Re: tips on crate training
Crate training with Raine has been possibly the best decision that we made in her early development. She is almost 8 months old. Last week she had to have elbow surgery and must be crated/confined for 2-3 months to allow the joint to heal properly. If I had not taught her that her crate was a safe c...

Re: Chow + Children
I agree with Brisco. A lot can be said about the temperament and socializing of a chow. I trust my male chow 100% with children, babies and small animals. He is mildly curious and extremely gentle. People often let their small children love all over him. No issues... A child once reached too quickly...

How old is your chow? It looks as if (he/she???) has been shaved and is growing out?

Re: Interaction with other dogs
My adult male chow LOVES small dogs. He whimpers if I do not let him interact. When allowed time with small dogs, I place him in a sit or down and let the small dog sniff all over him before they mingle. He is very gentle, but extremely curious with the smaller dogs. Larger dogs he is more indiffere...

Oh My Goodness he is adorable! Smooth chows have a short coat. BUT, with his longer nose and tail-set I would guess that he might only be about 1/2 to 3/4 chow. (just a guess)

Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
I have pretty much given up on the GCH drive for Chance. No one wants to show up for majors in Texas any more. I will have to drive him more than 800 miles (one way) to the nearest major. We will try a few long trips this coming year. But I am no longer killing myself to campaign. And it will be tou...

Re: First chow chow as my second dog
We have zero food aggression with our adult male chow. Our female chow puppy is not aggressive but she is pushy and sees nothing wrong with eating out of everyone's bowl. She does not growl or nip at the others. She simply pushes in and tries to eat their food. For this reason I feed her in the othe...

Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
Thanks, I too have stopped posting a great deal. It seems as if some people are wanting to fight. Heaven forbid that we try to do the right thing before breeding and it costs us a lot of money and we chose to share a small portion of the costs. That reminds me that I finally took Chance in for his O...

Puppy shows are so silly... and so much fun! Rain won group both days, but she was so tired that we did not stick around for Best Puppy in show.

Re: Bad behavior of Walter
A quick tip that I use with pullers is to anticipate the pull and abruptly change directions, saying "TURN!". We have had walks that we spent quite a bit of time going in circles as I was constantly changing direction. A couple times out and they get the idea and watch me, sticking by much...

Thanks... I am smitten! I am entering her in a little puppy show this weekend. (non-AKC) It is more or less for socialization and to help her become accustomed to the sounds and smells. Should be worth a day of laughs.

Re: Chow puppy with pink nose?
I didn't buy her from a puppy store and I don't know and didn't really care how legitimate her registration was (she apparently was registered). She was in a bad situation so I adopted her... she had a unique rescue situation. Her eyes got darker but her nose and lips never did. It turns out that s...

He looks GREAT! I am really impressed with how he is coming along! Thanks for the comments on the NOHS. Chance will probably get bumped out of the top 10 because I have not showed him in an OH show in months and don't have any shows with him planned until late October. I think Spartacus will jump up...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
Chance is an inch or two taller than most of the chows in the ring. He is 75lbs and I personally love his build. He moves very well. It sounds like Spartacus might be close to the same size. I told my breeder that I want to finish this pup as well. I know they would help me but I love the bonding ti...

Re: Romeo doesn't care for food.....much
60lbs is well within the standard. They are a handful to pick up! I have taught Chance to put his front paws on the grooming table and help pull himself up for grooming. We now have four dogs in the house and if I do not stay on top of cleaning the tile looks furry like carpet. Chance "tolerate...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy
Congratulations on his first point! He looks fantastic. I am concerned that it will take us a fortune to champion our new puppy. This last year I showed Chance in 8 shows and he was the ONLY chow. No points at all towards his GCH this year. I am making a list of large shows around the US. We will ha...

Aha.... His actions make a lot more sense. I thought when looking at the first two pictures that he looked closer to 6 months. But, I was not sure because different lines develop differently. I have heard of joint supplements but think they are for older dogs with joint issues like arthritis. I am n...

Re: Adopted chow loves play biting
Do you have access to "Bully Sticks"? We have discovered that giving one to our puppy gives her something to chew on and keeps her busy for long periods. Is Charlie interested in balls at all? I keep a basket of various size, shape, and texture. I toss one a short distance and Raine will r...

Re: Adopted chow loves play biting
First let me start off by saying that Charlie is an absolute doll! Thank you for bringing him into your home. This is an adolescent time for your puppy. Lots of fun, but he is not sure who is running the show. The biting is something that is usually addressed when they are quite young. Because you g...

Re: My Chow Chow keeps getting attacked by other dogs
We have had other dogs lunge at us - "fear biters". Thankfully their owner has them on a leash and they cannot reach us. Chance looks bewildered when this happens. He believes all dogs should have good manners. I have been told by a behaviorist that chows look intimidating to other dogs be...

Re: Help with getting two chow chows!
I have never tried two puppies at the same time because one is already a handful. I already had three dogs when I got my last puppy. She is now 14 weeks old and I am still keeping her away from the other dogs with short supervised one on one time with the others. She is still a bit nippy with the ot...
