Re: TICKS - Pre-treating your yard
Vicki,
This little tip came from a "fella" who likes his yard alot and he's out there every weekend! Might even get rid of chiggers - you never know!

TICKS - Pre-treating your yard
Here's a tip for those of you heading into summer and who have issues with fleas and ticks in their yards... Using a regular Miracle Grow Garden Sprayer or similar, fill it with Hartz Flea and Tick Shampoo (Wal-Mart – it’s Green) and about an ounce of Bleach. Then spray your yard every weekend in th...

RARE Chow Book
Dear All, I am posting this to the Chow lists to which I belong and to some individual Chow folk I know, who aren't on the lists... I am often in the market for rare, out-of-print books from a variety of genre; and one of the ones I've been searching for is Chi Chi the Chow Chow - believe it is a st...

Re: Any way to tell?
Over here in our country, its tough to see the parents, not even to mention the grandparents. Then I would definitely be asking to see pictures. When it comes to owning Chowlings here, I guess its more or less like a bet unless we are buyin from reputable breeders. You should only ever purchase a p...

Re: Any way to tell?
You should always see the parents whenever possible. But it is also advisable, where possible to see or at least see the pictures of the grandparents and even the great grandparents. I personally breed for a more moderate head, but I occasionally throw a pup with a heavy head - the heavy heads in my...

Re: Any way to tell?
Actually, a look at the grandparents is a better predictor. If the parents are both heavy but have a fair amount of open faced Chows in their pedigree, there's no telling except at birth.if both parents have a closed face then more then likely the pups will too and vice versa...

Re: Full Grown? Really??
While I concur with Kiwani on this, I have to say that I personally don't consider a Chow "full-grown" until they are about 18 months of age. Generally by 11 months, they have reached their "adult" height; however, they will continue to add weight via muscle and bone for another ...

Re: Help! Husband doesn't want another dog...
pfordeb, Grief is really a profound journey of emotions and can be excrutiatingly dibilitating if one is "unprepared" for it and/or unwilling to engage with it. I am fortunate in that both my parents were founders of and very active workers in the hospice movement - starting in the late 60...

Re: 11 Years and Five Dogs Later.....
Sean, Now that you have your new deck, to further save your back, consider getting yourself a hydrobath (saves water and time and does an amazing job), a turbo dryer (saves time and does a fantastic job) and a grooming table (saves your back). Personally, I can't imagine life without them. Go to htt...

Re: Help! Husband doesn't want another dog...
This is for those of you with a spouse/partner grieving for a dog that has passed and refusing to get another dog... My husband, who is a delightful, kind and generous being, said pretty much the same thing to me when we lost our old girl some 18 years ago - she was 17.5 at the time. Although he cam...

Re: Any way to tell?
Not if the pup is over 8 weeks of age... you will have to wait. However, if you can get a picture of the pup, side on, at under 24 hours of age, that's the approximate sillohette that the pup will eventually evolve into (with upright ears) at about 3 years.

Re: A Not So Proud Moment
My Chows are socialised beyond an inch of their lives because they are all either active or retired show dogs. However, there is are cardinal rules about petting strange Chows (I don't unless the Chow asks): First, ignore the dog until it comes to you (you already know that one). Second, strange hum...

Re: a third??
Janet, I have seven Chows - yep, 7 - all live in the house and all get along reasonably well - each came in as a puppy (most were born here) and were thus raised by the others. I personally think we tipped over some line at the seventh. When one goes away to a show or the male goes to visit his brot...

Re: What's the difference?
a lot of them feel that the show rings have gotten very political. Many breeders are hating the way many breeds are being downsized for the show ring Interesting. A number of us regularly (well every few years or so) make the trek to the US to the Chow Nationals. We tend to see different dogs from ...

Re: I am concerned
Betty, I am extremely conservative when it comes to vaccines. My puppies get ONE C-3 shot at the age of 10 weeks and ONE more at the age of 15 months and THAT'S IT for life. Ziggy may not be as healthy as you would have wanted when he got the injection; but assuming that he had been weaned for over ...

Re: breeding a male chow
If you intend to pursue breeding in a responsible manner, then you should ensure that the male has been fully health cleared prior to mating and have the documentation to go along with it. He must be a minimum of two years of age, assuming you are in the United States, to have the first two tests ru...

Does anyone know if there are any health, personality or size differences between smooth coat and rough coat chows? No to health No to size It is said that Smoothies are a bit more playful that roughs, but not that I can tell; however, I don't presently have any smoothies. The difference is that yo...

Robyn, If you know the names of Stephanie's previous owners, you could try 1. Ringing them again and asking them if they remember/have any idea what her "registered" name is (this will be the name under which she was registered by her breeder) - if you can get this, I can tell you who her ...
