Re: Nicknames!
Tippsy was "Tippy-Doo", "Tipp", "Tippy", "Tipper-Doodle", or "Doodle-Bug". Jasper is "Jazz", "Jazzy", "Jazzy-Bear", "Jazz-Man", "Bubba", or "Bubba-Bear". Dixie is "Booger", "B...

Re: Rottweilers?
Nikki came home on Friday and goodness is she a little pistol! I forgot how much work a puppy is. Lol We're all so in love with her (including the other dogs). She's so sweet and SO SMART! She's already figured out to sit at the front door a whine to go out a potty! AND we left her for a couple hour...

Taste of the Wild. Jasper was on the wetlands formula for over a year without a problem. Then they started adding chicken into it and his allergies flared up, so we switched him to the Sierra Mountain formula and he's rout as rain on it.

Re: Rottweilers?
Jess: what a Perfect choice of name!!!! LOL. Best of luck with her.. Thank you Nancy. :) I actually offered up the name to my mom; remembering your Nikki. She liked it but never mentioned it to my dad. Last night, we were watching Free Willy on Nick@Nite and my dad tossed Nikki up. So we all ...

Re: Rottweilers?
I'm a little late jumping I but I would have to say like chows rotties need lots of socialization. And unfortunately sometimes lots of training. My sister had a rottie that was likely from a backyard breeder who was never trained or socialized but was wonderful nonetheless & extremely protectiv...

Re: 11 yr old chow
Just keep trying to give him the food. He'll eventually eat it. A dog would never let itself starve. And I've never found a simple way to give dogs meds... I've ALWAYS opened their mouth, dropped the meds into the back of their throat and held their mouth shut until they swallowed. Only tried and tr...

You should NEVER clip a chow's fur. It damages their coat.Aileen wrote:What is the ideal age to clip a chow's fur?

If he has to poop, he has to poop. You can't fix that. Carry a plastic or paper bag with you and pick up after him and throw it away.

Re: My chow's new haircut...
Things like this is why I will NEVER LET anyone else groom one of my dogs. All I can offer is to brush him regularly to encourage hair growth. That's what I've been doing with Jasper since my dad shaved him, and I can already see growth of his coat.

Re: Specific Brushes or Combs?
I only ever use(d) a comb, pin brush, and slicker on my mix with more chow like coat (and my purebred girl). I have a furminator, but truly hate it. The only reason it ever gets used is because my mix girl has such silky fur, the other brushes just slide right through it and doesn't get the loose ha...

Re: Puppy Question (curly tail?)
If he's a mix, it's likely it won't curl up. My mix Jasper (he's a lab/chow mix), his tail is curved, but he almost NEVER carries it over his back. It's more of a lab tail. However, when he was a puppy, his tail was just like a chows, curled over, tight to his back. That just changed as he aged. You...

Re: Chow Chows and cats
This post is quite upsetting to me too. I've always had cats with my dogs. Currently, we have 8 cats (one of which is a stray who adopted us). Dixie has raised 2 of our cats since they were little bitty kittens. Would my dogs chase a cat? More than likely. But they would never harm one. It's all in ...

Re: Rottweilers?
Actually, rotties were originally bred as herding and carting dogs. Later they started being trained as guard dogs. And I don't feed into or listen to the stereotypes of ANY breed. Am I careful approaching a a large dog? Yes. But I approach any dog carefully. I've never had a bad encounter with a me...

Re: Lap Dogs!!
Cute! My 2 chow mixes LOVE to think they're lap dogs. Lol At 50 and 85 lbs though, that's a lot of dog. Plus my 7 lbs pomeranian is more of what I'd like sitting in my lap, but he prefers to sit next to me. Lol My purebred chow girl, Tippsy, wanted love on her terms and her terms alone. I raised her...

Re: Rottweilers?
Thank you Nancy and Siriol. :) Quite honestly Siriol, my dad is hardly ever here. During the week, he's here at night from typically between 9 PM and 7 AM. Same for Saturdays. Sunday is really the only day he's home. So, my mom and I will be the primary care givers of this pup, just like the rest. A...

Re: Rottweilers?
Thank y'all. I was told by a rottie owner that I met at Petsmart yesterday, that with my experience with chows, I shouldn't have any issues raising and training a rottie. Rory's Dad; I wouldn't even know how to research this breeder... And I tried to talk to my dad to get information about the...

Yeah... We lost Snooki a month and a half ago, and now my dad is definitely getting this puppy...
So that'll make 6 dogs, 8 cats (1 of which is a stray that has adopted us), a parakeet, a hamster, and a mouse.

Rottweilers?
Does anyone know anything about rotties? I know the general stuff from my limited exposure to them, but I'm not sure I know enough to own one...? My dad has decided to purchase a rottie pup from a co-worker's brother who breeds them, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be the one who ends up training a...
