Re: Chow Life changes
Are Chloe and Loki only taking tramadol? Shiloh has been on deramax for a long time. That was supposed to help her arthritis. I'm concerned about taking another pain med on top of another pain med. I guess I should ask her vet...I don't want to over medicate her with pills that are doing the same th...

Re: Chow Life changes
I haven't continued the extra tramadol meds for Shiloh. It's bad enough that I have to force two pills down her throat each day. At first we shortened Shiloh's walks but after some discussion we decided that Shiloh will let us know when the walks need to be shortened. She loves her walks so much so ...

Re: Run free, Mister Nahkohe
Hello Karin - yes, I will be glad to help if you find a local California Chow in need of adoption. We also have a number of senior cats besides Shiloh...sometimes we think-wow! are they really that old? Cats seem to handle it easier than our Chows...

Re: Run free, Mister Nahkohe
With Shiloh being a senior, we thought it would be good to introduce another dog into the pack before she crossed the Bridge. In July we found a post for a Chow mix - he had the major purple tongue. We took our GSD puppy to meet him and they were good together. We did the adoption and when we got ho...

Re: Chow Life changes
Last night Shiloh was in a "mood". We went to bed and she got me up with barking and pawing at the baby gate. This is her normal signal to let her out to go potty. She did her business and came back in...so I went back to bed...then 30 minutes later, more barking. I let her out and she wen...

Re: Chow Life changes
Shiloh's balance is becoming less stable and often goes down. This morning she went to do a little body shake and ended up going down...Jeff had to pick her back up so she could continue her walk. She loves her walks so much. She does a bouncing up and down on her front legs when she knows we are ge...

Dear Nahkohe...we still miss you so much but our newest rescue, Takoda, is making up with his nuisance barking - LOL! It's Christmas season now & the temps are in the 30s - your favorite. We have your candle lit every night and with the Christmas season I miss you even more because you are not h...

Re: Chow Life changes
Shiloh had what was probably a "hot spot" - first ever. The vet shaved her tail - very much like a lion's cut tail. I had to apply an ointment a couple of times a day. She is such a trooper! The hot spot is gone and there tail fur is slowly coming back. I don't know how she puts up with th...

Re: Chow Life changes
Our sweet Shiloh is getting a little slower but still loves her walkies. She is getting really picky about food but we give her what she wants because she doesn't eat very much. Her incontinence is becoming more of a problem. We are putting pee pads out in the indoor areas that she likes to sleep. T...

Re: Will Pooh Bear grow up to be mean? Please help
What is the circumstance for PB biting you? Are you playing with him? With my Chowboy, I thought it was kinda cute how he would play with me and "mouth" me. Per this site, I realized this was not a good thing so I switched from it being okay to the squealing thing and/or walking away from ...

Re: what's best for Buddy2?
A beagle or Aussie might be too much IMO. It might be better to find another Chow Chow or another less active dog. It would be in the best interest of both. When my Chowboy went to Rainbow Bridge, we got a GSD mix puppy. My senior Chowgirl didn't know what to do with the boy's energy. My GSD puppy l...

A year ago today, Nahkohe crossed the bridge... This is one of my favorite pictures of him: http://i1065.photobucket.com/albums/u389/kingalls/Nahkohe/Mr%20Nahkohe_J.jpg ...sure do miss that Chowboy! I miss his special Chow Chow smell. I hug & smell Shiloh but her scent is a little different but ...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
When Walter pulls, stop the walk. If he pulls again when you restart the walk, stop the walk. He needs to know that if he pulls, the walk stops - period! Nahkohe's legs would quiver because he wanted to pull but understood that the walk would stop if he pulled again.

We don't have experience with the fake lawn thing but mentioned it in case it might help you. As for doing the squeal thing, I would just do the loud squeal and walk away. No way would I show fear - just that I was done with that "play" and was not going to let that happen again. I've neve...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
Either online or a good pet supply place have the fake lawn for dogs to use for their "business" when indoors. I'm not sure if they are big enough for a Chow. My first Chow seemed to come already trained - I barely remember how she figured out to bark when she needed to be let outside. Cho...

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
Hi, 1. Harness/Collar: The harness basically tells the Chow he can drag or pull you. Use the collar. Is it a flat or rolled collar? The rolled is better for a rough coat. When on your walk, if Walter starts to pull, stop the walk. My Nahkohe was always trying to pull/run. I would stop the walk and w...
