Update on the Chow/Shepard i posted needing help

Post by Jeff&Peks »

Here's an e-mail i recieved today about Bear

Hi,
I bailed Bear out yesterday! His time was way up so I just had to get
him out. That is the one bad thing about taking the photos and
networking these animals- you get attached and then you REALLY don't
want to see them die.
Bear is a mess- I took him to the vet and the vet mentioned words like
diabetes-cancer- i could hardly sleep last night worrying!! But the
good news is it was just his thyroid. I think normal is something like
2.7 and Bear's is 00000.0001. We have started him on the meds and
hopefully this will make his hair grow back and his skin get better and
he'll lose that weight.
Would LOVE any donations I can get for him- he is going to take
alot of work- and time and money and I am just one person not a group.
You can donate directly to the hospital he is staying at. Echo Park
Animal Hospital 1739 Glendale Blvd. Los Angeles CA 90026 - phone
323-663-1107 - I will send you updates weekly on his progress!
Thank you so much for caring about Bear! The shelter staff as well as
the vets office thought I was like a crazy person for rescueing him-
although what they don't know is what a beautiful dog he will blossom
into- with a little love and some thyroid medication!!

Hi again,

I called the hospital, spoke with Lou, the clinic manager and he did not know about arrangements for donations for either the clinic or on behalf of Bear. I emailed Nikki at the address given in Jeff's post, so hopefully that will get straightened out soon.

Just wanted you all to know.
Take care,

Hi-

Jeff, I didn't mean to 'hijack' your post, but I did write to Nikki and she replied. Turns out the hospital won't take money (checks especially), but she will. You can email her at the email address Jeff gave above and she'll provide her address, etc. The picture she sent of poor Bear at the shelter was just horrific!!!!!

Purple kisses,
This is her reply (minus address for privacy)

Hi,
Yes I just called over to the hospital and they are not going to take donations for Bear because someone check might bounce????? or something like that! Anyways if anyone is willing to donate you can send the check to me at

Nikki xxxxxx

I can send copies of bills to anyone who needs it!
A little more on Bear-
It was discovered today that Bear has SEVERE whip worm- The vet thinks he has had it for a really long time. Which means he has had chronic diarrhea for a long time. This is another reason his skin pigment is soo dark and he has a lot of bald spots etc. With the thyroid thing and the whip worm thing treated Bear when better will have a full CHOWCHOW coat of fur!!! I have been taking alot of before photos I can't wait to see the after photos!!! I have attached a photo of him still at the shelter- that sad face convinced me I had to help him!!

Hi Nikki,

I saw a post about an update on Bear, the rescue you did this week! Thank you!

I called Echo Park hospital, spoke with "Lou", the manager, and he did not know of any arrangements for donations. I called to do that and he said he wasn't set up for it (yet anyway). If you'd give him a call, maybe he could make those arrangements for calls to donate on Bear's behalf.

Thanks and regards!

It's ok to hijack

Post by Jeff&Peks »

No problem, hijack all you want, thanks for the info about the clinic. I will send a donation to her. The clinic should be able to take a credit card or atm.

Update on Bear!

Post by SWANCIN »

All, I have been corresponding abit with Nikki about Bear. Here's an update. I invited her to come to this board - she has lots of questions! I'm sure it'd be ok to use the email link in Jeff's post above to write to her, just mention you're on chowchow.org and it's about Bear.

I have two pictures she's sent. If anyone's interested in a 'before' and a much better 'after' :) picture, I can post them here.

Hi,
Bear is doing pretty good!! He is definitely on the road. He was so afraid at first and hid- but now he is happy to see me and rested his head on my lap yesterday- that was huge!! He is losing the weight on the thyroid medication and the whipworn is gone. I shaved all his gross hair off so he could start new- that was a project. But I think that made us bond because he was so excited to have all that dirty matted hair [lots of ticks] off that he could not help but give in for a back scratch and tummy rub!! He is definitely alot of Chow don't you think from the photos? I seem to be drawn to the Chows at the shelter. Can you give me any tips on how to work with Bear as far as him being Chow? Thanks! Nikki

Bear

Post by Jeff&Peks »

I got the feeling Bear was more Chow then the mix by what Nicki was saying and the way he was acting thats what drew me to him. I mentioned to Nicki in the beginning to come to this site but from what I see at the South LA Shelter she is really busy trying to save the rest of the Chows and non-Chows.
Good for Bear, So that's one rescued and I think 8 more to go that I posted below in Chows in need, Especially the one named Honey Bunny, the one that says I've tried everything to get adopted, Good looking Chow.
