Re: Collar Issue

The harness needs to be fitted properly as well. Shiloh backed out of hers in a park a long time ago but my Chow Chow friends quickly surrounded her to prevent her getting away.

Re: Collar Issue

We have used the harness for our Chows but have heard good things about the rolled collar. When our dogs are contained within in our home and yard, they do not have the harness or collar on. We have a GSD now and he is collar/harness free when home.

Re: Rough playing

They don't appear to be appropriate play mates. If the pek is stressed, I don't think the attempt to get them to play is worth it. Your Chow Chow needs another bigger playmate and the Pek find a smaller dog to interface with. Five years old isn't too old, I think but maybe the Pek just doesn't want ...

Re: Chow Life changes

Our first Christmas with Kohana and without our Chowboy, Nahkohe. We took Kohana and Shiloh for a neighborhood Christmas Day walkie. Kohana is stubborn and won't walk too far ahead of Shiloh - he just sits and waits for her to catch up. On the other hand, Nahkohe would run with total disregard if Sh...

Re: Chow Life changes

Today I was listening to Pandora when Chasing Cars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUahJpGi-VQ started playing…I looked at the calendar. It has been 3 months since I lost my beautiful Chowboy, Nahkohe. The first few weeks after losing Nahkohe, Shiloh was depressed but she was also having issues with ...

Re: new puppy chows with older chows advice please

After our Chowboy, Nahkohe went to Rainbow Bridge, we adopted a German Shepard mix - he was about 9 weeks old. Our senior Chow, Shiloh, was not pleased to have this bundle of energy pestering her at every turn. At first we kept them separate or if they were in the same room, made sure the puppy didn...

Re: Chow Chow Fest in Northern California 2014

Thank you, Zhuyos mom! Yes, it was a fantastic day! \:D/ I owe a lot to you for your support in making this event happen while I struggled with the grief of losing my Nahkohe. All the Chow Chows there were excellent Chow Chow ambassadors and took all the ooh's and ahh's from the passerby's in stride...

Re: Boogie is now free from all his pain

Run free, Boogie...I know that you and my Nahkohe will be with us in spirit this coming Sunday. Linda & Caitlyn - I am still raw over losing Nahkohe but the heartache will ease a little with each day. You cared, loved, and took care of Boogie and he knew that every day until his last breath. Tak...

Re: Run free, Mister Nahkohe

One week ago today, my Nahkohe went to Rainbow Bridge...I didn't know how much heartache I could handle...it seems like yesterday that we picked him up from the airport after a flight from Canada when he was 9 weeks old. I put my hand on the carrier door and there was this immediate Chowling lick of...

 Nahkohe, Mister Nahkohe, or Mr. N as some of the older cc.org posters might remember him as, is not doing well...When I started this post, it was mostly realizing how the life of our Chow Chow changes and that Shiloh has lost her hearing...never in my thoughts I would be posting Nahkohe's heal...

Re: Chow Life changes

this it tough...Nahkohe stopped eating after his seizure. He was so lethargic for the next couple of days. His vet assumed a brain tumor might be the problem and decided to do chest x-rays to see if any other issues existed. Unfortunately, the x-rays showed a large mass near his lung. We took him to...

:( I'm so sorry for your loss, Karin. I hope you will be able to rescue or foster at some point...so many out there that need the love and shelter that some one like yourself can provide.

Re: Chow Life changes

Another Chow life change...today, my Nahkohe suffered a seizure. Hubby was home and on the back deck he heard some thrashing about. Nahkohe was having a seizure - stiff front legs, head rolled back, twitching eyes. Of course, Jeff dropped everything and made room in his truck to transport Nahkohe. H...

Re: How much walking is too much walking?

Early on - not sure who advised it on this site - but I was told that for their first year their walks should be shorter (like less than 30 minutes) because their bones & muscles are still developing. I remember taking our two out for about a 2 block walk when Nahkohe was just maybe 4 months old...

Re: Where have the others gone

This past 1.5 year included many personal changes for us - mainly, me with my father's passing and needing to step up to helping Mom with everything. For the past four years, I got deeply involved with a local non-profit cat & dog animal rescue (like Board member president & managing their w...

Chow Life changes

I joined cc.org about 11 years ago when Shiloh rescued us by seeking refuge in our backyard. We thought she was a Pom but our neighbor told us it was a Chow. After putting out flyers and asking neighbors, we figured she was "dumped" due to the ticks and fleas Shiloh had on her. She must ha...

I think you should scroll through the posts in the "Best of" section of the Nutrition, Diets and Food forum. I don't know what a rice diet consists of...but hot spots are a fairly good indication that there might be a food allergy problem. I don't know what is available in your area but he...

Re: New Chow Owner Needs Direction

Chows might be okay for short distance bursts of energy but they are not the longer endurance dogs. Also, remember that Chows aren't going to do well in warm weather - so depending on your environment, you need to make sure you don't task them to do too much in warm weather. For us warm weather mean...

Re: Making Chicken jerky

Sorry I did not reply back! The brand is NESCO and the cost was around $60 via Amazon.com. It has 5 trays. But I think any decent DE-hydrator would be sufficient. Since making my first batches of chicken jerky, I have also been doing the beef. I use the beef less often than the chicken and I try to ...

Re: Healthy Treats

With the many issues of giving any treats made in China, I started dehydrating chicken or beef for my two Chowdren. I buy skinless chicken breasts from a local market and slice it into very thin pieces. I purchased a nice dehydrator and a decent knife (to cut the meat). It takes me about 1/2 hour to...
