Silly Chow!!
Hello everyone, hope everyone has kept well.
Penelope is getting bigger by the minute!!! She's 3 mos. and over 20 lbs! She's gotten almost all of her shots (a couple left in the series and then at 4 mos. her rabies) and we can't wait to go to puppy class (which starts on the 26th).
After a bunch of food changes I've finally settled on Blue. The ingredients aren't 5 or even 6 stars but it doesn't make her vomit or go to the bathroom constantly like the solid gold and she's usually willing to eat almost all of it. I'm glad to have found a food that we all (her, me, and the bank) agree on.
But recently she's started doing something really funny! I usually give her water in a larger wider mouthed bowl and one day she thought I was sleeping as she started stepping in it, splashing the water everywhere, and eventually she got so excited she started trying to dig! IN her water bowl! FULL of water!! I've tried giving her smaller bowls and just refilling it more often but nothing will deter her! She just looves to get everything wet and make her water all dirty! It's super cute, kind of strange, and just downright chow silly!
Does anyone else's chows do this?

This is so cute - what a funny girl Penelope is. Bramble would rather die than get her feet wet if she doesn't have to!!
Re: Silly Chow!!
LOL, I can picture her doing that, Yoshi loves to do that, It became a problem because I have wood floors. To solve this we got a kiddie pool and he goes outside to dip his toes. On hot days he will jump in slosh around and then go sit in the sun. When the kiddie pool is set up he doesn't dip his toes but in the winter he still uses his water dish

Re: Silly Chow!!
you will be wanting to get one of these, they are a must have for most chow owners..............

they do a fairly good job in keeping the chest/neck from getting wet when they drink. not 100% mind you but better than drinking out of a regular bowl. they are also spill proof, you can turn it upside down and water will not come out due to the design. it would be harder for her to jump in it to.

Re: Silly Chow!!
My other chow use to see her reflection and paw at it .. I ended up getting rid of the steel bowl and got a hard plastic (it didn't reflect an image as well).. but she would bark at it and back up and go look again and then take her paw and knock it.. It was very funny.. except for clean up.. thankfully Nikki never picked up that trick from Oneill.

Re: Silly Chow!!
That is Louie's favorite thing to do!
I too have the same bowls as IdahoMike posted. I have 1 for each dog at home and 1 for the car. Mailie does not like to get her feet wet at all (she even goes potty on the concrete if the grass is wet!) but Louie loves to paw his bowl then roll in the water. He did it twice when we were having lunch out the other day and I forgot his bowl in the car. He was a mess!

Kyra has from day one put her big ol' paws in her water bowl....then started diggin' and still to this day, 2 yrs later.....she still does that when she is hot, that and I think she thinks its fun Kearra wouldn't stick her paws in water if her life depended on it
Thanks Sweetpea!
Re: Silly Chow!!
I had an Irish Setter as a kid that loved trying to swim in her galvanized water tub outside. I would believe these same 'swimmers' would have no problem using a kiddie pool...
Re: Silly Chow!!
I always know when the weather is starting to warm up from winter to spring, because that is when Sophie starts up again with her water bowl. After she is done splashing in it, she likes to then lay in the water that she's splashed out.

Re: Silly Chow!!
LOL, that's pretty funny. I don't have any dogs that do that, but I have 2 cats that do. Nicky does his "water dance" EVERY time before he drinks. He used to splash, now he just digs (daddy scared him away from playing in the water because he always made a HUGE wet mess). We got a kitten after we adopted him and he has taught her his little dance and she now mimicks him every time she drinks. (She is now over a year and she still does it.)
Carter hates getting his feet wet. He dodges puddles and hates wet grass. I was surprised one time when he decided to play in a stream (although he had to kick his wet feet back at me).

Henry is another that would go to the ends of the earth if it meant he kept his paws dry. He was laying out in a thunder storm just the other day - would he come in??? Not without the bribery of a processed cheese slice being unwrapped and waved at him. Why? His paws were nice and dry tucked up under him - never mind that he was soaking water up like a spongepocket comercial
The water bowl paddle is too cute though - I think a kiddie pool is in order here - one happy chow comming up

Re: Silly Chow!!
When Milly was a baby she used to dig her water bowl - she also used to tip it up deliberately and then go sliding on the kitchen floor having a wonderful time. When her bowl was empty, she would pick it up and throw it into the sitting room. We solved that by buying her a big, heavy brown pottery water bowl. Once she grew out of the baby chowling stage, she hates to get her paws wet.
