Re: What TOTW variant is best for chows

Thanks. I'm just being worried because at 14 months my Chow is just around 15.5Kg and as you may have said before that is a little bit on the slim side of Chows (maybe even on the underweight range). Considering that he is a male, can't I do anything about it or does it just really account for famil...

What TOTW variant is best for chows

I'm currently feeding Walter the High Prairie variant of TOTW and was reading through some posts in this forum that chows don't necessarily need a high protein diet. From all the TOTW dog variants, I know that the High Prairie has the most protein. Should I be switching to a new flavor? Which is bes...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Ok. Will the slicker brush be any good for daily maintenance also? It's what I'm using on Walter since I started this thread and has been working pretty good. Is there any way that the slicker brush will hurt him though? And how long does a daily maintenance go continuously for? Also, what's a high ...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

Walter is shedding right now and when I use the slicker brush it does get a ton of hair from Walter. Does that entail that that is dead hair? Should I continuously brush him until all the slicker brush doesn't pick up any hair anymore?

Re: Bed for chows

Hi Constantina, thanks for the update on this. Yeah, I figured that would be the case. Yes, Walter is an indoor dog as I live in a condo community. They won't get cold when the ac is on and they sleep on the floor, would they?

Re: When to stop puppy food variant

Ok. But if these are really two different variants, what is the disadvantage of feeding the adult kibble using the amount designed for the puppy kibble? More food would equate to more nutrients as well, right? And that would at least tie the adult food with the puppy food, no?

Re: When to stop puppy food variant

It seems that a few months back all of the TOTW variants are labeled as "For All Life Stages" which made it confusing because why produce a puppy variant of the same formula if everything (including the puppy variant) is advertised as "For All Life Stages". They modified that and...

Re: When to stop puppy food variant

This is what I exactly thought. It's just that the vets from TOTW recommended me to do this and I just followed. I'm actually not feeding him more than recommended just for the sake of reaching a target weight. I just want the volume that's best for him. Let me make it simpler and I'll give it out t...

Re: When to stop puppy food variant

Oh ok. Honestly, what I'm doing right now (as recommended by the manufacturer themselves) is to feed the adult variant to my dog but with amount (per day) that is equivalent to that of the puppy variant recommendation. This is because there is no puppy variant of TOTW available here in our country. ...

When to stop puppy food variant

When do I stop treating a dog as a puppy and switch him to the adult variant of his food? I'm reading conflicting answers to this but I just want to know your opinion on this matter.

Thanks.

Re: Bad behavior of Walter

Walter will be a year old this December 26 and I'm still having problems with play biting. The scenario's the same, he does it when he wants attention (say he wants to go outside to take a pee) and when he wants to play with you. The good thing is there is "inhibition" involved as he rever...

Re: How to use Walk'N rain dog head halter

Thanks Laura, I should've known better and just went ahead with the Easy Walk Harness the first time. Yes, that's actually my goal for Walter, to make him enjoy the surrounding. I walk him for at least thrice a day for 15 to 30 minutes each session. He tends to be very excited to go out. During the ...

Re: How to use Walk'N rain dog head halter

Ok, got it. Walter seems to do exactly that and it's not pleasing to the eyes. I would believe that he will be accustomed to it in the long run but it still seems "harsh" to him. I was just basing my judgement on reviews all over the net and most swear by the head halter although some also...

Re: How to use Walk'N rain dog head halter

It just looks like it closes his mouth? I bought a gentle leader easy walk harness for my two. ( nothing goes around their mouth/head) It works like a normal harness with the leash clip centered on their back/shoulder area or you can adjust it so that the leash clip area is on their chest. When it ...

Re: How to use Walk'N rain dog head halter

The Walk'N Train head halter is NOT a muzzle. I was under the assumption that most members here are familiar with the head collar/halter to correct dog pulling (no pun intended)? He definitely can pant properly with head collars. If you do a quick google search, I think that make you more easy to th...

Re: How to use Walk'N rain dog head halter

Yes I know, but I did account for that. The problem with the ones in Amazon is that it is advertised as Large but they will give you Extra Large. I did know that before buying so I made sure to buy a 3 (Large) and that's what I got. Actually, there's a sizing chart for this product and is based on t...

How to use Walk'N rain dog head halter

It seems that the Walk'N Train that I bought just doesn't work with Walter. I wear it on him before going out, I already did desensitization on him, but as soon as we go out he simply rubs it off with his paw. I'm not sure if it's because of the sizing but it does fit his snout well and the collar p...

Re: What brushes to use in grooming hair of Chows

@Rory's Dad Does that mean all black hair will be removed eventually since it is puppy hair anyway? Yes, you're right I do a lot of them in the head and tip of the tail. So I don't need to worry and the shaving that was done on him had probably no effect in the health of his hair, right? My dog's na...

Interesting. I don't trust any of the groomers here in my country. I have yet to find a groomer that is really considered a "professional".

Any thoughts on my other question above? The one pertaining to the black hairs.

Re: How to train Chow to not rely on food

When I train him, I try to alternate (in no repetitive interval) between giving him food and just simply praising him by petting his head or his chin. I do this every time I train him but when I try to do a test on him without pulling out food treats, I don't get positive responses from him. He does...

How to train Chow to not rely on food

I'm reading that the ultimate goal in training our Chows for obedience is to just rely on the voice command without any treats. Walter doesn't have any problems with treat training and with hand signals but when I remove either of the two, it seems that he doesn't obey. I'm not doing it abruptly as ...
