Re: Idenfying Rough/Smooth
Cam thinks that smooth coated means cooler for his region (ok, i'm assuming a lot there, but that's my best guess). Just to debunk that a bit, my smooth chow overheated last summer at a show when the other 2 were fine. I think its more related to the breathing pattern. Once the smooth got a bit hot,...

Re: Chow + Children
That's a good point Mother Moose. The dog may be absolutely socialized, trained, and perfectly well tempered. But you never know what's going to happen with a child. A startling movement, a quick screech in excitement of seeing a pretty dog, or a misplaced finger or arm. I think we can agree that th...

Nice citation Cam. Of course Mendelian is based on human genetics. And its since been debunked when it comes to hair color...Still I like the reference.

Re: Rescue full blooded foster Chow! Can't figure out his color? Anyone know?
Agreed. He is naturally a blue chow. Black chows have a more solid dark shade, while blues tend to have a silver hue towards the fur tips. He was likely left outside in the sun. This is called coppering and the sun has bleached out his fur.

Re: Sensitive tummy dry dog food?
I like the Merrick. My 3 chows are on the Bison and Sweet Potato blend. They like it and tolerate it well. I will say though, its more of a supplement for them than a full meal. They all get actual chicken breast (boiled) or ground turkey for dinner. They get the kibble to ensure they actually chew ...

Re: Chow fur
It's fairly common for Chows with a more 'closed' facial structure to have this issue. Since he already has had an entropion issue, I am guessing that is more likely his overall structure. That is also the reason you will see so many of us encouraging 'how to correctly approach a Chow' in the social...

Nice replies Cam (long time no see, good to hear from you) and Ski. Those are responsible responses. Of course many dogs,, and yes even Chows have no issues with Children. But it is always good to be responsible. Sane people don't leave infants or toddlers unattended under any circumstances, and cer...

Re: Some guidance....
I agree with Cindy on the tail set. It's an 'action' photo though, so hard to tell with any certainty. I can't see the ears as they would lay normally and the front paws are separated in the sand. At 1st glance, I would also suggest that he is a mix, but more photos may tell a different story. Just ...

Re: New chow puppy problem
What you have there is a dog that wants your attention. So please don't confuse that with aggressive behavior. You certainly should give him the attention that he wants, but you need to redirect the method in which he gets your to react to him. For now, I would pet him and give him a belly rub if he...

Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
You're right on the OFA's 612. And Nationals...April...hmmm. I might have to give that some thought. Doing Nov 12, 13 in Boxborough MA. Small show, and only doing Toby. Still waiting on his brother to actually show up at an event. His father showing fairly regularly now, so that is a plus. Still, th...

Re: My Chow Chow keeps getting attacked by other dogs
LOL, probably not a big help, but as a Chow owner I have a strong dislike for French Poodles anyway. Just plain nasty dogs....LOL. And people complain that Chows don't listen. They should try a poodle. Absolutely obnoxious dogs with a bad attitude. I really don't think having him altered is the answ...

Re: How common is food aggression in chow chows?
Here is a suggestion. I have owned Chows for over 20 years. Currently have 2 males and a female. None of them are altered. Despite the reputation, never a single problem with food aggression. Start when young obviously. Place 1/2 of the feeding amount in the bowl. And as others have said, have the d...

Re: Do puppies look like their parents?
612 has it right. Sometimes you have a real resemblance to the sire and damn. Other times they pick up looks from 4 or 5 generations ago. Chows have very few dominant genes. At least ones that go to each generation. Color has very little holding power and you could end up with a black chow pup out o...

Re: Raine - Our New Puppy
I hear ya. Sedation on Chows is a scary scenario. Glad to hear he did well. Really, a top vet is so important. Experience with Chows is a must. I drive 45 minutes each way to our vet just because they have so much experience with the breed. They also handle the dogs from our breeder on 2/3rds of our...

Congrats on the wins Cindy. Sorry for the late response, I really haven't been of the forums much lately. Even when I do get in, trying to avoid confrontations with posters that have no experience and are offering poor advice.

Re: My Chow Chow keeps getting attacked by other dogs
Chows walk with a confidence and attitude that confuses other breeds. Not really sure about the smell, but I do know they don't get that 'wet dog' smell, so there may be something to that. I don't really think that fixing a dog will change it. So, if your dog is breeding quality, I wouldn't consider...

Re: Chow puppy with pink nose?
Pink nose is actually very common in Cream chows. It is not a mutated gene, but it tends to become more prominent because Cream is not a dominant color and carries a recessive gene. It also common in younger pups, and frequently darkens with age as does the mouth. It may not be the most desirable tr...

Re: 5 Month old Chow biting
The dog is asserting himself as the ring leader. Leave him in his house collar and leave a leash attached to it. Whenever he starts misbehaving, tell him 'No' in a firm, authoritative voice. He should know some basic commands by this point, so after the 'No', tell him to sit, lie, or down in that sa...

Re: Adopted chow loves play biting
Jumping into this one a bit late, sorry, been busy of late. One suggestion for a nipping Chow pup...do away with tug of war. Not a behavior you want to encourage. It teaches the dog to hold a bite and not let go...bad result if he happens to nip at your arm. For supplements, its never a bad idea to ...

Re: Grooming Routine*
Aware this post is over a month old, hopefully you figured some of this out by now. If not though, you will want at least a pin brush or a slicker to groom the puppy fur. If you have time, do daily just to get her used to it. With a pup, you should bath her no more than every 2 -3 weeks unless she g...
