Re: Meet Harvey

I have fostered two chow mixes, a border collie mix, and a pit bull. They have all convinced my wife that my chows are totally wonderful dogs who just happen to shed a bit. You are not a breed snob, rather you are a connoisseur. I am convinced that Chows are the best dogs. Harvey is gorgeous, and is...

Re: Blow dryer

This is what we did with Ursa when she was a puppy. At supper time, we would take the hair dryer and put it on the floor several feet away from her bowl and turn it on low. We would then feed her. As she got used to it, we would move it closer. It took about two weeks for her to get used to it.

Re: Just popped in to say hello

Sirchow, Harvey has been a handful lately. Saturday afternoon, I went to get new tubes for the tires on the aerator, and my son let Harvey in. Harvey managed to catch Yoda. No harm was done, but Harvey is now cat crazy. I think I will make me a holster and carry my spray bottle everywhere. To top it...

Re: My dog, Mimi bit my dad and now he seems hostile against

I will add my two cents. Ursa will react very defensively at night when someone comes to the door. My son and I are included. Two nights each week he teaches a late class, and comes in around 2100. The dogs will alert when his car pulls in the drive, and will go to the door and challenge "the i...

Re: Looking to buy a Chow in NYC

I have two rescue chows, and I believe that both of them are PB. There are many (too many) out there needing rescue. Lately I have seen a number of older chows out there that are in shelters because their owners have either passed away or had to move into assisted living facilities where they could ...

Re: Barking

I like that idea about the cardboard box. I am fostering a dog that probably was left out on a chain. He barks to get attention. I am trying to reduce that. Malachi, my male, took some time adjusting to country life. We have owls, and he would alert bark over them, even when he was in the house. It ...

Re: anyone with cream chow?

I am fostering a white Chow Samoyed mix, and he sure does show dirt. It has been raining here, and we have moles out there in the yard, so the dogs think they have to dig them up. Ursa and Malachi can look good even with the dirt, but Harvey has dirty spots on his muzzle and legs. He likes being bru...

Definitely do the thyroid check. Ursa has issues with her thyroid, and It took some time for us to get her level correct. It caused her to have considerable hair loss, and took some time for it all to return.

Meet Harvey

Through a very dirty story door, is a picture of my oreo cookie. On the left is Malachi, lying down is my foster Harvey, and on the right is Ursa. There is a second picture of Harvey by himself. Harvey is part chow, and part Samoyed. At least that is what people seem to think. This is an unapologeti...

Re: The “perfect” walk?

Laura I use a harness on both of them because they outweigh me together and it feels more secure. I also recommend a harness. That is what I always use in public. When Ursa was little, she would back up when on a walk and slip out of a collar. She could not slip out of the harness. Currently I am fo...

Re: 3.5 year old Chow, aggressive to strangers.

Socialization is a continuous process. When I can find work, it is usually out of town. My wife does not take the dogs out, so they stay at home. I have to take them out and socialize them when I get back in town. They get the idea that they are to protect the wife and the house against all intruder...

Re: 4 month old chow puppy pulls all the time on walks

Practice, practice, practice. My two are hyper when I first put the harnesses on them. They have to smell and mark everything in sight. It takes about 5 minutes for them to work this out and calm down. I have a foster, and he is worse. I have done the changing of directions with him, and the stop an...

Hang in there and work with them. I am fostering a chow Samoyed mix, and Maggie, our rat terrier, wants to eat him. Good thing he is mellow about it. Of course, the new dog has added a little stress to everyone, and Ursa wants to go at Malachi during feeding, so I have to be careful with them. I wis...

Hi y'all. I can't say about anyone else, but things change with my situation, and I quit visiting the site. I do miss the people and dogs. I will try to drop in more often. The old computer died, and I am just now getting this one loaded with all my stuff.

Re: New Member Fostering 2 year old Chow

LOL, plastic pipe must be a chow favorite. I have considerable amount of piping at my place, and Ursa thinks the drain pipes are toys. The good thing is that she can't dig them up, since they are 12-18" underground when installed, but I have to keep her away from them until they are buried. I a...

Re: Questions from a future Chow Chow Owner

I have two chows, both of which are rescues. One male, and one female. Both are fixed. They both get on quite well, although Ursa is a bit bossy. I live in South Mississippi, and used to live in Savannah GA. On a winter day, they are very lively, but let the weather warm up, and they will just lie a...

She has instantly attached herself to me and our daughter and will give a warning bark to people that come near us but once someone shows they mean no harm she is fine. She doesn't like to be away from me to the point that I almost cou...

Santa is no big deal for my two. It is focusing on the camera that is a problem. There are too many other things that are more interesting to look at. I have to be there by the camera with a treat if I want them to pay attention.

Every morning when I come downstairs, Malachi, who is outside with all the other dogs, comes up to the French doors and barks at me. I wave to let him know I heard him. First order of business is for me to get my cup of coffee, so he has to wait. I will put the coffee on the table with the newspaper...

Re: Chow doesnt like to go for the ball

My two don't really play with toys. Malachi used to bounce a small rubber ball on the floor and chase it, but then one day he decided to chew on it and swallow it, so no more small balls. He did throw it up the next day, saving us a big vet bill. They used to play with a rope and pull it, but they r...

Re: Get me out of here

I think it is cute, and I have fun with the pictures. I usually put a handful of cat kibbles in my shirt pocket because the dogs really like them as treats. I forgot this year, so getting my two to pose was a real challenge. Since I take my two out for socialization, the picture taking is just anoth...
