Re: How to remove ticks and fleas
Advocate from Bayer is doing a better job than frontline. Make sure your getting the right dose acc. to the weight of your Chow. Frontline as well as Advocate have to be given monthly, every ! month. If the Chow is already infested it can take two to three month before all ticks and flees are dead a...

Re: My chow's behaviour / training
Please search for "chow and cats" in this forum. A lot has been said already about it in quite some blogs. It seems to be Chow dependent if a relationship between Cat and Chow can be established. I wasn't able to achieve that with my Chows and our Persian Cat. We needed to divide the house...

Re: fur falling out
Louise,
you need to see a Vet.
Those are either so called hot-spots, caused by allergies or ticks and flees.
It also can be mange which is much worse as is it caused by mites and needs immediate treatment.
Red spots, scratching and loosing fur together is not seasonal or normal

Re: Sally's progress
Last update within this blog.
Sally has been officially declared healthy by the vet.
No more special soaps, bath, oils etc.
She is fully integrated into the pack and nothing really shows how sick she has been.
will post a few latest pictures soon.

Re: Am I being too sensitive?
As everyone said, you did the absolute right thing to let go of this guy. He apparently never worked with Chows and even for other breeds his advise his highly doubtful. The method of using direct contact to achieve behavioral change is called "positive punishment" ,because you're adding s...

Re: Is our chow underweight?
Chows have a large range of varieties. With 18 pounds at four months, she is definitely not belonging to the large Chow variety. As long as she is healthy, active and get's proper food ( amount an quality) she is fine. If you feel her rib cage, the ribs should "stick out under the skin" bu...

Re: Very young puppy - house-training
Sounds very good, congratulation you're doing the right things. Nipping at that age is absolutely normal and he will grow out of it. Keep being a calm assertive and your pup will be most loyal companion you can imagine. It is us humans who create dog monsters, no puppy is born aggressive, fearfull o...

Re: Blow dryer
Simba learned the blow dryer in a similar way. I had it out first but switched off and later running while we were doing the towel drying. He got used to it slowly, I avoided forcing him to take the blow dryer but every time he showered I insisted that it was around then that it was on and finally I...

I'm happy that the girl finally get's into a home that takes care of her.
Good luck with the socialization, I always found it very rewarding to support dogs in need.

@P.R.Bear thanks I have examined the lids several times and so far couldn't see anything unusal. When I brought him to vet last time they treated him for infection and the tearing became much less. We're now three weeks without medication and the wet area around the eye has become large again. All I...

Re: Fearful Chow
to reverse fear in dogs requires patience and dedication. you need to find out what triggers the fear and show your four legged friend that being afraid is unnecessary. But as always, dogs are slow learners, so it wil require many attempts before change happens. It is best if you can combine the fea...

How long are they with you and since when have they refused to eat ? If they are very new to your home, they might be still not comfortable with the new place. What kind of food are you offering, is the same they got from their breeder ? They need to get same food than as they got before they came t...

Thanks I'm in the Boston area in the coming week, I will see if I get the remedy there. There is still no issue for Simba but it bothers me a lot to see the area around his eye soaked in tears.
Will definitely try your recommendation.

Re: My dog, Mimi bit my dad and now he seems hostile against
Hi Cam, i don't want to challenge you, but advising someone, who was bitten and has decided not to want that dog anymore in the house, to hold a stick when being approached by the perceived aggressive dog can escalate the situation easily. I hope you don't see it as too creepy when I reiterate that ...

Re: Training my Duce to not use the bathroom in the house
Whenever he wakes up from sleeping, a few minutes after meals and when he keeps his nose down on the floor while walking in circles seemingly looking for something. Sooner than later he should start showing you that he wants to go out for potty. Bring some treats and praise him when he is doing his ...

Re: Very young puppy - house-training
we don't have any puppy classes or dog parks in the Philippines either. Surely not a perfect way to grow up without siblings and dog mom, but on the other hand being malnourished or even maltreated is way worse. Reyna (my four weeks rescue girl) is now in her 14th year, she has a bit arthritis now, ...

Re: Training my Duce to not use the bathroom in the house
He should be ready for that already. Last thing before he sleeps is potty walk and immediately in the morning. He can hold for 8 hours now, specially if he has fixed sleeping place. There can be a few lapses, but in general no more pads needed for a 13 week old Chow. If you don't feel comfortable ke...

My first rescue girl was also four weeks old. For the first two months i just praised good behavior and re-directed bad. No obedience training at all. Just play, and sleep and whenever something nice happened I praised her. We had her in a part of the house where she could not damage anything and th...

Re: Sushi will not stop biting!
Agree with Cocoa, luckily Simba was not as persistent as Sushi and his nipping stayed at acceptable level most of the time. But he didn't stop with what he was doing no matter how much we tried to redirect his attention. Only way to stop him was exactly how Cocoa described it, got a hold of him make...

Hi Kingalis,
can you tell me the brand of thedehydrator. Will see if I can find something similar in Manila.
Good treats are rather seldom here and quite expensive, making jerky seems a nice alternative.

alright , that's not ususal anymore. It is indeed time to see the vet. somthing has upset the stomache which seems to be still present, the vet needs to find out what it is. Important is that she drinks water, and poops and pees normal, if anything else changes besides the vomiting the trip to the v...
