Re: My chow is attacking my heeler.
Wow Dominic, that sounds like a tough day! There sounds like some confusion in who is the alpha. Rott eats first (alpha) but chow walks through door first (alpha), Chow goes defensive first and other two go to you (chow is alpha). Age and size cannot be determining alpha. The dogs them self will dec...

Re: Loki and the baby ritual
I had chows growing up as a kid and hence I am a chow snob now. My mother tells this story: When my mother would put me in my crib to sleep our chow Matty would lay in the doorway and sleep. When I woke and fussed or cry, Matty would get up and Chow bump or huff my mother to let her know I was awake...

Re: Maddoxx: Bathing, dry skin and oily fur
UPDATE: We went to vet and had a checkup and to take another try at this. We did skin scrapping to look for yeast. The results were that there was very little indication of yeast on the surface. So we tried a different track. Instead of looking for allergies we tried a new shampoo that was made for ...

Re: excercising chow puppy
I think all the advice is great, when your puppy is tired you will know. If it is hot bring water and cut the walk short. My puppies handled 1 hour walks. Once thing I think is great advice for puppies is to avoid stairs for the first 6 - 12 months. The bones are growing and you put alot of stress o...

Re: Anxiety and socialization problems! Please help!
Food aggression with other animals: If you have several dogs you have to determine who is the leader of this pack, and treat them as such. Alpha gets to eat first and from whatever bowl they wish. If you try to change this natural behavior, you are causing the issue. If you cannot feed pack style, t...

Re: Anxiety and socialization problems! Please help!
Socialisation: Maddoxx at 1 year old stopped playing with toys. If he cannot eat it or at least chew on it, it is a waste of time. Marru is just turning 1 and stills loves her toys and plays soccer with me in the backyard. In terms of other people. Chows like their immediate family and have no need ...

Re: Possible problem developing
If your chow barks and you wake up and go downstairs, then your chow has done a great job of training you. Soon it will be two barks and a huff for a cookie. My chows sleep in my bedroom (but not on the bed). If they are within yelling distance. I would suggest you train a command. For us it is &quo...

Re: spaying or not??
We had Marru Spayed. Go to a trusted vet. We did hers before her first heat and it did not slow her down one bit. She is no less calmer. That comes with age in my opinion. When talking to her vet, Ask if they have ever done a chow before, or have special equipment for oxygen. Chows have black mouths...

Re: How to introduce new puppy ???
Hey Pinoy, Congradulations on the new puppy! When we brought Marru home we followed a few steps that seemed to work well. Lots of time on the floor with the new puppy and letting Maddoxx sniff and get used to her scent. Since she smells like a puppy he natural knew to be gentle and was more skittish...

Re: My chow wont come to my calls..
The selective listening Chow. What a wonderful aspect of the chow. This is what makes the chows the breed we love. They can actually decide. Maddoxx and Marru Tips: 1. Choose your battles - If your chow is doing something in the yard, peeing / voiding / zoomies / chasing another animal / eating a co...

I would like to thank everyone who posted advise. In particular I would like to personally thank the person that posted last. I can relate to much of what you wrote and I'm taking your advise. I am better equipped to deal with situations ( like dogs off leash while walking). You made me think back ...

E-Collar for me is the cone. Elizabethan Collar. Like all the old films of the Queen.Cam Atis wrote: @nanouet: e-collar? a cone is better. Sorry, not an advocate of electric collars.
I am not an advocate of shock collars either.

My vet and I have our tried and true hot spot treatment. Shave the affected area (its sad yes but health first) They area must be left to the open to dry. Wipe the area frequently with Peroxide wipes (3 times a day) Panalog Ointment until the chow stops trying to bite or lick the wound. We use antib...

Re: drinking water
We had the same issue with Marru until the age of 6 - 7 months and then no issue.
Our only solution was having towels close by and drying her immediately or else we have to bath her to clean it properly ( avoid bacteria )
She used to sleep with her head on the edge of the water bowl. So cute

Not wanting to delve too deep in Dog Psych here but chows and people love routine. Step out of that routine and voila anxiety. That being said. the same 8 blocks for year will get boring and there may be a time you need to walk somewhere unknown. Best to tackle the problem now. I have tried, choke c...

Re: My Chow mix bit me. :(
I use Pinoy51's technique of being the Alpha of the house. It works fantastic. It made sense that once I stopped thinking like a human and thought about how my chows talk to me and how could I talk to them in a way they understood. The best characteristic about a chow is the ability to think, someti...

When we brought Marru home, Maddoxx (2.5 years) was not too happy. He would Bark when she approached and leave when she got near. Wanted nothing to do with her. This worried us. Good news. It temporary. Like everyone has said, he needs to adjust to sharing his space. The other issue to take care of ...

Maddoxx: Bathing, dry skin and oily fur
Maddoxx is my 3 year old male (neutered) black chow. I am concerned with his skin, fur and such. He grows a beautiful perfect black coat, he is a wonder to look at. Except, his fur get a popcorn smell and you can feel a waxy feeling in his coat (usually, on his back rear) So I bath him. I do have ex...

Re: TransFURmation time line for chow puppy to adult coat?
This info is unverified and comes from my experience. How quickly a chow comes into an adult coat depends on age and on climate. All chows start as puppies and get a nice downy puppy coat, soft to the touch and fluffy, smells great for the first couple of months, easy to brush and keep clean. They w...
Re: Mats!
The solution is the De-Matting Rake Here is a picture link http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/218-VHI4TvL._SL500_AA300_.jpg The key to your chow not throwing a hissy fit is: Do not just pull it through. Get the rake under the mat and then your finger unders the rake. Hold the hair under so you ar...

Re: How to groom?
If you breeder meant once in a lifetime being from age 1 till the end.. then yes. Your breeder should have said twice per season. Your chow will blow their winter coat (Big shedding) and then once again in the fall (smaller shedding) as the new undercoat grows for winter! Your investment in combs an...

My Nukka (4.5 mths) is pro with potty. We learned the hardway with Maddoxx. During those first weeks ( until she learnt where to go ) we took her out every hour, whether she wanted to or not, more often than not she just wanted to be with us. Lots of happy voice " Good girl " when she peed...

Re: Clicker training, multiple dogs, impromptu training...
When a dog barks it is warning off or drawing attention. This is an unwanted behavior because it drives us crazy and it shows insecurity in your dog. He is not sure you aware of a possible danger is letting you know. So one bark or guff or snuff and then he should look at you for direction. Since yo...
