Adopting a rescue

Does anyone have a link or other general information on what to expect when adopting a rescue? I'm part of a local rescue organization that can use a lot of help with making successful adoptions for dogs and cats. We had a recent sour adoption which I attribute to lack of information and expectation of the adopter. I want to make sure potential adopters are aware that rescues need special attention. It would be helpful if there is an existing link that can be shared.

I was just reading the June-Aug 2011 issue of Bark Magazine and there's a great article from Patricia McConnell, PhD called "Welcome, helping a recently adopted adult dog adjust to new surroundings". Unfortunately, I could find a link on their site - thebark.com but maybe if you google her name and/or article name, it'll be out there in cyberspace somewhere. It was a very, very good article.

I'm sure many folks will have some good resources to share with you.

Here's a link to a free booklet that starts with thinking you might want to adopt a dog and goes through choosing the type of dog, the shelter/rescue, meeting the dog, bringing the dog home, training and socialization. I skimmed it and it is pretty good -- talks about matching the dog to your lifestyle, the fact that the shelter personality isn't necessarily what to expect after the dog becomes comfortable in the new home, emphasizes positive reinforcement, and addresses the alpha myth vs a true pack leader.
