Re: Desperate Senior Chow Girl has until Friday--Northern CA
Another Indigo update -- I gave her a bath yesterday and brushed a ton of fur off of her and also cut off a lot of mats. She was all perked up when she left but there is a lot more work to be done. Today I took her to the vet for a check-up, to get her eye looked at, and to get her nails trimmed. He...

Re: Desperate Senior Chow Girl has until Friday--Northern CA
Quick update on Indigo. She is doing well. We haven't heard a peep out of her since she has been here. Teekie, our Pekingese, doesn't know what to make of her or why the other chows aren't doing something about her. She won't make eye contact with any of them and seems very shy and a little confused...

Re: Desperate Senior Chow Girl has until Friday--Northern CA
Indigo is now safe with me. My daughter went to pick her up today and just arrived back with her. Indigo met each of the dogs here and went on a short walk with them and is now out exploring the yard by herself. Her one eye is a little weepy and she walks very gingerly but I think her nails are over...

Re: Desperate Senior Chow Girl has until Friday--Northern CA
Okay, that is great Lou. Sorry I didn't respond yesterday. I was having an 18th birthday party for Caitlyn which was actually in Ukiah. I had planned on going to see Indigo since I was already there but we got caught up in a crazy Coast Guard inspection at the lake that set me back 2 hours and I did...

Re: Desperate Senior Chow Girl has until Friday--Northern CA
I spoke to Kathi and she said she would talk to Lauren. Lauren called and left a message with my daughter but I have called her back 3 times and haven't heard back. I know people are busy and rescuing is a huge undertaking so I am not trying to make anyone sound bad, I am just saying that there was ...

Re: Desperate Senior Chow Girl has until Friday--Northern CA
Kind of but not entirely if that makes sense. I contacted the shelter about all three chows after seeing they had been posted for over a month and I know they are pretty rural. I asked them if there were any rescues interested in them and offered to transport or short term foster for any of them as ...

Re: Desperate Senior Chow Girl has until Friday--Northern CA
Update -- I have been able to buy Indigo a little more time (a few more days). This shelter is actually extremely helpful in trying to get as many animals as possible out so she is being very flexible with me as long as we get a plan together. I still have not heard back from the rescue here as to w...

Re: Sneezing...
Boogie does this all the time. He also kicks his legs really hard up in the air while he is sneezing. My other two don't do it but they also don't spend as much time on their backs as Boogie. My Pekingese Teekie didn't know what they were doing when they started rolling when he first got here. Now t...

Senior Chow Girl -- Northern CA
A rural shelter in Ukiah, California up in Northern California has a senior blue Chow girl whose owners abandoned her at the shelter due to foreclosure after 13 years with them. She has been at the shelter about a month or so and the shelter is at double capacity. I can't take her because I have a f...

Re: Rest in Peace ... Our Garden Guard
I am very sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful girl. My family and I had our first loss of a chow right before Christmas last year and most here on the site have also experienced the loss of a chow so we do understand. They really do touch your life.

Re: How to train a husband...???
Well I think your huband will learn after a few times, but yes, you are right, bad things can happen. Boogie used to bolt from us. Once my mom came in the front door and didn't do anything to stop him. He took off running for blocks and my daughter chased him through traffic which was very scary. We...

Re: WHAT A SCARE!
One of the characteristics of chows is that they are willfull. When something is in their mind it is hard to get them to listen. My Boogie has taken off like that and it scares the heck out of you. And the more you chase them, usually the more they will run. He would let us catch up to him and as so...

Jess, I responded on the other site but wanted to respond here as well. I am heartbroken and crying for you. Re: Just adopted older chow-chow
Awwwww good for you for taking in Jackson. Seniors will surprise you with the things they can do. And don't worry about the fur. It grows back really fast especially with a good quality food. We had a senior foster we got from a hoarding situation (he passed away right before Christmas after being w...

Re: UPDATE on Koda
That is weird that they didn't use a cone. All of mine have had them with stiches. Even my cat had one. And yes you can buy them at a pet store. They have some different types too. Just beware that he might not like wearing it. Boogie acts like he is paralyzed when it is on. He won't move at all. An...

Re: New owner-What are the must have supplies??
For socializing with kids, take him to parks, walk him when school lets out, and walk him by kids sporting events (soccer games, baseball games, etc.) This will help him get used to kids running around and commotion. I used to take Boogie to all my daughters sporting events. The siblings of the kids...

Re: Is the Chow right for me?
I think a chow would be fine in your situation. Mine lay around a lot so they don't need huge yards. The only thing I would warn about is the pool. Make sure there is a fence around it to protect your chow. Typically, chows aren't good swimmers because of their fur and cat like feet. You wouldn't wa...

Re: Knew it was too good to be true......:(
Well I do think you were incorrect in having your dogs off leash in a non off leash dog park however the lady sounds like she overreacted and you were quick to correct your mistake. I will tell you though, some people walk their dogs on leash because they are not social enough to be off leash at the...

Re: Question about backpack
I have seen trainers on TV use them for high energy dogs who have extra energy to burn off. You are supposed to put bottled water in it or something with some weight so they get more tired from walking with weight on them. We had considered getting one for Boogie for his walks since he is a puller a...

Poor thing. That is awful. I am glad that she is being taken care of now. She must have had one heck of a life before being rescued.
