Good Chow books?

Post by Sylvia »

I'm new to this forum but have been reading it for the last few months. I've been considering getting a chow chow but have never owned one or been owned by one. I searched the internet and have read quite a bit about them. The next step I thought I should take is to get some books on the breed to find out more. I know there are many books on Chow Chows, but are there any specific ones that are particularly good for someone who is considering becoming a first time Chow mom.

Thanks, Sylvia

Most of the Chow books i have found or bought have all been about Chow puppies and most of those are just general raising a dog books, the covers all look nice though. I don't think your going to find any better advice in any book then what you will find on this site. Unless someone has owned or lived with a Chow or have worked with Chows there is no way they will know a Chow so the best advice will come from the people on this site.

Here are a few other that may be of interest.

Jeff's right... you won't find a better resource for practical chow knowledge than this site. I wish I had found it when I was blundering around trying to get information to help my rescue chow, Sophie. Fortunately, it worked out fine for us and I didn't make too many mistakes. Chows pretty much tell you if you're doing it wrong. :D

If she hadn't shown up at my backdoor, I wouldn't have thought of seeking out a chow as a breed... after having Sophie in my life, I couldn't imagine being without a chow. You won't regret it, good luck!

Sylvia,
this site will have all of the experience and knowledge that you will ever need when it comes to chows... puppy or adult. From nutrition, to behavior, it is all here. No book will give you what this site has to offer. Everyone here has experience with the breed and altho we don't always agree, the basics are all the same. Not to mention the fact that here is where you will find kindness and support in your decision to be owned by a chow. I think everyone here will agree that you have found your book in chowchow.org. :)

I was just wondering the same thing! I was looking for the equivelant to one of the better Pit Bull books I have (there are several). I guess someone on this list needs to write a Chow Chow book! So, one of you experts, please get on it. Thanks! :D
Because owning just one banned breed isn't enough!

Being a new to chows myself, I agress that is THE best place to go for info on chows. My husband and I have tons of book on chows, but I've pretty much put them away. Every chow book I pick up, the first thing I do is read the bio on the author(s), I've noticed quite a few times that the authors have no experience living with a chow.

I can't tell my friends and family enough about the kind, knowledgable people on this site. I feel so comfortable asking questions and know that the answers I get will help me the most. There's nothing more re-assuring that there are people out there who have been there, done that and are willing to share to share their experiences. Also, there's nothing as enjoyable as reading all the accounts on the site, they just make you smile! :D

The forums are the best. So much has changed since most of the good books came out. Some of my favorites are "the world of the Chow chow" , The book of the chow chow". I thought both of them were excellent. Great pictures. I enjoy looking for relatives of cody in them. The Chow annuals are great too.

This is good to know. Thanks for all the responses. Thanks Jeff for the links and Scott for the book recommendations. Should I decide to be owned by a Chow, I'm sure I'll be back with various questions. :)

Good book

Post by Brisco »

Sylvia,
There is a great book called "the book of the Chow Chow" I first bought it back in 1980 when I got my first Chow and I think it cost me $30.00 U.S.
It's a very large hard back book with 576 pages, lots of info and hundreds of photos. It's an old book published in 1978 but most if not all of the info is still relevant I'm sure. Here is an ebay link and they are selling for only $14.95 now for a new copy. I've never seen any single breed book to compare.

No matter where you go, there you are.

special dogs....Chows!

Post by Sharons Chows »

Since my 1st, Mozart aka MO MO, came into my life by accident and when he left by "accident" to cross the rainbow bridge, my life was never quite the same.
I specifically went to the APL 3 weeks later to find JR...or I should say ...he found me...and he is the best boy!

</center>
Then Alan went to the APL specifically 3 plus months ago to find Cheyenne ...he almost left without her...she was so standoffish....but as he circled the back of her cage and she came back to give him one more look...that was it....she immediately joined our family. She is such a precious girl and has really adjusted.

You can research Chows all that you want....but nothing prepares you for what they really are....as I always say....MYSTICAL BEASTS....nothing quite like anything else!

Sharon,
You are correct. I fell in love with the beauty of the Chow Chow and when it came time to look for one to join our family, I researched and researched. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Chows, afterall I was the parent of many dogs and a Chow is a dog....right!? But after being adopted by Max-A-Million, I've discovered that the Chow is uniqely different from any creature on the planet. Mystical? I think that's a good word to describe such a wonderful creature. :D :D :D

I'm sure that all the reading I can do will never tell me everything there is to know about the Chow I may bring home. Bringing a new member into the family is really just that. They get to know you and you get to know them. However, at this point I'm not in a rush and am trying to take this one step at a time. Thanks for all the responses. I can tell this is a great support site. :D

Carolyn, I must be a little dense today, but I was having problems finding where your book is posted. I was assuming the General Discussions was the area you were referring to but I didn't find it.

I read Carolyn's book, it is in a similar style of James Herriot's books. Very entertaining, and informative. :D Go to page 27 of General Discussion. Carolyn posted on April 23rd, the page keeps changing as we all add posts.
