Re: Biting issue

Levins, it is your puppy trying to gain attention. In young pups this is how they play with littermates. Here's a suggestion. When you arrive home, have a supply of treats in your pocket. Announce your presence. If he has learned basic commands yet, ask him to sit. This is a nice calm position and y...

Re: New Dogmom New Puppy!

Chow pups can go from reserved to full on in charge in an instant. When our now 5 year old male 1st arrived at our house, he hesitated to come out of the travel crate (short car ride home, no plane trip or other involved). He sat in one spot on the living room floor for hours and barely moved. We ha...

Re: Dog is HYPER-active, doesn't respond outside

Very odd, but I find I don't have much to add to AppleBear's response. It's spot on. Since I can't totally sit on the sideline due to my nature, I would wonder about your description on the smooth chow. I actually find mine goofy rather than aloof like my roughs, but he actually is more agile, lazy ...

Re: Why does my chow look different?

Oh, I think she is a doll. Don't worry about the size. Girls tend to be a bit smaller...dainty you know. And the ears are really the right shape. Chows should have triangular ears. They appear to be well placed too, they should be at the outer edge of the eyes. I think she will grow into them. BTW, ...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy

Yep, same here. They are never together unsupervised. They do great together when crated side by side on the way to shows and when on show collars. Rory will complain when Toby eats 1st, but the 'outside' order is OK. They don't really compete for Amber, which is good. Rory tends to want to be nurse...

Re: Long-snouted chow chows

Yes, picture please. Chows come in a few different varieties, so your description of a 'long snouted' chow may really just be of the 'older' variety. Chows are in fact a spitz breed, and historically have been more of an open faced breed. The current trend, outside of the Asian countries, tends to b...

Re: Fair price?

Thanks for the inclusion. And it has been duly noted that your post was only on price. It seems my explanation on what goes into some of the pricing issues also offends, so we can certainly discontinue the conversation. Of course showing a dog doesn't make it better. It's just a tool that is used to...

Re: Fair price?

Well Brisco, that was quite the rant. And I can't say I blame you in some aspects. But some of the issue is the rarity of the breed in your area. If there are only 3 breeders in all of Australia, I would say they have a commodity. Now, i'm not saying that greed is a desirable trait, but if you are t...

Re: Help.... Wet bib and neck

Yep, they can be sloppy drinkers. I have one that never spills a drop and two that are absolute slobs. Never have any success changing the bowl height. They get marginally better as they get older, but really only a bit. I have heard stories about constantly wet chins getting a mold growth, but have...

Re: Fair price?

Since I have 2 dogs that I show regularly, and a 3rd on some occasions, I really hate Cindy's breakdown. We are into the category of I don't want to know the real cost of getting my dogs to a CH. We are now onto a GCH for my two males. Yipes. I do understand your breakdown though Cindy. And you have...

Re: Help...Puppy low protein food

I guess I would question the low protein diet plan. I actually go in the other direction to some degree, especially with pups. In my opinion, you want the proteins to ensure proper bone and muscle development. As they age, you should probably dial it back a bit. I agree with Constantina. Avoid grain...

Re: Spartacus our new puppy

Too funny Cindy. I took that approach a couple years back. Was successful only once...we did a show in Upstate NY and managed to squeeze in a vineyard tour and a wine tasting. Stayed at a lovely boutique hotel that was themed after the "Its a Wonderful Life" movie. Even called the Hotel Cl...

Re: Chow chow tail not always up.

Most likely it's a confidence issue, which fits into your description of the situations. More than likely this will improve with time, and as she gets more accustomed to being exposed to different scenarios. If you are really concerned, you could try to work on the memory reflex. Simply place her ta...

Re: Some people make me want to scream

Yep, happens all the time. Sadly, they are always the people that don't have dogs at home. And it really doesn't matter what breed of dog they suddenly approach. My dogs are really well socialized, and love all people. But as WE know, Chows have limited peripheral vision. A side 'hug' takes them com...

Re: Is a Chow Chow right for me and my situation?

Yep, that's all well and fine, but I don't recommend flipping a Chow onto his back to show him who's in charge. I well conditioned or submissive Chow may accept that behavior, but most will resist physical dominance. Maybe Kingfluffs 'success' comes out of the fact that they are mixes. My Chows are ...

Definitely need some pics, but a 6 month old pup shouldn't be shedding puppy coat yet. Even if shorter fur, not a smooth coated chow, he will retain that fluff ball look closer to a year old.

Re: Is my chow a pure bred chow?

Cream chows are notorious for not carrying the color through their mouths and noses. This does not mean she is not a purebred chow. It actually happens more often than when they do keep solid color traits. Most people that show their cream chows do so before they are a year old, because the nose col...

Re: New Member and a newbie owner =)

Heavier pups can take longer for the ears to stand. It would be unusual if they didn't unless you feel and actual 'break' in the ear. It's not technically a break, but you would feel a soft spot in the bone structure. 6 - 9 months would not be uncommon with a dog that has a thicker ear mass. You cou...
