Victory Quick question...why do think storms, firecrackers, and gunshots are triggers? After having OJ almost 7 1/2 years, he is still freaked out by thunder even though he has never been left out in any storm since we have him. He also runs right back to the house at the sound of firecrackers. On t...

Hi and welcome! I rescued a male chow off the street about 7+ years ago. I know exactly what you mean by ferocious and almost feral! Be strong, be careful and don't let her push you around. These dogs really would rather NOT be in charge and actually will come around when shown enough love, patience...

You don't say how she is but if she's a pup and getting around 8 months to a year she may be getting a little dog aggressive. It is one of the chows traits. Maybe this dog in particlar gave her a hard time when she was younger and now she wants to let him know she's not a baby anymore. My dogs still...

Did anyone notice they called it an Akita? Yeah Adam we caught that. In my opinion that makes the article even more credible. If anyone staged it, used pics of two different dogs, etc, then surely they would have gotten the breed correct. Unless of course that's all part of the bigger conspiracy! :...

Briscoe An open mind as far as the article may in fact be true. These pics are taken in Queens NYC. Many of these inner city chows are inbred for quick cash and bred to be aggressive. Remember a few weeks back when a newbie asked how to breed his chow as he wanted to keep an original chow line alive...

Jeff That was from 2005. But he would still leave me at six since Nala passed about a year and a half ago. If you look closely at the pic with guy on his back the dogs mouth is open and appears to be snarling or growling. I would think if anyone went to all that trouble to doctor the photo and use d...

OJ doesn't growl...just makes that face and if he wants and can...bites. Not so much anymore but in the first year we had him he was really bad! Like I've said before anywhere else he would have been put down. Nancy Yeah definately! I wish I had him from a pup! He really is a great dog now. So expre...

Lou It's not a doctored photo as far as I can tell. This piece was huge, about 1/2 the page in the paper. So from me rotating it and shrinking it from something like 3805 X ? down to 750 X ? and then photobucket shrinking it again, this is how it shows up on the thread. In the original which I have ...

Nancy

Might be the dog showed that aggression to it's owner and got booted, or maybe just ran off when let off it's lead in a park. But the filed fangs give some insight into the dog's personality. Kind of like when Bumble got his teeth pulled out on Rudolph: The Red-nosed Reindeer.

Taz
Take another look! He may be scared at this point in time, but look at his fangs. They have been ground down in an attempt to prevent aggression and biting.

I have seen that same look in OJ as the top photo and believe me it isn't fear.

To Catch a Chow!

Daily News (NYC) article from Feb 24 '05. I thought there was more of a story with it, but I see it's only photos with captions.

Mine have never had any formal training. I did dominance drills with the pups when they were young on the advice of the woman vet who Koko bit when she was 6 weeks old. I think the dogs picked up on her fear of chows. They never had any problems with the male vet at the same office, even OJ walked a...

Taz Here's one! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/sixchows/angrychowsmaller.jpg This photo was featured in an article in The Daily News 2/24/05. This is a NYC newspaper. Well my experience has been that unless they are well socialized, eight months is the cut off date. Usually by 8 months they have chosen their circle of friends and after that it's "no new faces!" I would rather outsiders such as the meter reader be afraid of my dogs. Think about it for a ...

I'm a little confused. Why would a UTI cause a dog to pee on the couch and not anywhere else in the house? I think if the dog was sick he would go other places. Seems like there is more of a message there than just a need to relieve himself.

We had a similar problem with OJ but it wasn't the couch, it was our bed! When Nala was in heat and we took her away to my father's house it must have been close to "the day". So I guess in OJ's mind it was no *Censored Word* for him and so no *Censored Word* for us! Only time it ever happ...

I'm glad when people back away. You never know who or when any dog might bite someone. Who needs the grief? Neither I nor my dogs have to prove anything to anyone. I know many dog owners with all different breeds who swear their dog will never bite anyone. Like I said in another thread...people are ...

Well when OJ is biting the fence and knocking the pickets out it's a little hard to deny he's a "mean" chow. Like I tell people, he was a rescue that never would have been given a chance anywhere else. He is much calmer now after having him about 7 years. For a long time we treated him lik...
