Re: Crazy Dog People?

I've not taken my 16 week pup to a dog park yet, but I do remember similar dramas with my first Chow many years ago. I don't doubt crazy dog people are still around. My plan is to observe the dogs & owners before entering a dog park. That won't always reveal the crazies and won't prevent crazies...

Re: 4 month old chow puppy pulls all the time on walks

My pup is a similar age. He will pull when something really interests him and does want to sniff each person we pass, but he's not a jumper. I think the training videos you mention usually use a high-level treat to get the pups attention. My pup now responds to "uh-uh" as a warning to stop...

Re: Chow Chow Valentine's Day Wish

...her dream is to be in a room full of chow chow puppies and have them all over her. First, that's a pretty cool idea for a Valentine's Day present! I'd second the breeder-visit suggestion. Adult Chows aren't as likely to be "all over her"...unless she was covered with peanut butter or t...

Re: Food for a chow

My pup is now 16 weeks old and I've been feeding him TOTW Puppy kibble (salmon) for the past 8 weeks. It's the one I chose after researching on this forum and elsewhere. It's rated 4.5 of 5 stars and is relatively affordable at ~$1.50/lbs. Beneful is pretty bad, but I'm not sure it has much to do wi...

Re: Smoothy with No Name

16 weeks old yesterday; didn't get a chance to weigh him. He picked up something from puppy play group or during a walk and has a runny nose. The main symptom is licking his nose frequently, usually after waking up. But his energy level remains normal and appetite has ramped up. He still prefers to ...

Re: Extremely hyper chow

The first thing to try would be to provide more exercise than he's already getting. Chows, like all dogs, have varying degrees of activity needs. My first Chow was not nearly as active as my current pup. I suspect those needs will change as the pup grows up. It took me a few days to figure out that ...

Re: Lululemon, 17 weeks

I read the following recently, but didn't keep notes on sources so you'll want to confirm with another source. Wolf and wild dog moms supposedly eat their pups' poops when they're still too tiny to leave the den. This is her way of keeping their home clean. I don't know what breeders do, but if they...

Re: The “perfect” walk?

...I finally tried the prong collar (after being taught how to properly use it... I used one with my first Chow (it worked!), but am almost certain that we can avoid using it with this pup. It's uncertain how much is due to temperament or training, but this little guy just doesn't seem to pull near...

Re: Lululemon, 17 weeks

Welcome to the forum. It is generally not a good idea to become angry with a puppy, especially a Chow. In this particular instance, she is not being defiant. Don't take her actions personally. She is a baby dog and you need to patiently teach her what is and is not appropriate in a human family/pack...

Re: 3.5 year old Chow, aggressive to strangers.

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. I'll just repeat that you take it in small steps, which it sounds like you're doing with your roommate. I would, however, suggest you intensively research the cone/muzzle route before taking it. I've never seen such a setup, but it sounds like it would look very off-putt...

Re: Puppy training

This falls under the "Unwanted behavior” heading: • Play bark/hyperactive state when tired and ready for sleep. I’m not sure if this was the best method, but I stood tall with my hands on my hips and exuded as much displeasure as I could while firmly saying “No!”. The first time I did this he ...

Re: The “perfect” walk?

The whole heel thing is not that important to me, as long as she isn't pulling I don't really care if she wants to wander and sniff a bit. Walks around here are solely for Shug and Chloe's enjoyment so they are allowed to sniff and explore. This doesn't mean that I let them drag me around, it just ...

Re: 3.5 year old Chow, aggressive to strangers.

My main issue with him is getting him socialized with people, he has bitten a few people with no serious injury thank god. Any aggressive behaviour I immediately act on it and pin him until he stops resisting. I was doing obedience classes with him with a very good trainer, and we had some progress...

Re: The “perfect” walk?

Although I could physically handle a puller (even an adult), I prefer to train him to be more aware & mindful of the human on the other end of the leash. Eventually other family members will also be walking him. I’ve already bought an easy-walk harness with the leash attachment ring on the front...

Re: Smoothy with No Name

15 weeks old today and weighs over 26 lbs. He completed his vaccination series so we've started taking walks around the neighborhood. At first he was very tentative and tended to huff at any noise, people or suspicious looking trees/doors/garbage cans/etc. But he quickly became more confident and no...

I want to try to stop this behavior before it gets worse. Absolutely! Can you think of anything that may have changed in the past few days from his viewpoint? I know it's hard to ignore whining, but I think you must. I had to catch him (sometimes I do this as it gets late and he thinks we are playi...

Re: Is she the right weight for her age?

There is a huge range of weight for Chows. Females are generally (not always) smaller than males. Chows seem to take more time (up to 2-3 years?) to fully mature. My male pup is 15 weeks old today and weighs ~26 lbs. (nearly 12 kilos) and I think he's growing up too fast. :) I wouldn't worry about t...

Re: Need Help

Welcome to the world of Chows! Others with much more experience will chime in, but here are my initial thoughts. I've read on one of these forum topics that you can't play with her in a sense that she is play biting. (P.S she's teething) Pups bite/nip/mouth because that's how they would interact wit...

The “perfect” walk?

My puppy completed his vaccination series last week and is now able to go for walks. This morning I prepared high-value treats with the intent to keep his attention on me as walk leader. But once we went out the gate, he was focused solely on new scents. I could lure him with a treat, but then it wa...

I went with Taste of the Wild puppy grain-free kibble with salmon as the main ingredient. He's nearly 15 weeks old and all seems well. For now I plan to stick with the same kibble for his first year. I do mix in a variety of bits (treat crumbs, scrambled eggs, chicken/turkey remnants, etc.) in very ...

Re: Is it common for Chows to itch a lot?

Skin issues are common in Chows. There are many possible reasons and it's often difficult to isolate the primary cause. Aside from obvious things like flea/insect bites (a single bite could cause itching for some time) and foxtail/burrs, the most common causes seem to be allergy related. Did the vet...

The official color designation is blue. Search "blue Chow Chow" and you'll find plenty of info. I'm pretty sure it's not rare.

Re: Our chow Bear!

As I understand it, cinnamon is the term used in the U.S. and fawn in the U.K. for the same color. Although there are 5 official colors (black, blue, red, cinnamon/fawn & cream), there's also variation within each color. A light shaded-red might look very close to a dark cinnamon. I get the impr...
