Re: New Puppy

Oh my, just 9 weeks old and already a little devil! :) Personally, I can't say believe in that sort of thing. It's a total trustbreaker, manhandling your dog! A Chow respects you for outwitting him, for using your brain not your strength. You want him to respect you because he loves you, not becaus...

Re: New Puppy

I certainly agree - he is just so darn cute! He still hasn't submitted... He will struggle a try to chew anything to get up. It's hard not to use pressure. Which brings me to another topic: mouthing. I do praise him for chewing on toys, but he still continues to chew on my arms or hands or, when he'...

Re: Need help. Are these foods healthy?

According to my breeder, chow chows are grazers. Puppies can eat as often as 10-15 times a day. I agree. However, if your Mochi is a puppy I don't necessarily agree with this (being as they usually always poop 20-40 minutes after eating food). My breeder also suggested feeding 1/4 of a can of wet fo...

The Life of Louie

I am new here, but I figured I'd start a thread in dedication of my little boy, Louie. Its tradition after all... I've done it with all of my lizards for the last 6 years, haha. They have a thread of their own on various reptile websites very similar to this one. Anyway, Louie was born July 26, 2012...

Re: TransFURmation time line for chow puppy to adult coat?

My breeder had told me that chows do not stop growing until they are apprx. 20 months old. They also stated that the adult coat will usually begging growing in around 6 months to 8 months until about a year to a year and a half in age. Of course climate also effects the rate of hair growth and coat ...

Re: Deer antler

My dogs love antlers (my 6 year old and my 9 week old). They are much safer than femur bones (I still use those too), and certainly a contrast to rawhide. We recommend them to all of our customers. I love the "soaking in chicken broth" idea if their ever bored of it. These antlers last for...

Re: New Puppy

I think that is my primary issue - calming down first. I'm a normally impatient person when it comes to negative behavior (whether dog or human), I'll admit. I try my best of course. When it comes down to it, I will need to work on myself. My fiance' is pretty calm himself already, but of course whe...

Re: New Puppy

Thank you for the quick reply! I've tried your method earlier this morning and I see what you mean with the patience of a puppy. Sucker didn't give in, even after about 6 minutes. Finally, internally, I gave up (mostly because I had to get to my 10:30 class). He was being way too hyper so I put him ...

New Puppy

Hello everyone, We are new to the site, as well as happy new puppy parents to our 9 week old, cream colored chow chow male, Louie. Its been a very busy first week! We had a couple of questions regarding training. I think that we may be mixing up behaviors of dominance and puppy, or maybe not? We und...
