Re: New Chow Chow owner - tips and advice anyone
I'm sorry that no-one bothered to come back to you with your questions, but indeed a lot of what you asked if not all is present in the forum, you just need to look for it. Let me know if you still have questions I promise to answer as fast as possible. I have been very busy in the last weeks, there...

Re: My two chow chow dogs are fighting badly
@tina find out what he really likes and make him "work"for that. Musashi seems to be a lot like Simba. His majesty only moves if it is worth it. Cheese and yoghurt are his favorite snacks, he give high five sits as long as it takes to get it. bones are not his thing except soft chicken bon...

Re: My two chow chow dogs are fighting badly
@ski absolutly right. Nature didn't design a breed as a stereotype for a certain set of behaviours, but human nature like to put things into drawers. Pittpulls are fighting, labradors are playful and chows are agressive. This is as much nonsense as all the labels we like to hang-on different human c...

Welcome Chief, you look still young. Seems you have been well taken care off.
Hope my guys will look that great in their older years too.

Absolutely cute.
Yes make sure they accept you as a leader and have keep them occupied. most dog fights erupt from boredom and too much frustrated energy.
If you also practise NILIF ( nothing in life is free) they will remain best friends.

Re: I need to know how to control my chow chow! help.
This is very normal at this age and will get better once the adult teeth are fully developed. Get him toys which are allowed for him to chew on. Kong for puppies is very good or any other clean high grade rubber toy. Clean untreated wood toys are good as well. ropes. whenever he starts using furnitu...

Re: My two chow chow dogs are fighting badly
besides physical exercise I'm letting them do mental exercises as well. Simba is very good in opening sliding doors, so I have him open the doors for everyone. Sometimes I keep on closing doors so he has a chance to open them again. Even mosquito screens are no major problem for him. Nala is very go...

@Tina
Amen! Exercise, Discipline... looks there are not to many of us, who are believing in this.
But it is a powerful "medicine" and it works exactly as you describe it.
Same litter, different mothers....nothing matters, if the guys have someone to look up to and something useful to do.

Re: Home-Grooming
I groom my Chows at home for the exact same reason. Chows are so called double coated dogs, they have have a thick wooly underfur and the long top fur which protects them from rain, snow etc. the underfur protects the skin from getting sun burned. You need to take care of both furs. The underfur requ...

Re: Help! Coda stopped eating...
Chows are very picky eaters, whay different from most other breads. Put her back on the old food, she will start eating again. It is very common that Chows are protesting against food change and are selective of what they eat. When Simba was a puppy I tried a lot of the recommended healthy snacks, h...

Congratulation,
I'm very curious to hear more about the royalties growing up together.
Rottweiler and Chows are different, but then not too different characters.
Keep us posted about their progress. If you need some support just ask.

Re: My two chow chow dogs are fighting badly
Interesting discussion. So far I have only seen Rory's Dad talking about discipline to avoid fights. As some of you may know I have three Chows and 7 dogs in total, but zero serious dog fights over the years. the pack is a mix of male and female, age 2 years to 14 years some are neutered or spayed a...

Re: Puzzle toys
Hi TyChowgirl, unfortunately I have no experience with puzzles for Chow, but I would love to see Simba doing those. He thought himself how to open sliding doors, and he developed some games for himself, like biting treats into pieces and then eating them starting with the smallest piece first. I wou...

Re: Please help! :(
First most important thing to do is for you to calm down. Your dog is picking up your emotions and behave more than strange because of that. If you can treat your poor Chow as if nothing happened that will help to get her back to her usual self. question 1 to 4 are all depending on your ability to s...

Re: Devastated
Most important now is, that he stays out of sunlight. The fur is his main protection against sun burn the skin is more sensitive than human skin to UV radiation. I would give supplements like fish oil or VCO (virgin coconut oil) to support the fur growth. Have him on tick and flea prevention like ad...

Re: Fearful Chow
sounds like a major problem. Sally my last rescue had a milder version of anxiety, being and outdoor dog and barking at perceived dangers. In our case my two other chows immediately adopted her and became role model. So she lost most of her anxiety in a couple of weeks and just followed them around ...

Re: Chows and tropical climates/Travelling with a Chow?
@Tess and me Moving from one place to another an living in a hot place with a Chow is okay. My Chows live in the tropics. with plenty of water, shady areas, cooling fans and if it's really hot (38 C and above) they join us during the day in an air conditioned area. If we have road-trips only in air-...

Re: Chows and tropical climates/Travelling with a Chow?
If you listen to yourself, you already gave an answer. How can 9 year old chow with arthritis follow you on a trip through Central America. Sounds also you're not planning to stay in one place for long, this would be torture for a relatively old dog. Only exception if you're planning to go on that t...

Re: New to adopting chows, not new to the breed!
I rescued a two to three year old Chow girl. You can read the story of Sally in my blogs. It wasn't very difficult to integrate her, I had to fast track the puppy training she never had. Walking on leash, NILF (nothing in life is free), potty training etc. I called her my adult puppy. But she is abs...

He is an adorable Pup.
He has all external features of a perfect Chow.
If he is a bit stubborn, intelligent, bit protective and not too easy with strangers, he is as Chow as it gets.
Take good care of him, Chows are special and deserve a caring home.
