Re: 9 month old chow chow with growths on her soft pallet
Just make sure they are gentle and respectful with her. She'll feel 100% better when she is well again and will bond faster because she'll feel better.

Re: 9 month old chow chow with growths on her soft pallet
I've not heard of that disease. But I do know from Jeff whose Pekoe had a type of oral cancer, that chows do get oral problems because of the pegmentation in their mouths. So I would do two things, I would have the biopsy done, if they use the right anethesic, she won't even notice it a lot. And the...

Re: Firesong and Dreamdancer almost spring 2013
What a beautiful pair they are. It is nice to the mature dogs getting their pics on the forum. They are both so sweet. They sound like they have an ideal life. It is the quality of care not the amount of money spent on them and you are the best chow mama ever :D Wow Sirchow--thank you! :D I do the ...

Re: She bit me, now what???
Have you thougth of just using your hands? When you pet her, just pet the fur backwards, comb through it with your fingers and remove the tufts of hair manually. It's not as effective as a good combing, and she's not going to look as great, but with a blow dry, it will help. You could begin like thi...

Re: Other dogs don't like my dog...
The other thing about chows and other dogs is the way chows smell, they don't smell like other dogs and this can make some other dogs wonder what that, big furry thing is. Also when Hampton attempts to nip the other dogs, what do you do? Do you tell him to play nice? Chows are tough and they play ro...

Re: What type of Collar works best for you Chow?
My two wear rolled nylon collars with leather peices on the end so they can't tighten if they get caught on something, (a bit hard since the ends are hidden by their fur) these hold their id and rabies tags and they wear them 24/7/365. For walks they wear "easy walk" harnesses. They work r...

Re: Firesong and Dreamdancer almost spring 2013
Thank you everyone. Yep, Dreamdancer is almost a senior, Firesong is one, but both are very happy and will chase squirels, rabbits, they would like to find the owl and the crows that live in the woods, and I keep them away from the deer when they are there. We did get a coating of the white stuff ea...

$300 at a breeder or puppy mill? I've never seen a chow puppy from either for less than $500 and the average is $800. That's the one of the problems with byb or puppy mills there is no way to tell by price what kind of place the puppy comes from. Only experience and knowing the facts and questions t...

Firesong and Dreamdancer almost spring 2013
Here are a few new pics of my girl and boy. Firesong is 12 now and Dreamdancer will be 7 in July. There is still plenty of snow on the ground in these pictures, some I took last night, some this morning. Looking into the woods http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f10/Nightcloud_kLeshya/Firesong%20and%2...

I don't do that. I say with pride, "they are chows" When they say where can I get one, I ask, "How much experience do you have with dogs AND cats? Do you know anything at all about the training of independent breeds? Have you ever trained a dog of any kind, how about cats? I sometimes...

Re: Please give advice on feeding
She should be fed 4 times a day, no matter what kind of food she's getting. You can suppliment her diet with a bit of plain yogurt, plain cottage cheese, scrambled eggs. She really shouldn't be completly weaned at this age, she should be just weaning. But as she is, don't go backwards but she needs ...

She's probably a member of PETA, or the Humane Society. Both those organizations promote that kind of "attack" behavior and ignorance. If she's not a member she's been listening to too many of their stupid spokes persons. People who think that purebreds can't be found in rescues tick me of...

Re: Eating habits
It is completely normal for a chow to eat only what they want, when they want. I have a pair of chows who tend to be thin, so sometimes I will add something to their food which will make them eat it all up, but I do this rarely and only with really good things, like home made broth, their Solid Gold...

My two have only had the bordetella vac thing once, when they were boarded in an emergency. They were borded at their vets so I didn't worry about it one way or another. It is a cold like virus and they should be able to fight it off as sais if they are healthy, if they aren't they can get very sick...

Re: Few questions about chow.
The one thing no one has mentioned is nervous licking/scratching. Chows can develope a nervous habit of scratching or licking caused by excess energy and boredom. My boy was doing this for the past few months, he got an insect bite under his tail and before i knew it he'd licked, dug and scratched a...

Re: Slowly turning silver!
The pigmentation is caused by how the individual dog's body handles the metabolism of certain nutreients for melanin production. Genetics play a huge factor in this of course, but so do changes in metabolism, like the changes that occur after having a litter of puppies. Some of those hormonal change...

Re: Responding to "play" biting
I would say that what your girl is doing is acceptable. She is being gentle, I think she is bonding with you. I also would say if she ever uses presure or hurts then it's time for a very gentle correction. I actually don't think it will ever be needed. The only concern I would have is that she has d...

And mom says if I don't start acting at least half my age I may not make it to 13. But I knows she's being untruthful...she gets all mad when I put that stupid boy dog Dreamdancer in his place...and eat all the food up and take the treats and bark at the squirrels, but she gets all lovely dovey when...

Re: is it ok to hoover my chow puppy?
First the noise from a vaccum hurts the ears of most dogs, that's why they don't like them. So forcing your chow to stand or lay still while that thing is near them is like torturing him. If you want the dirt and dust etc off him, BRUSH him. It not only gets rid of the dirt, dust etc, it also stimul...

Re: OVER socialized Chow? Maybe in some cases
What you are seeing is not so much over socialization, in siewchingan's case but the fact that most dogs who are even somewhat socialized will not protect property. I mean seriously what does jewlery mean to Aslan? Dogs who guard property are generally badly socialized and four legged lawsuits waiti...

Re: chow coat
It actually looks like her coat is growing in just fine. It looks pretty full, just not very long yet. Chows really don't need to be bathed too often if they are brushed and combed out regularly. I haven't bathed my two in a long long time. They might get baths this summer, unless I can get them rea...

Re: Best foods to feed a chow
Premium dog foods, wet or dry or both that: contain no corn, no wheat, no gluten, no artificial flavors, no artificial perservatives, no artificial colors. It should contain about 27% protein that is from a good source, lamb and duck are actually the best, venison is also very good. Beef and chicken...

Re: Matilda with newly rescued 8 year old cat
Great that they are getting along, but I would keep the cat's food at least where Matilda can't reach it. Cat food is much higher in protein than dog food and can cause dietary upsets in a dog. Also being a chow she might decide she likes the cat's food better and start refsing her own food. Great t...

Congrats. Saw the FB message but havne't had a chance to say anything over there. Anyway, most chows do well with babies that belong to them.
