Problem with Max's eyes, nose & mouth

I have a chow chow who is 8 years old. For the past couple of months he has loss his hair around his eyes and has the same things on his mouth. This crusts around his mouth. It is now starting on his nose. It seems to be in the mucous producing areas.

Has anyone had this problem with their chows. I took him to the vet and he wants to do several biopies of the areas which is very expensive. Max also has some itching and scaling on his tummy (& inner thighs) which has also resulted in loss of hair.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would have them check for allergies first.
Is max on a good quality food? I give mine lamb & rice.

Jasmine got scaly on her rump, and was loosing hair like crazy, turned out to be thyroid. But with her
skin as bad as it was, we changed everything. Funny looking skinny dog with a mane around her head.

Could it be a yeast infection? Just a thought.

You throw a bunch of stuff at a wall, eventually something sticks!
