Welcome Bubbles!

Post by kingalls »

Hi Bubbles!
Welcome to this Chow Chow forum. We checked out your pictures - what a pretty girl Chowling you are!! There are several here that are in the Bay Area. We aren't in the Bay Area but close. We are in Hollister, CA.
Shiloh is a Chow mix that found us when she was about 3 months old (stray) and Mr. Nahkohe (aka Mr. N) was born on January 8, 2004 in Edmonton, Canada. He made his long journey to California when he was about 9 weeks old.
We hope you enjoy these forums and the many great people and Chow Chows that also visit here regularly from around the world.
Karen, Jeff, Shiloh, and Mr. N :D

Hi Bubbles and her person, you sure are a cutie-pie!

We live in San Jose, and have a mostly chow (red) and part german shepard mix, named Kodi. We adopted her from the Humane Society in October 2003 when she was about 2 years old. She's such a love!
Welcome to the forum and we look forward to hearing more about Bubbles.

Hello Bubbles! You are just a beautiful little girl chowling. I have two chow girls called Milly and Mabel who are now four and a half. They are litter sisters and very good, sometimes!
Lovely to hear from you and it will be splendid hearing about all the mischief you get up to in the future!
By, the way, we live in the U.K. :D :D

Gosh, I just took a look at the web page and she does so remind me of Milly when she was a baby. I love the way they lie on theie tummies with their back feet, out - Milly and Mabel still do that. Beautiful!

Judy,

Thats really funny. I was afraid she'd stopped laying on her belly with her feat out. I love that! I just thought it was a puppy thing. Since she's still a baby, I was wondering how are your dogs with children? I want to socialize her with everyone but kids just aren't around when you need em. I don't want to take her to a school since I'm working 9-5!

Karen,

Hhow the heck did Shiloh find you guys at 3months old? And how the heck did someone let a 3month old run away? I'm glad atleast Shiloh find a home before getting run over by a car.

Hi Andyman!

Welcome, welcome! We're from the Bay Area. Are you in the city itself? Bubbles' photos are sooo cute! Made me want to break out Zhuyo's baby book. He's the cream one and he's 13.5. Also, at 13.5 he still lies on his belly with his feet out (sometime one and sometimes both). I adopted Miss Pooh Bear last year (June 6) from the Peninsula Humane Society. She's around 9 but acts like such a chowling (that's what we call chow puppies on this site). I'm thinking of throwing her a picnic "1 year with us" adoption party in June. As a rescue, I didn't know what to expect regarding her and children. I brought her home not knowing that there was a big fat "x" on top of the younger children pic in her records. Well, she's amazing with kids! If you have any friends with children, you might want to do some basic training with Bubbles involving the children. Perhaps on a free weekend or after work, the sun doesn't go down till 7:30pm lately. Zhu is also excellent with children. One time at a family party, I saw my then 2 year old nephew launch off from the stairs to go on top of Zhu for an infamous chow ride and happy trails they went.

Glad you found the site. Wait till you hear Shiloh's story. I LOVE her story!

Take care,

Lou, yup I'm in the city. Actually right between city college and cow palace. We should hook up. When you say Zhuoyo's 13.5 do you mean 13.5 years or 13.5 months?

You bay area folks do know there's a dog park and great walking trials at Golden Gate park?
Ah the good old days when I could walk Pekoe all over the bay area, down here were lucky if we can find a park let alone a trail, all Pekoe and I do now is dodge traffic on our walks.

I don't really think Chows and dog parks are a good mix even though I took Pekoe to Golden Gate, Alameda and Berkley every day but if you stay with them and never let them out of your site it should be OK. Pekoe became somewhat social at the dog parks she got to where she would at least tolorate other dogs in the area.

Hey Andyman! Zhu is 13.5 YEARS! But he's still as cute, loveable and huggable as a 13.5 month year old, albeit his right paw (tendonitis) seems to forecast rain. I'm really lucky. He's such a wonderful chow and I know he's hanging in there for me!

Jeff - Do you have a copy of "The California Dog Lover's Companion"? I have an old copy, from Zhu's teenager days. I refer to it from time to time. We've gone on road trips from the author's suggestions. There's oodles of places in San Diego County to take Pekoe to... Cleveland Ntl. Forest rates at 4 paws, one human foot and off-leash okay (4 paws being the top rating, 1 human foot means there is something special there for humans to enjoy other than being their dogs chauffeur... Coronado City Beach rates equally as high... Del Mar City Beach... In El Cajon, Lake Jennings County Park and Louis Stelzer Regional Park rate 3 paws... San Diego itself has at least 14 cool places! I can xerox and send to you if you like. Otherwise, come pay the bay area a visit! I'm sure Pekoe misses the smells of the Northern California tree squirrel!

Hello, yes they still do it - stick their feet out - especially when they are happy, i.e. after a good walk or after their favourite meal or after their Aunty Carolyn has been to visit!
Regarding children, I think you are wise to socialise Bubbles as much as you can. We used to take Milly into town as soon as she had finished her pouppy jabs. Now you can imagine the impact that had - Milly just looked like bubbles and that is so cute. Fred and I would have queue of people, especially parents with young children wanting to 'have a go' of her!!
It was quite embarrassing at first because there would be five, or six or seven families waiting. But - it was excellent for Milly Ching 'cos she loved the attention and the children loved her and it was an excellent poublic relations excercise. Mid morning on Saturday was a good time and it would take us three-quarters of an hour to go 75 yards!
Try it - think about where the shopping centre is or whatever and where people are because you can bet your bottom dollar people will stop. When Mabel joined us when she and Milly were 6 months old, we immediately took her too and she loved it. The result is two beautifully socialised Chow girls.
Purple kisses to bubbles from M & M. :) :)

I forgot to mention, there is an excellent vet near your area. Ocean Avenue Veterinary Hospital. Our LaoTzu was referred there (Dr. McElroy) in 2001 for specialty surgery. He had a tumor growing under his neck and needed to get a couple of salivary glands removed, etc. etc. They were very nice to us and extremely gentle with Lao (he's a chow too, 10 years old now). Great follow-up, gave us gifts and care packages. Even Zhu got a toothcare kit from them! Our family vet is in Daly City. Just a simple hometown kind of vet. When there is a problem he can't fix, he gives excellent referrals. They have low cost vaccinations every Saturday. For instance, Rabies is $5.00 versus $30 (normal value). Very non-descript, very hometown, his youngest daughter is at UCDavis studying to be a vet.

If you don't plan to show Bubbles, I can recommend good groomers to you that aren't afraid of chows.

Recommend away.. We actually have an appointment tonight over at Pets Unlimited but I wouldn't mind giving other vets a try. Do you have an address and location for the vet you are refering to? I'm not sure if I plan to show bubbles or not. Half of me wants to because I think she could win or has the potential. I'd also like to breed her some day. She is just the most perfect and cute chow I've ever seen (perfect square, purple tounge, good manners, etc). Hate to loose the family genes after 14 years.

Hi Andy - We are very happy that Shiloh found us. Normally we keep our gate closed but one day it must have been open and she let herself in and hid for days. We think 2-3 days. We noticed that cat food was disappearing everyday. Also, our oversized yard is the typical English garden on steriods so our visitor had many places to hide...but Jeff noticed that there were flower beds being flattened out. We thought our cat was doing it even though it was such a big area being flattened. One afternoon my husband saw something larger than a cat run past our sliding glass door going out to the backyard. That was the first sighting of our secret visitor. He tried to shoo her out the gate but my cat was sitting there so Shiloh put the brakes on, made a u-turn and back into the yard. Not knowing about types of dogs, I went up and down the street asking if anyone lost a Pomeranian. My neighbor came over and took one look at the little puppy hiding in the bushes and said - That's a Chow! She had ticks, fleas, matted hair..etc. It took alot of patience to coax her into trusting us enough to let us pet her. I think about 3 months before she completely stopped hiding under the deck.
So she is a "rescue" that found us. We got Mr. N to be her companion and it's helped her tremendously.
It's a fun story to tell - hope you don't mind me being long winded about it!

Also - does Bubbles tuck one or both of her paws in when lying down?

That is an incredible story! My god it should be published! Its like the best suprise anyone could have! Thinking a rodent or cat was in your yard just to find a cute little chow instead! I wonder if your chow had a chip inserted a while ago with AKC numbers attached. I've always kinda wondered about that with lost dogs or dogs at the SPCA. I really regret not knowing the family history of my other chow (Flukey). Flukey's now suffering from seizures once every 3 months.

Bubbles is kinda weird. She tucks her paws or she stretches out with both legs and paws , and sometimes she sleeps completely on her back with paws everywhere!

Does anybody else put their dogs picture online? Love to see other chow puppies. Everytime I take bubbles to costco people are always amazed. Jean Donaldson just recently met bubbles and she says she's never seen a cuter chow. I get that all time time in the bay area. Where are you chow owners hiding! Wheres the club?? I saw the one in Davis but that one seems like its been shutdown.

Shiloh's chip story

Post by kingalls »

Andy - ha! here's another funny story..when I was able to catch Shiloh and take her to the vet, he did do the microchip scan. My heart sunk when the dang scanner went off. I was practically in tears as he gave me all the details on who to call, etc. I had becomed so attached to her right away. Jeff and I decided that if we find out who the owner was and if they wanted her back they would have to pay alot of $$. Then we thougt we wouldn't want to give her back to someone that may have abused her. In the follow-up visit with the vet, he asked if I called the 800 number. I said no. He just smiled and said he had to show me something. He brought the scanner back out. He showed me the number on the scanner, he scanned Shiloh and the number came up...The whole time, the scanner was scanning it's own number!! They figured it out when the last pets they scanned all had the same number  ....Shiloh now has a chip - it's the one we had put in her.
(I must not want to be working today...such long posts - sorry about that!)

I've heard real good things about Pets Unlimited. So you might just want to stay put there. It's a bit of a drive though. Ocean Avenue Vet is on Ocean Avenue. Right across from City College itself. I'll try to find their biz card. I don't live in SF county so I don't have a SF phone book to look their info up that way.

See told you Shiloh's story was cool! Not knowing the full story at the time, we were really hard on Karen (well I think some of us showed our savage side) when she first posted for help. We told her A CHOW NEEDS TO BE INSIDE! GET YOUR CHOW INSIDE!

Thats a pretty cool story. I'm glad the scanner scanned itself but I sure do feel bad for the original owner if the dog wasn't abused and simply slipped out of the yard. Baby chows sure isn't cheap. But you do fall in love with them almost instantly. I mean how can you say no to that face. Where does shiloh sleep? Bubbles sleeps with me in my room.

Andy welcome aboard! Cherub bubbles is a lil sweetheart!! I remember looking at Cherub chows when we were hunting for our new chow babe. Beuatiful dogs they have. I really enjoyed looking at bubbles site! Will put up some pic's of Nanuk to share when I get a chance.

Well we aren't from the Bay area but as a matter of fact we are going to visit over memorial weekend for my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniv. I'm just praying that we have a safe drive with Nanuk and all goes well being so far from home. Anyway if anyone knows of any places near Santa Clara for dogs to go we would love to check it out. Also we were thinking of going to Santa Cruz if anyone knows of any dog friendly area's or if dogs are even allowed on the beach.

My husband and I had been looking for just the right dog. We had not chosen one because the decision was so hard, and we felt we needed just the right dog for our life style. As it turned out, We were adopted by a chow. The dog chose us.
She was a stray Dog, hiding under dead cars in an industrial area. I saw her hiding, and afraid that first day. The next day I decided to try to help her if she was still there. She was. She looked hungery and afraid. I was also a little afraid too, not knowing if she would bite. But when I looked at her and told her that if she came to me I would take her home and take care of her, she came, she jumped in my car without any prompting. As it turns out, there was nothing to fear. The vet said it was the most well behaved dog (especially for a stray) he had ever seen. And as it turned out she was pregnant! One week later she had 5 healthy pups.
I think she is pure bread. I have been told her black-blue toung gives it away. IS IT TRUE THAT IF THE DOG HAS A COMPLETLY DARK TOUNGE SHE IS PURE BRED?

I don't know if its true about the pure bred Chow's blue/black tongue, but my Max-A-Million has a full black mouth and by my vets explanation, he is 3/4 Chow and maybe 1/4 lab. My Mahayana is pure Chow, but has a tiny pink spot on the left side of her tongue. The remainder of her mouth is blue-black. There's always an exception to the rule!
