surgery for bear
We have some options for bear and his eye surgery. Our vet said he was getting prices from a specialist who does this type of surgery, but here in melbourne there is an animal hospital called Lort smith and our vet is involved alot with this organization and says they could do bears eyes there for alot cheaper than the specialist. we are waiting on news for when we can meet with the vets at LORT smith and to talk about it...what questions do i ask?? i would much rather the specialist because they know that field.but the prices are ridiculous and bears eyes are sore and he cant wait till we save up the money...so i just need to have main questions to ask them so i get an idea if they know what theyre saying.
we also got results back for his cysts and a huge yucky mole that was on his belly, all clear!! his tooth is out now and we found out he had an infection in his jowls??(not sure how to spell that ,its the floppy bit of skin around his mouth...)caused from a grass seed that we missed .hes weighing in at 26.8 kgs and want to keep him at this weight because of his spinal problem,,,but overall he had a great visit with our vet...but the vet seems to think his anxiety for kate when she leaves is a problem so we have to ignore him when we leave the house....but when we get home he goes crazy...oh and on a side note....bears owners have a new chow puppy....dont know where or how long they have had it.we seen it on their front lawn 2 nights ago....so the trauma begins....again...

Re: surgery for bear
Whoever it was that said you shouldn't have taken Bear they have laws in Australia, its not like the US sure got that one right, In the US those People wouldn't be allowed to own another Chow/dog and they sure the hell wouldn't be displaying it on the front lawn. Someone better get this Puppy out of there before there's another tortured chained up Chow dieing on the street. Make that Chows dieing in the street I just remembered they wanted to breed so chow #2 shouldn't be far off.kez65 wrote:...oh and on a side note....bears owners have a new chow puppy....dont know where or how long they have had it.we seen it on their front lawn 2 nights ago....so the trauma begins....again...
Re: surgery for bear
Since your vet has seen Bear and Daisy, he knows how they were treated by these people, aren't there laws in Australia that could help get this chow out, and keep these people from getting any other animals? I
Thanks so much sweetpea!!!
Re: surgery for bear
That's great that the cyst and mole were nothing serious! Little, by little, he is gaining...it is so wonderful to hear. As for going to the cheaper Lort Smith. If your vet has been involved with them and is confident in their ability, I think I'd go for them. His eyes must be quite painful. I've never gone through this, so I don't really know what to ask. I'd probably want a run down of the whole procedure and check on the anesthesia used, since chows can be sensitive to it. Good luck, and I hope all will go well!

Re: surgery for bear
i told my vet yesterday and he couldnt believe it either. im sure he is going to do something,im over the stress of it all...seeing daisy go the way she did was pretty horrible and i dont think i can watch it again. I doubt once rspca are notified that pup wont stay but theyre sneaky people....Denise said it was there last night too,so i dont doubt at all its their pup.
time will tell i hope as to what happens.
but the good news is..bears safe....

Re: surgery for bear
You will want to ask them if they use isoflourine gas for anthesia(sp?) This is important as Chows often have very bad reactions to other types of anthesia. Also you'll want to know about their after care; how long will he be there, will someone be with him etc. Also for entropian surgery sometimes they can do a tacking first, (this involves stiching the eyelids tighter but not actually doing any removal of tissue) this may be a good intermideate measure until you have the money for the specialst. Don't be afraid to ask how many of these types of surgeries they've done. It's like getting a human's eyelids tacked up, you wouldn't go to a urologist for it now would you? Same thing, different vets have experience in different things, and any good vet is more than willing to discuss their experience and give references it they're not; my answe has always and will always be: find a new vet.
I mention the tacking option because Bear is gaining weight and this can change the shape of his eyes naturally, so you may want to wait until he is closer to his permanent weight before you have the full surgery done, but you do need to find a way to get his eye lids off his eyes or he may end up with corneal damage.
I still think it is so great that you rescued this poor boy and I can't believe those people have another one; that is not acceptable, maybe their identies need to be posted to legit breeders in Australia and the condition that both Bear and Daisy were found in and what happened to poor Daisy.
