@Marti, an oreo, I hadn't thought of that. @chowpups, I leash train all my cats, along with train them to ride in an automobile. Windsor, one of my cats I had years ago was leash trained like a dog. On trips, I did not take a litter box. When he needed to go, he would let me know, and I would stop a...

Re: Goofy dogs!
I think my two have seen cattle. When we lived in Savannah, my son used to take the dogs up town to see the horses that pulled the carriages. Ursa was fascinated by the horses. She liked to just look at them.

Re: Is 7weeks too young to buy a chow?
Having had experience with rescue animals that did not have the experience of time with their parents and litter mates, it is very important that the puppy stay with his/her mother and litter at least 8 weeks. There is a lot of learning that takes place at this time, and you will have difficulties p...

Re: please help me with this flea problem..
Dawn dish washing detergent works very well to remove fleas. If the infestation is sever, you may have to bath her several days. We use Advantix primarily because it also repels ticks in addition to fleas. I cannot speak for the rest of the country, but because the weather is generally warm here, in...

Of course Yoda has to come along, He is Ursa's and Malachi's adopted child. They found and raised him. He is leash trained, which helps.

Well, I took my two along with Yoda to get a photo. This is to raise funds for the local shelter.

@chowpups, we have a Drinkwell 360 fountain in the kitchen. My two will come inside and drink it dry, so I guess they prefer it to the bowls we have outside.
@DuaneDiggins, I would take my pet to the vet's if it had been much more than one day.

Re: Silly Question
I have a male and a female chow. Ursa, my female, loves my wife and will follow commands for her. (except for staying out of the kitchen, Ursa wants to help her mother clean up should she drop anything) Malachi, my male has selective hearing, and cannot hear my wife. It is as much a game as anything...

Re: Male or Female???
Ursa is something else. The weather has cooled off with a front that came through, and she is enjoying it. She can be pretty rough and tumble if she wants to. She has worked a number on the corrugated pipe, and her new favorite thing is the sidewall from a tire, which I had cut to go at the base of ...

Hailey, if you were my granddaughter, and your grandmother said "NO" to a dog, we would both be in trouble for trying to bring a dog into the house. We actually need some input from Jess. For now, I would suggest that you volunteer at the local animal shelter. That would allow you to assoc...

Marti, I am out in the garage, and the dogs are in the yard, so they can't here the video. Yoda is asleep in front of the monitor, and didn't even twitch when Max barked. He just isn't interest in what dogs might have to say.

Re: First time chow/dog owner...
She looks like she is an open face chow. It is VERY important for your chow puppy to remain with her mother and litter mates. She will learn many valuable lessons in this time. I can tell you from personal experience through many years and many rescues that dogs and cats that are not allowed to stay...

Re: Jumping...how high?
Malachi will jump over the flower bed that I put beside the walk, which he isn't supposed to do. :( I will probably put up a bamboo fence to discourage him. To clear the plants, that would be about 16" high. He does so without any running start, since there is no room to do so. I don't encourag...

Re: Male or Female???
I got Ursa first. She is female (duh), and had not been socialized. After I had her about a year, I saw Malachi at the animal shelter. He is a teddy bear, and the girls at the shelter just loved him, so he was well socialized at three months. They made a good pair, with Malachi helping to bring our ...

Re: how to train my chow to walk better on a leash?
The Stop and Sit method have worked for me. When we first go out the door, they want to pull, but a few stops usually take care of it. In the van and in town, I use the harnesses and 6ft leads, but when we walk around out in the yard (country) I use 20 ft leads on them and regular collars. Most of t...

The newspaper had an article on owls, and my wife and I read it. She decided that it was a barred owl. I went on the internet and found a youtube clip of a barred owl and played it. It sounded close. There was a relate clip with a great horned owl. I played it. Malachi immediately jumped up and star...

Re: Does my chowling develop bad behavior?
Wow Marti, that was great, especially all the photos. I may get some clippers like that. The other day, my son nipped Ursa with our nail clippers, and that was it. No more for her. That night, I was able to complete the job, but she was a nervous wreck the whole time. It took a long time to reassure...

Re: I wish some people would just mind their own business...
Maintaining a pet's health is what it is all about. If I knew what to do to make Malachi stop scratching, I would do it. Steroid shots are NOT the answer. Ace (Maine coon cat) gets a special diet because of kidney stones. Believe me, food is cheaper than vet visits. We feed Iams, because it doesn't ...

Jess, I have considered changing to one of the "top" name foods which you mention, but I don't want to upset Ursa's stomach, so I haven't. I understand where you are coming from. This fall is the first time since I joined the forum that Ursa has a full coat ( well almost, her tail is still...

I am glad you adopted a chow who needed a loving home. Explain to her about the eye drops. I know that she won't understand a word, but she will understand the emotional message that you send as you explain. Good luck with her eyes.
