Re: newbie chow owner

It's always sad when we lose a fur child but we can always delight in the memories of the special ways they had to enter our heart and bring smiles to our faces.

Welcome to the chow-chow world! Any pics of your Doppler? We luv pics! :x

Re: New owner - thanks for your advice!

Hugo is sooooooooo hugably cute! Sheena needs a little help getting up sometimes. However, there are times at the park where she has decided she isn't leaving and I will say..."Up Sheena Up" and try lifting her up...but she is dead weight and won't budge. So I usually need to wait until sh...

Re: New owner - thanks for your advice!

Sheena at 11 years old began to pant heavily...vet stated that as they age their lungs become less elastic and don't expand as easily so they pant more. However, I did notice that when she was younger she hardly panted when it was 75 F degrees or lower. Now the temperature needs to be around 70 F de...

Re: Is your chow afraid of water?

Water? HELP! My slavemaster is killing me! Arooooo Arooooo...That's Sheena's reaction to bathing as her nails are digging into my arm! It's so bad that in the doggie wash place where I bathe her (very, very infrequently I must add) two people freaked out and walked out with their wet dogs instead of...

Re: Sheena's Oral Melanoma-No Metastasis! YAY

Sheena is doing well. Unfortunately, I cannot see the base of her tongue because the lump was too far in the back of her tongue so I would need to anesthesize her in order to check her tongue. But she is eating normally and has a good appetite and is back to her normal self-demanding chow that she i...

Re: Muzzle to fit a chow securely

Yes, Troy de Bad Boy, tried and tried but when I wrapped the strap around his collar and made it very snug he couldn't get the soft guard muzzle off although he would end up damaging it some. But eventually he got used to it and realized he could bark, yelp and pant and would just shove the muzzle s...

Re: Muzzle to fit a chow securely

I know...no nylon or mesh but all I've tried is "Soft Guard" muzzles which are pretty humane and worked well. I used the green large size and it was a little longer in the snout but it fit OK although I needed to take the only one strap it had and wind it around a neck collar before snappi...

Re: Is my vet for real?

What happened today may be a blessing in disguise. Once a vet office classifies chow-chows with ALL dogs. I would not take my chow back to them. Apparently, they don't have enough experience or knowledge about chows and anesthesias. What maikinda says is true. But it appears to me that the vet is in...

Re: Dakota is having eye surgery :'( advice please

My Sheena had entropion surgery in both eyes at 3.5 years. ONLY Isofluorane gas was used, No injectable anesthesia. Reason-once you have administered the injection there is nothing the vet can do to save your chow if a reaction develops. With gas only, if a negative reaction begins to occur they can...

Queen Sheena, Sheena Weena, Cushie Cush and Ms. Demanding Poochie, the latter of which is when she barks and demands to come in, go out, come in, go out, come in, go out...and also when she prefers me to help her get her tushie up instead of using her own power, which she can, it just takes longer a...

Re: Please help on my chow's diet

If you allow your chow to eat/drink excessively and quickly they will swallow air which will produce gas. There are other causes as well. Read not only the causes but the prevention of. http://www.globalspan.net/bloat.htm Just a note: Most dogs I've read about who died of bloat ate dry kibble as the...

Re: Sheena's Oral Melanoma-No Metastasis! YAY

So sorry to hear that Rossi has malignant melanoma...but thank goodness it is lingual (tongue melanoma) which is the slower growing melanoma. Sheena's melanoma was way back at the base of the tongue. It's lucky that you can see Rossi's. Sheena is in great health right now; still has hind leg weaknes...

Re: Jazz needs good thoughts and prayers....

So glad Jazz pulled through and is home.

This would be the first I've heard of a chow being allergic to Isofluorane gas or did the vet use something else such as an injectable anesthesia, which you can't control like the gas?

Yes, my Sheena at 12.5 years doesn't jump like a rabbit anymore when I come home. Could be a severe skin allergy. Here's a website, go online, check pictures to find one that may be similar to your chow's crusts. Do research before going to vet. Food, environment, chemicals used in household can all affect a chow's health condition. At the worst it could be melanoma...however, my...

Re: Brown Vaginal Discharge

My Sheena has a strong smelling female area as well which started at about 7 years old. She was spayed at 3.5 years, the age I found her. Sheena has never been able to reach her privates to clean them. That's when I began cleaning her privates with a warm wet paper towel and rubbed the area well. Sh...
