Re: Males fighting

There are a couple things you could try, but males together may just decide that they don't want to get along. In that case, I would follow Cindy's comment that they just need to be separated. I separate my males completely when I am not home and don't take the chance. Overall I think they like each...

Re: 2 puppies, should I feed big one more?

Feeding recommendations are always based on size/weight. With any reputable dog food they will specify...a 40 lb dog should be fed x amount...a 20 lb dog should be fed y amount. Follow those instructions as a base. Then observe YOUR dogs. Chows do come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Look at the d...

Re: Mouth cancer

612 has the right advice. I would seek out an AKC show. They have semen collectors available at most shows. They should also be pretty learned on circumstances since they are generally Vet run. And quite honestly, since its their business they do so at reasonable rates. The hardest part might actual...

So sorry to hear the news Cindy. You are right though, that is one of the unforeseen circumstances we have been preaching as a positive for crate training. Sad that you are giving a 1st hand testimonial.

Re: Male or female as second dog (puppy)?

There can be problems with any dogs, even more so with multiple dogs of the same *Censored Word*. Quite honestly, you just never know. Dogs are of course pack animals, and they compete for position. Even with strong leadership, they can try to 1 up each other. Frequently that involves arguments, aft...

I cant send my dogs to London, but could offer a few shots for 'stand in' type roles.

Re: Puppy Coat Changing Texture?

Nope. Those are called guard furs. they will start on the middle of the back and run along the spine. they are the beginning of adult fur, and will remain the coarsest of his fur types. he will begin to shed the puppy fur and take on more of a 'hair' quality as he ages. this could take anywhere from...

Re: Blue Merle Chow Chow

Recognized or not is not the point. Read some of the earlier posts on this topic. Merle Chows are a genetic defect. Most are deaf or blind, sometimes both. It is 100% unethical to continue to breed merle chows. Those that support such breedings are furthering a horrible practice.

Re: Male or female as second dog (puppy)?

Nas, I don't think I read your post incorrectly. I completely understand the risk of anesthesia and surgery to a Frenchie. Chows have similar risks as I would guess do other breeds. I probably wasn't real clear in my intention on my response. I don't think a male Frenchie imposes much of a risk to a...

Re: Show chow question

Very true Applebear. Most creams are campaigned to the CH before they are a year old. Only the top Creams hold the nose color beyond that. And there are always those breeders that try to categorize their litters with exotic colors (silver is a great example). Reds are still the most desirable, and a...

I have the same problem with photo size. I email them to myself, which limits the size, and then save the attachment for upload.

Would love to see a few pics. Not sure I have ever heard of Apricot tips. Might be a shaded red coat, but I would like to see.

Re: New puppy arriving in January

You have a Smooth Applebear, that can really make all the difference. Irfish, you don't mention whether they are same *Censored Word*, etc. That can make things more difficult, but not impossible. A 3 year old is going to be pretty established in the home, so you do want to set some boundaries. Let ...

Re: Is Emma pure breed

She is purebred. Chow pups can have the mouth coloring come in late, but with Cream Chows, it may never. That is not an indication she is not purebred. Mostly its a Cream trait, but it could also be representative of a weak gene somewhere back in the lineage. From the photos though, I would put mone...

Re: Show chow question

It's strictly a question of numbers. The majority of Chows are registered as Red. You are right about the Creams, in that most of the creams don't hold the proper nose and mouth coloring. Fawn and Blue are really more of a sub-category and most breeders don't register using those colors. My 5 Year O...

Re: Chow Chow hotspots and hair care questions

The 1st two are definitely hotspots. They are not caused by his biting at it, but are worsened by it. Usually an allergic reaction, most likely to food. You can try to find the cause by reviewing his diet. Most often its going to be an ingredient in his regular food (check for wheat or grains, meat ...

Re: Male or female as second dog (puppy)?

well, I guess I can weigh in from the other end of the universe. I currently have 3 Chows in the house. 2 males,1 female. All are unaltered. I will probably have my female fixed in the near future since she has had a few health issues and behavioral quirks recently that I do not want to risk in a br...

Sorry for the late reply, just been so busy lately... Yep, she appears to be a full bred chow in my opinion. Perhaps a bit more on the older/traditional Chow than is seen these days. Athletic build and narrower more open face is the original Chow look. Breeders have purposely bred toward a stockier/...

Re: Lethargy during estrous

Sounds like a false pregnancy. The dogs body produces hormones, etc after the estrus period to ready the body for pregnancy. This can include swelling of the teet glands even though they wont produce milk. She might even be 'resting' so she saves up the energy to birth and nurse. It's not uncommon a...

Well 1st off, as a native NE resident, I must say that it really is difficult to offer advice for a dog wearing Bronco colors...lol, JK.
