Re: My chow's size
Yup, within standard. Not everyone gets the 'bear' genes like ours have. FengHuang was a little shorter and a massive 65lbs of muscle and bone. ShenLung is a whopping 85lbs (summer weight) and right at the spec height, he can however pull 500 lbs with ease, jump up 8 feet, etc., and he is a full 8&q...

Re: Meat (Chicken/Beef) for Chow
Hahahah, don't forget Chipmunk, Squirrel, Wild Turkey, Duck, Canada Goose, Cardinal, Seagull, Mouse, Ant, Spider, Fly, Mosquito, Lamb, Fox (not tasted yet, but trying real hard), Goat (not tasted yet but desperately wishing), all these make up the dietary needs of your Chowling. YMMV Our furkids pre...

Re: TPLO surgery for torn knee CCL with severe dysplasia ???
FuShiLu has blown both hind knees completely, first went at 6 months, healed (scarred) quick, second went at about a year and a half, and took much longer to heal. Now 2 and and a few months of age she is chasing everything and running with lots of other dogs slowly building her strength, over a 100...

Re: My dog is being aggressive.
What they said in spades. Demand your money back form this 'trainer'. Perhaps you could post what you were hoping to gain from going to a trainer. Chow's are very intelligent from day one and with a little calm guidance generally learn to do everything with you - not someone else. (most animals fit ...

Re: Rough playing
Don't worry. We had a rescue Pom for a few and after the first week she and ShenLung totally went for it. At times we swore the little thing was dead. Nope, just kept coming back for more. We ended up calling her Zombie. ;). She lives next door with another Pom and still hangs out with ShenLung now ...

Re: Really ticked off
FuShiLu had it and bad, both eyes completely shut, one got infected. But only one visit is necessary, maybe, maybe one more to tack a corner that a stitch let go. FuShiLu has had nomproblems since and this happened before she was even a full year old. She does have one blue eye due to the infection,...

Re: Chow chow and relations with other dogs
Let's see, ShenLung has looked after several neighbours dogs for various times, raised a rescue Shi-Tzu until we found a loving home, lived with Eeyore a Lion head bunny and protected him constantly from FengHuang's desire to have him as hossenfeffer and of course instantly accepted and raised FuShi...

Just give the little fluff ball time, we have two fur kids and all hardwood and tile. They tear around, wrestle without issue. FuShiLu is now 18 months and ShenLung is 7 years.

Re: Leash help
Harness, leash/collar, really doesn't matter both have positive and negative values. For the pulling, just get a longer leash, combine a few, when they start to pull, drop the leash and step on it, don't say anything. If you need to walk up the leash to shorten it for tighter control or you want the...

Re: Does Your Chow "Hunt"?
Chows are predators, love little furry things that scream. ;) Ours have hunted from day one. Very successful, better than wolf (20%) and closer to Hyena (80%), FuShiLu is still learning the art of success, ShenLung is very efficient (FengHuang was the absolute master). Not only can ShenLung climb, h...

Re: CAN NOT KEEP YOGI
All good advice. As I've posted before, patience, calm, persistence, rinse repeat ad infinium. Love is earned, but once your chow makes the choice you will never feel it was any effort at all. Best from ShenLung and FuShiLu.

Re: Is he to big.
Bigger they are, the more love that have to give! ShenLung is 7yrs old towers over most chows and is 95lbs and still able to run down the furry screaming critters. As a puppy he grew at a phenomenal rate, so much so his skin was pulled tight over his body for about 2 yrs, zero wrinkles. Now he as lo...

Re: I desperately need advice!
Well, keep a cardboard box handy and throw it down when they start. We call ours 'the box of death'. You going for volume. Your trying to refocus their attention. Don't do/say anything else, you need to be in charge, thus calm. Have you determined the order they go through a door, get attention, get...

We trained them from pups, first with fingers, then small soft brushes, and it really is important so good on you for looking into it.

We think they live forever in our hearts.
FengHuang passed away last spring at 5yrs and I can assure you she ensured her memory would never dissipate.
ShenLung is now 6 yrs, FuShiLu is 11mths and we hope to have them both around forever.

Good advice, neither you or your boyfriend are alphas to your chow. This is not a good situation. You must be calm and in control, your will is second to none, as with any animal, going to take alot of work on both of your parts.

Re: A chow and a toy dog
We has a Pekinese rescue her for several months about a year old, 25 lbs. ShenLung our large male Chow is 85lbs and those two became best of friends. Everytime he pounced on her while they played we were sure she died, but nope, still fighting, so we started calling her zombie. She actually lives ne...

As mentioned, just pay attention. Now get a cardboard box, slam it down, don't say anything, then go look. It'll all get resolved in no time. You. Are. Being. Guarded. Enjoy the luxury.

Re: Have you ever left your chow home alone?
ShenLung and FuShiLu are home all day nearly every day. He is 6 yrs, she is 7 mths. Was the same when FengHuang was alive. Years ago our two American Fuzzy Lop bunnies Roo and Poo were always home alone throughout the house. What's the real question?

Yes, these are re-hashed around the internet, over and over based on zero scientific data, just 'reported' instances accounting for a small percentage of animals historically dictating all future interpretations. Humans are so smart as individuals and total idiots en masse. Apparently small dogs don...
