Re: New chow owner. Any advice is appreciated
Sounds like you guys are doing a great job. Bear is quite a handsome chow! Our first chow, Loki, came to us quite unexpectedly as he was homeless and found by our son. I knew absolutely NOTHING about chows. It was all trial and error and lots of love and patience. That was ten years ago and we have ...

Re: Buddy2, shelter chow, still afraid
I am so sorry you are having such a difficult time. Bless you for rescuing him but I know all to well the baggage that comes with rescues but the payback is great! One of our rescues had a fear of doorways while another had a fear of anything with a handle. Is there a friend or neighbor who has a do...

Re: Chow Life changes
Good for her!!! Our Loki, who is 11, has severe arthritis but still manages his daily walk. Our other chow, Frisco, is a bit younger and much more energetic but always makes sure he doesn't stray too far from Loki. It is so hard to see them struggle.

Re: Do I get a second Chow?
We rescued our first chow, Loki, ten years ago. A year later we rescued another chow, Frisco. We were asked to take Frisco by our vet as he had been surrendered by his owners and was to be euthanized. I was reluctant to have two male chows. They met on neutral ground and I agreed to a weekend trial....

Re: Need advice
Thanks so much for the reply. We are into our second laser treatment and I am giving it a chance. I hate to see him struggle and I don't know how patient I can be before we come up with a more aggressive solution. I know my vet is very conservative and I appreciate that but I want Loki to have a goo...

He is gorgeous!!! He reminds me of our chow, Loki, when he was younger. We lived in Richmond for a few years. I saw lots of dogs during that time but never any chows in the U.K.

Need advice
Has anyone had laser therapy for their chow? Our vet has recommended this treatment for Loki for his back leg. A short history...when Loki was rescued he was unable to walk on his back leg. His first trip to the vet revealed that he had pins in his back leg. He was only about a year old when we resc...

Re: 2 boys together?
I am certainly no expert, but I can relate my limited experience. I have two male chows for ten years and they are great buddies. They have never had an issue between them. I "adopted" Loki when he was two and a year later Frisco came into our lives. Both are rescues. I never thought it wo...

Re: Panting
Thanks! That is a good idea. The other day he was panting so bad I rushed him to vet. We were concerned it was bloat but fortunately it wasn't. Vet gave him Pepcid and additional pain meds and he was better but still panting from time to time. I will start keeping a record

It's about time!!!
We all know that chows get little respect. Imagine my surprise when I opened the newspaper on Friday and there on the cover of the weekend magazine was a full picture of a gorgeous chow!! This was in conjunction with the upcoming Philadelphia Dog Show. It's about time they acknowledged our chows!!!!!

Re: Chow chow and relations with other dogs
I can only speak to my experience. We have two male chows, both are rescues. We had Loki over a year before Frisco came into our lives. I never thought they would get along. I was very surprised at their first meeting that Loki was indifferent to Frisco. In the beginning I only agreed to take Frisco...

Panting
Loki is 11 years old. About six months ago he started excessive panting. I took him to the vet and they diagnosed a urinary infection. When I took him back for a recheck, his urine was clear but he was still panting. Our vet did blood tests and X-rays and said he had severe arthritis but before putt...

Re: New Here, Hi there!
Welcome!! Your puppy is adorable. We never wanted a chow but then one day our son found a lame chow in a parking lot who was clearly in distress. We all fell in love. Loki came to live with us when it was clear he was abandoned. It wasn't long before our vet asked us to foster a chow who was surrend...
