My critique is that your Chow is a purebred, with what we refer to around here as an 'open face', meaning he has less folding on his face, and a touch longer muzzle than some other examples. Is he to the standard? Not likely, but a good portion of the Chows in this world are not to the standard in some way or another. Is he a beautiful example of a family Chow? In every way!

He's a chow all right. Like someone else said he's got an open face, he looks to be built nicely, very nicely cobbled, or squarely built, good hind legs, we'd need to see several more views to actually critique him better. Is he showable? Not in the US most likely. His coat would fault him out, but he could do obedience.

Congrats and welcome to the site. He's a handsome pup, no doubt. For some reason, the fold at the outer edge of the eyes and the flew area remind me of Millie and Mabel. : ) Whether it is because of the illusion caused by the lighting in these photos or my impressions of the overhead view photo, I tend to feel there's also something other than Chow.

What's his name?

He looks all Chow to me. Having said that, one thing I did notice was his pigmentation was lighter than most red Chows. The dudley nose leather and pink in the mouth are seen more in creams, and to a lesser degree, cinnamons. He may be a cinnamon that looks red in the photos, however. He is a very nice looking boy. Unless you planned to show him, he is perfect!

Thanks for sharing your adorable chow photos with us. He looks purebred to me but looking at his coat, my guess is maybe he's a mix between rough and smooth chows. As for his face, my dog Chelsea, was AKC purebred and had a longer, English style face than the purebred standard. This would have disqualified her from shows, too, but it also allowed her to breathe much easier and she didn't have problems with anesthesia, as do some chows with the breed standard type faces. The most important part is that he's beautiful and being spoiled by his family--as is his due.
