Re: Armadillo

Armadillos are mammals and therefore have hair. From what I have observed while driving past road kill, most of the hair appears to be on the underside. As far as disease, armadillos can carry leprosy, and have been used in research for a vaccine. You can use the search engines to find all kinds of ...

Re: Natural Born Killer

We have armadillos down here. They stay out in the swamp by the house. I have not seen them, but they dig little triangular holes in the yard looking for grubs. Every once in a while at night, Malachi will bark at something and want to go out in the back yard. I have not seen any of their digging in...

Re: FREAKING OUT!!!

Two years ago, I had problems with "hot spots" on my male. He would get an irritation somewhere, then lick and chew on it, making it worse. I was living in Savannah at the time, and the dogs were not clipped. I am now in south Mississippi, and my wife has had both the dogs clipped fairly s...

Re: chow behavior in other animals

I will see if I can take more pictures of everyone. The problem is that every time I get the camera, everyone moves. Yoda and Ursa will sleep together on the mat upstairs by the bed. The chows will get into a dominance thing at feeding time if one finishes first and the other wants more, but the cat...

chow behavior in other animals

Today, my mother-in-law came over with her poodle. Yoda was out in the yard and rushed the poodle. The poodle recognized that she was in someone territory and retreated. What I found unusual about this is that Yoda is not a chow, but was raised by my two chows from 4 weeks of age. They spotted Yoda ...

Re: WHAT A SCARE!

Before I got my chows, we had a husky. She would not come when called and was smart enough to slip through an electric fence (cattle type three wire fence, all wires hot) We were never able to train her to come, and it wasn't until she was too old to run that she would stay near by. Ursa will stay a...

ursa and malachi

I think I correctly loaded the photo. I saw the tee shirt and knew I had to make this photo. Ursa is the one wearing the shirt, and Malachi is on the right.

Re: UGH!

A Yorkie....My wife has a Yorkiepoo, and my son has a rat terrier. Ursa has nipped both of them, which ended up costing me $300 in vet bills because of infections, but the Yorkie did learn not to get mouthy in front of Ursa. The rat terrier has not exactly learned. She will yap at my male chow, Mala...

Re: Pyoderma

We have been giving Ursa the flaxseed oil for a couple of months now, and her skin seems to have improved. She does have allergy issues, so I try to be careful with her. Two years ago, my male had hot spots, and we gave him fish oil to help him out. I did not notice any odor, but my son complained a...

Re: Pyoderma

Below is the link to the Merck Vet Manual on pyoderma. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/70900.htm I am commenting because my little girl, Ursa, has had various skin issues. Her underlying problem is Pemphigus Foliaceus and thyroid issues. We are managing these, although I sus...

Re: New to the forum, chow question..

She looks like my girl, Ursa, and if she is not all Chow, it would surprise me. We are in south Mississippi, and have the dogs clipped every spring when they start to shed. My wife objects to all the hair in the house. I think the big woolly bear look is neat.

Re: Pemphigus Foliaceus

Thanks for your replies. Ursa is receiving Azathioprine and Prednisone for the Pemphigus Foliaceus, and Soloxine for her thyroid. I do not know if a biopsy was done. I was working out of the country when the problem first arose, and my wife handled it through our vet. The chows are being fed dry foo...

Pemphigus Foliaceus

Does anyone have experience with Pemphigus Foliaceus? This spring, Ursa, my female developed blistering on the top of her muzzle at her nose, and the vet diagnosed it as Pemphigus Foliaceus. He began treatment with steroids, and we noted that she was loosing hair. Blood tests showed a thyroid condit...
