for now we'll just have to dream.

Ursa is something else. The weather has cooled off with a front that came through, and she is enjoying it. She can be pretty rough and tumble if she wants to. She has worked a number on the corrugated pipe, and her new favorite thing is the sidewall from a tire, which I had cut to go at the base of the fig tree to keep grass down. Kitty pulled it from around the tree and now Ursa is carrying it around the yard. And of course, she can be rough on the other dogs. Malachi is her match, but that is it. Poor Bit gets tormented. She will thump him with her nose and almost knock him over. He will come back yipping and she will do it to him again. Yesterday she got his chew toy and was shaking it around. Malachi then got in on that act, and I had to rescue the toy.

I have three girl chows and a boy cavalier. Funny I just cant imagine having a boy chow. My daughter has one of my boy pups and he is great till he rolls over to get a tummy rub and then I'm like whoa whats all that! I like my tidy girls lol. They all get on great and although we have a few hormones it is fairly easy to sort out the problems when one is on heat. I would say dont have two girls as they will come on heat together and unless you are very tuned into their body language and trigger points there could be trouble. The whole when to spey and coming on heat thing is a bit more of a consideration than for a boy. But realy they are all great. I would just go with one of each with a bit of time inbetween to let one puppy grow up a bit. Perhaps girl first cos she is always going to be the boss anyway and add boy puppy a year later....sorted :D
