Rolled Leather Dog Collar
Well sence I had such a bad time with the cheap quality rolled leather dog collar we were using before, I thought I would post about this great place I found online. The collar we used in the past cause alot of mating and besides that the ink was also transfering off on to Nanuk beautiful cream coat.
I just recieved my new collar from Schaaf Saddlery & Leather Work. I ordered the all natural leather (no dye) fine round 1/4 collar with a 1/2 at the buckle. I know in my area you can not buy a collar that big without it being at least 1/2 and then a 1 inch buckle. Also upon ordering he said this collar should last the lifetime of the dog. I just want a collar that will last a long time, hold my babies ID and not leave any color markings. I was very impressed with the quality and wanted to pass this info on to all of you.
My husband also ordered a belt for himself and it is beautiful, and heavy duty!

Brisco and Dixie's new rolled leather collars showed up yesterday. If anyone is interested, I think that these are very good quality and perfect for Chows.
Like Samorrathis said, they are very small in diameter and the leather is quite smooth so as not to wear the hair. You can't even tell that mine have them on, the hair just goes around them nicely instead of flattening it down. The buckle area is nice and small but very strong. He makes them to order so you can choose the length and the color to suit your Chow perfectly.

No matter where you go, there you are.
I bought the small diameter rolled collar from Walter Schaaf and a black leather lead. THanks to Samorrathis and Nanuk's suggestion and link.
They are both well made and the small rolled collar is not tangling as much in his mane as his cheaper larger rolled collar did.
The leash is pliable and will soften more with use. It is very comfortable to use and light.
Thanks again for the link. Murphy got his collar 2 weeks ago and is very comfortable in it.

Glad you both got your collars. Nanuk loves his, he wouldn't even know it was there if it didn't have his tags attached. When I brushed him yesterday I almost forgot to put his collar back on but he didn't forget, must be his security blanket. I think if I was to order another one however I would maybe order a silver buckle. I think the brass tarnishes a bit but I'm sure it will clean right off the leather.

OH my word... I just realized this business is in Cincinnati and fairly close to me!!! Small world! Explains why he is so nice!
Were you able to get the engraved plate on the rolled collars?? I assume those are only available on the traditional flat leather collars.

Ok... upon closer inspection of just how tiny the collar is, I now realize what a silly question I asked about the engraved nameplate! Duh!

Ok quick question.....I wanted a collar I could just leave on Kearra and Kyra....click their leads on and go walk click it off when we come home sooooo he said I should get the 1/2 in. said you can't walk them on a 1/4 in.....??? So I ordered the 1/2 in.....Did you all get the 1/4 inch just to keep on them inside??? Or could I have gotten the 1/4in and walked the girls with the thinner one....and he just misunderstood me??? I would hate to have to bucket a collar on and then bucket and unbucket another to go for a walk????That was my thinkin' anyway I haven't been keeping a collar on my girls while inside and just clicking one of those flat click collars on for going for a walk BUT you guys made me think not a good idea cuz if they get out they won't have a collar on......
Darn am I confused again??? Or did I order a wider collar than I needed???

Thanks Sweetpea!
I have the thinnest one & purely use it to keep their tags on & therefore it stays on 24/7. I use a harness or martingale collar to walk the terrible twosome. I just pop the harness or collar OVER their leather collar. I have walked Millie on her's once but wouldn't make a habit of it, given that they both go cujo over squirrels. Hope that helps.
Thank you Elodie!

I had one of those I use to walk the dogs with, the 1/2" version, within a year they wore it out and my big knuckle head LuLu that likes to take off like a rocket after she does her business broke it. That's not the only carnage I have had over the years with collars and leads, so it isn't that bad I suppose. I did like the way those didn't pull their fur though. LuLu broke the stitching out of a 1/2" rope lead a couple of months ago, she almost got away from me on that one, luckily it was the handle end and I was able to hold on.

Sounds like poor lil' LuLu may be your challenge in life sometimes, Sam!!!
Kearra and Kyra don't pull very much....well Kearra still does her little weirdo thing, she pulls like crazy going because she is soooo excited and she might get to see another dog but going back she is the perfect little walker and has the best manners I guess the only advantage is she is sooo tiny that she hasn't broken any collars or leads. Kyra has always had good manners since I got her so maybe these collars will last them since they are alot stronger than the ones I have been using or at least I hope so

Yeah right, poor little LuLu! She about jerks my arm out of the socket when she does that. She doesn't really pull on the walk, but she has a tendancy to change directions if she smells something, and then that bolting after she relieves herself, you have to brace yourself for that.

Actually I was going to try and make it to Chowfest, and bring LuLu, she needs some socializing, I want to take her out in the show ring soon, can't do that without some socializing.
You should have seen the nut about an hour ago, I was out in the kennel area racking the leaves up and her, Po, Frosty, Betty, and Buddy started running wide open back and forth in there. Lu made a turn up at one end and I don't know if she was going to jump the AC unit or what, but she hit it and the wires and freon line so hard she moved it on the pad. She is like a moose, not much slows her down! Pea gravel was flying through the air too, it's total insanity in there when they get wound up. Then you got Buddy scratching out in there slinging gravel everywhere, it's really not safe!
I hope I get to come over, I want you to see this tank of a dog in person, maybe she can give yours some pointers!
