Re: Chowchow can't climb up the stairs
I would start just leaving him downstairs unless you're strong enough to carry a 60-80 dog up and down those stairs. Still too dangerous in ly personal opinion.akithelionchow wrote:That's what we figured, so we just carry him up and down the stairs.

I'm so torn....
I was browsing CL (looking to buy a bigger crate for Dixie off of someone for cheap) and I happened upon a poor chow mix that someone is just GIVING away.... He looks so sweet and like he just wants to play and be loved on, but these people keep him outside on a short chain, tied to his dog house......

Re: Chowchow can't climb up the stairs
My girlfriend's house has a spiral staircase, with dimensions similar to this one. http://www.mustknowhow.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/vic_spiral_staircases_01.jpg My question here is that can a Chow Chow climb up and down those stairs? I wouldn't want my dogs going up and down that staircase. To...

Definitely bile that your pup threw up. My dogs throw up bile every once in a while when their stomachs are empty for and extended period of time (sometimes they just won't eat) but usually they'll eat right after and will be fine.

Re: Chow position when lying down
My purebred girl never did it. My mix boy did it as a puppy and my mix girl still does it. My pom even does it. Many people call it "frog dog". However, I don't think it's associated with the straight back legs. I've seen labs, goldens, schnauzers, poms, and other breeds doing it.

The one on the left looks a lot like a samoyed/chow mix in my opinion and the one on the right looks like a cream chow.jada89 wrote:could someone be kind enough to identify these dogs for me? are they samoyeds or chow chows???

Re: Should I shave my chow?
Don't shave him. I just got in a huge argument with my dad because he went behind my back and shaved my mix boy, Jasper. Just continue to brush your pup everyday or every other day. It helps to allow air flow through his coat to keep him cool. His coat will trap cool air near his skin and keep the su...

He is still really cute. He's got a puppy look about him. But I am quite furious with my dad and I'm currently not speaking to him.... But you bet he'll probably get an ear full. Oh, Jess. I'm so sorry and after you worked so hard to get his skin all cleaned up and his coat back in shape. He i...

You should get a large can of Mace in a holster, like Dog the Bounty hunter has. Good thing the Nut case did not try to grab Todd away from you and hurt him. :-x I actually have a thing of pepper spray, but it was clipped on my bag.... But she tried to grab him... I just moved away fast e...

I'm kinda upset....
I took an overnight trip to one of my friend's houses with Dixie last night (came home after the park incident to drop the boys off and pack a bag). Well, I came home today to find that my dad had SHAVED Jazz! I'm kinda upset that they went behind my back and did it.... But I gotta be honest...

Their idiocy never ceases to amaze me anymore... I took Jazz, Dixie, and Todd with me to meet up the park to meet up with a few friends of mine (Emily D., Brandy, Chelsea, Korey and his sister, Emily E.) and their dogs (Samson, Tyrion, and Bear). We were all having a good time just hangin' out in th...

Jasper developed allergies to chicken and beef around the time he was a year and a half old. We switched him to TOTW and haven't looked back since. He was on the Wetlands Formula, but they started adding chicken into it and made his allergies flare up, but now he's on the Sierra Mountain formula.

Tippsy started to lose her sight as she aged. If she had lived longer than her 10 1/2 years, I have no doubt she would've lost her sight completely. She'd also started losing her hearing.

Wow. I saw the other post before this one, which pretended to be quite innocent and asked questions about the DNA testing. After seeing this one, it is quite obvious that you're quite aware of the history of your dog and are in fact trying to profit from a known genetic defect. Rest assured that yo...

Re: Is Your Chow Like This?
My last purebred chow, Tippsy, didn't care what I did around her while she was eating or drinking. She even let one of our cats eat right out from under her without any issues. Dixie doesn't care what I do around her either. Jasper however, use to be VERY food aggressive... Probably still is.... I w...

Re: Blue Merle Chow Chow
Welcome. Your pup is adorable. However, blue merle is not a color chows are supposed to come it. To my knowledge, it has to be bred in by mixing a breed that does carry it into chows. Which is very well likely, even though the DNA test came back purebred, if it was far enough back. Chow chows only c...

Re: Please don't ask what type of dog he is...
I was never ashamed to be asked what breed Tippsy was. Yes, people wanted one because they're cute, but I went into the whole shpiel about chows and made a point of stating they're not a breed for everyone and people need to do research. However, all too often I'm met with negative comments about ch...

Re: Keeping his paws clean
1.) Do not confine your pup away in a room by himself all the time. THAT is a good way to make your dog unsocialized and aggressive. Let him out in the house with you. He WANTS to be with you, don't deprive him of that. 2.) He poops and pees all over the room because that's what you've given him. Yo...

Re: Chow keeps biting
He's a puppy and it's normal because he hasn't been taught any better. He won't "grow out of it". You have to teach him that he's not supposed to bite/nip. First, I'd try a high pitched "ow" or yelp when he bites/nips. If this doesn't work, try a time out. Time outs worked wonder...

Re: It's taken a year...[boys vrs girls]
I have a preference to females (shhh don't tell Jasper and Todd that  ). There's no real reason, other than I just simply don't like cleaning boy parts. Plus, every male dog I've ever owned has always peed on their own front legs when they hike their leg... I wouldn't choose a puppy by ge...

Re: does my chow have separation anxiety?
Could be separation anxiety... Could be boredom... To me, sounds more like boredom. Have you tried a Kong? I stuff my guys' kongs with peanut butter and freeze them, and then give them to them whenever I leave. Takes them a while to get all the peanut butter out and it makes them tired physically an...

What a stupid woman....
I've had a chow and chow mixes with pomeranians (4), a yorkie, a chihuahua, a min pin, a poodle, a schnauzer, a boxer, a beagle, and a pitbull mix and have never EVER had a problem with them being together. This woman is simply being ignorant.

Re: Pros and cons of getting a second chow?
I'm gonna be honest; it's awesome having 2. BUT I would NEVER have 2 puppies at once. Double everything 1 puppy needs (food, water, training, vet care/cost, grooming, flea/tick preventative, heartworm prevention, etc.) and I KNOW I'd be overwhelmed. I personally choose to put about a year or 2 betwe...

Re: What type of Collar works best for you Chow?
This is the martingale that Dixie has. I chose this over the ones with the quick release buckle because she's broken so many quick releases. I don't mind having to adjust it a little everytime I put it on and take it off. Knowing she's secure and can't get loose makes it worth it. http://i1255.photo...
