Re: New Chow Owner With Questions!
Definitely a mix. The nose is OK as an older style, more traditional Chow, but the ears are oversized for a Chow. Regardless, congrats on her she is a nice looking dog. And kudos to you for the rescue. She will appreciate you. As a Chow mix or so, she will want to become bonded and loyal to you. You...

Re: Help with getting two chow chows!
If you have to ask, then I would say its a bad idea. I too, question the part time issue. Not sure what that means, but it doesn't sound ideal on any level. Nobody died, and nobody got hurt is not an answer. Roughed up and scared isn't even an acceptable result. If you absolutely feel you are ready ...

Re: TED Socialisation
Keep doing what you are doing. The tail wag is a good sign. He is just being cautious. Encourage him when he meets new people. Tell him they are OK. Make sure they approach him in the correct manner. No sneaking up on him. Straight on from the front, and no hovering.

Re: Introducing Fifi...who jumps on bed every night!
I think you have a couple of different issues there... 1st off, stop threatening her with the water bottle. You won't win a battle of will with a Chow, especially if one of you is going to reward her with affection immediately after. That extra energy after her 'potty time' is perfectly normal. I wo...

Re: tips on crate training
I agree 612. And I too have very specific reasons for my dogs to be comfortable with crate training. Certainly for shows and for travel. My girl, Amber, has never been comfortable in the crate. And for that reason, we never force it on her. And then she stays home when we travel and complains vigoro...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
Spartacus looks great 612. I think he will do fine if you can get some shows with decent entries. It will be tough to get him wins over Brutus if its only the 2 of them as CH dogs will tend to get the win in the BOB competitions. Judges are hard pressed to award wins out of the classes over a CH unl...

Re: Cage Size
The crate size looks fine. Generally for a Chow, you should be looking at a 36" length with 24" height. He looks to be laying comfortably and not having to duck too much while standing. I do prefer a crate that has the solid bottom though. In the pictures he is standing on the grates, with...

Re: Is my Chow Chow Full Bred?
Almond shaped eyes, triangular ears, and heavy rounded paws. I would say yes, she is pure Chow. Muzzle is also correct. I would like to see photo of the tail set, but I would still say yes. And at her age, the mouth may not have full black/purple color. That could come in later and is not a sign tha...

Re: HELP CHOW GOING BALD
I had to look it up since I move all my grooming products to spray bottles. The one is used I got from Petco. It's the Well & Good Oatmeal Medicated Spray. On the website, the have it for $7.00
Pretty sure that's a Petco brand, so I would think that similar products would do fine.

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
Lol, 612, I agree. I never would have entered them both. I thought I had my daughter to help out, but she got scheduled to work at the last minute. Nothing we could do about it then. I was set to pull one of the dogs, but that would have broken the points for Select. And yes, having Tony around is g...

Re: HELP CHOW GOING BALD
I have a female Chow that is just about 3 years old. She has never held fur well and pulls/chews at herself quite a bit. I recently used a medicated oatmeal spray on my 2 year old male for a hotspot. It worked great, so I tried it on the female. So far, so good. Her hip fur is growing in nicely, and...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
Feedback is great...most of the time. I only do Judge photos now when its a moment. Rory is only 6 pts shy for his GCH, so I will do one when that moment comes. Need to build 2 majors for him now, which is not easy for the males right now...seems like girls everywhere just no boys. I need 6 entries ...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
You definitely have those wishes of good luck. Toby took his 1st GCH point today. Feedback from the judge, and it came down to Rory's crooked tooth for the Select decision. That has always been is fault, so I respect that as the deciding factor. Since it came down to a face off between my own two do...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
He looks great. Is that a judge inspecting his bite? I thought they were all but done doing it themselves. Yes, his front is a bit forward, but I love that his tail is up and (mostly) drawn left. That is what the judge sees, so that is nice. He really is nice and square. The forward leg throws that ...

Re: chow chow and its smell
Even though this is an old post with a recent bump, I would have to say that the riskiest area for a stinky chow is definitely the bib area. If you have a sloppy drinker that area can stay moist. I have even heard of cases where it becomes moldy. Keep a towel on hand to try and dry the chin. An old ...

Re: 12 weeks old, suddenly peeing
Sounds more like marking rather than accidental peeing. Most won't see any difference, as its really the same thing, except for intention. I do have a male who is very well trained, but will mark anything that is left lying on the floor. It's just his way. He has no interest in blankets or doggy bed...

Re: Has anyone ever purchased a Chow from RHR Chow Chow?
Have to agree with Laura. Not liking the facility or the kennel situation. The location of the breeder is also notorious for mills. One of their 'breeding mission' statements also doesn't ring true...they claim to breed for a square build with stocky legs, but none of the pictured dogs represent tha...

Re: Dog is HYPER-active, doesn't respond outside
Great post Apple. I think a lot of people will find it helpful, not just the original poster. It really shows that Chows are very much individuals. Even I was a bit guilty of generalizing, but it really shouldn't be done. The importance of an experienced and honest breeder is the 2nd big point. In m...
