"CHAI" Need Chow info

Post by ladybug »

I was recently adopted by a chow. We have named her "CHAI" A tea drink populer here is Seattle. I have been told she is a pure bread because her tounge and mouth is completly blue-black.
1) is it true that she could be pure bread if her tounge is dark? or could it be all dark and still not be a pure bread :?:
thanks for the help, as I know nothing about these dogs, except that I am now reading on them in the chow book i have just purchased.

Bring her to a vet and see if she has a chip. Then you can see what her blood line is. Or you can read up on what AKC defines as the ideal chow chow. Without knowing the blood line theres no real point in caring if its "pure" or not. You wouldn't want to mate her with her brother now do ya?

THANKS ANDYMAN. UNFORTUNATLY SHE DID NOT HAVE A CHIP. THE VET SAID PURE BREAD, BUT I AM ACTUALLY ASKING BECAUSE SHE HAD 5 PUPS LAST WEEK. SURRPRISE! I CAN NOT IMAGINE ANYONE ALLOWING HER TO RUN AROUND FREE EVEN IF SHE ISN'T PURE BREAD. WE CHECK WITH THE LOCAL POUND, AND THE SHELTERS, AND SO ON, NO ONE REPORTED A MISSING CHOW. THE VET SAID SHE WAS PURE BREAD, BUT AS I KNOW NOTHING ABKOUT THE DOG OR THE BREAD AND SHE NOW HAS THESE PUPS, I WAS JUST WONDERING IF THAT MENT PURE BREAD OR IF THEY COULD HAVE A BLUE-BLACK TOUNGE AND STILL NOT BE PURE-BREAD. WE ARE GLAD TO HAVE HER, AND DO NOT CARE WHETHER OR NOT SHE IS PURE BREAD, BUT JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PUPS ARE. I HAVE CONTACT A LOCAL AGENCY TO TAKE THE PUPS IF I CAN NOT FIND THEM GOOD HOMES. BUT SO FAR WE HAVE ONLY TWO THAT ARE NOT CLAIMED. GIVEN THAT WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT MIX THEY ARE.
WE PLAN ON HAVING HER SPADE, IN A FEW OMONTHS, AND BELIEVE ME, WE ARE GLAD SHE FOUND US. AND JUST IN TIME. AGAIN THANKS ANYMAN FOR YOUR INPUT.

congrats on the pups ladybug. Those little baby's can be soo cute. Just do me a favor, keep the family together atleast till 8 weeks of age. The little chow chow's really do need their mother to teach them manners. If the baby pups don't get socialized properly and removed too early they can develop temper problems which could lead to agression and ultimately destroyed. A lot of it has to do with the genes also. Let me know how it goes with the little pups. I can't wait to breed Bubbles, she's only 4 months old so I have to wait a couple years. Your so lucky to have pups now!

Blue/Black tongue

Post by kingalls »

Hi,
I don't think that a completely blue/black tongue is a complete indicator that your Chai is pure bred or not.
My Shiloh (the rescue that found us :D ) has a completely blue/black tongue but she is not a pure chow. My Mr. Nahkohe is a cream Chow who came from Chow Chow parents. He started out with a pink tongue and a blue/black "racing stripe" down the middle of his tongue. It has since taken over most of his tongue but not all of it.
Also, as some of the others may advise you, Chows have a distinct smell. Although Mr. Nahkohe is all Chow Chow, Shiloh's smell is much stronger than Mr. N. In the mornings, I will get down on my knees and cradle her head while I bury my nose near her muzzle and say "Oh you stinky Chow Chow"...she just yawns and waits for that morning rub. I haven't been around another Chow that isn't mine so I can't compare the smell. Wouldn't that be a line? "Pardon me, but may I smell your Chow?"

Also, I second Andy's suggestion about the chip. From your readings you may have found out that they are not the best with recall. I had Shiloh's and Mr. N's done when they each got fixed.

Congratulations on the extra member of the family.
No doubt you will have found out, as Karen has said, the smell she has. Not at all like ordinary dogs. I too bury my nose in my Milly and Mabel's fur to get a fix - the smell is gorgeous, definately Chow.
That is not the only thing you will find out - you refer to her as a dog - first mistake! She is not a dog she is a Chow and you better believe it!!
She will know it so you better get used to it!!
She will have you sorted out in her mind before you have got her sorted - she will run her life as she wants. You will find she is very intelligent, and she will be loyal to you. She will not tolerate being shouted at and you must never hit her. Indeed, you will find you will never need to. She won't play like dogs do - she will think chasing a ball or retrieving a stick or whatever, is stupid. Don't be hurt at her possible aloofness - if you think she is being distant, look into her eyes and you will see the love there but that is as good as it gets. You probably will never be overwhelmed with big shows of love - kisses will be rare, probably, so you will be spared getting your tonsils washed as you would if you had a Boxer!! :D
Be careful when you take her for a walk - Chows are not very trustworthy - if let off the lead for a run, they tend to - run - recall is not their best actions. I would never trust Milly and Mabel - we tried it once when they were about 12 months old and they decided there was a big world to discover and one went one way and one went the other - we had the hell's own job to catch them - we have never let them off their leads since.
I am sure you will have a wonderful time learning about your Chow.
I hope all goes well with the babies.
Purple kisses from Milly and Mabel.

Hmmm what kind of distict smells should I smell? I can't smell a thing from either of my chow's (Bubbles is pure and flukey isn't.) And believe me they don't get a lot of baths. However I do smell this funny thing coming out of bubbles every once in a while. Lady's pheremones?

Welcome Chai and her person!
My Kodi is 90/10% chow/gsd mix, but her tongue is 99.9% blue-black, so no indication of purity IMO.
The "smell" is almost like an incense to me. It's unique and wonderful!
Take care all,
Purple kisses all around,
Cindy & Kodi

Incense is a good description of it! Rogan especially has it when he is excited. Almost like a musky scent. My husband calls it "Duppy Poof" :? but it is a definite Chow thing. Unlike my rottweiler, who just plain stinks!

Good luck with your new darling! Being chosen by a Chow is an honor - one I can tell you completely recognize and respect. They are unlike any other animal you have ever known; they are wonderful and unique. Enjoy her!

CHAI

Post by ladybug »

Thanks all!!! I am so happy!!!
Chai is so well behaved. I can hardly believe it. She is finally feeling better and I can see that love devotion you all talk about. And believe me it is easy to return that.
She is being a good mother. And we are helping her as much as possible to get them socialised. There eyes just opened, but already they seem to like being held and cauldeld by human hands. I know what you meen about a chows independance. Thanks for the advise.
i have gotten a book on chows to learn as much as possible.
oh, the smell...yes. a musky smell, not a dirty dog smell.
love to all the chow chos and their families!!!

I have posted my chow book on this site, and if you have time to download it you will find so much about chows, I do hope you will be able to read it, it's called Dogs in my bed there is quite a lot of it so it will take time to copy go into save as and then save all the chapters, and I am sure you will find it very interesting
Good luck with her, she is the best thing to happen in your life
