Young Dog: Stiffness in back legs?
So Louie is a young dog (apprx 1.5 years old) It seems that his reluctance to move up the back steps, frequency in lying down, and the stiffness apparent in his back legs has been concerning me (back legs stiff and shuffles when he walks, which recovers after a bit of walking around). While I intend...

Re: Paw chewing. Help.
I would suspect allergies or lawn chemicals (fertilizers or weed killers). This time of year there are molds on the lawns; my Chows have been licking and nibbling their paws. My lawn has no treatments applied but in the past where I use to live treatments were used. Lawn chemicals can cause inter d...

Re: Paw chewing. Help.
Is Louie starting to blow his coat since fall is beginning? Hair between toes and lower limbs is where my Sheena will let me know it's time for brushing and removing spring/summer coat in prep for winter coat. Sheena will lick and lick her paws and lower limbs. I just started brushing Sheena and I'...

Paw chewing. Help.
Louie, my 1 year old chow chow (DOG July 26, 2012), has just recently started to chew on his paws in a more frequent manner. The areas between his pads also appear to be slightly swollen and red. Now, we did notice this red discoloration about a month ago, but thought nothing of it. He has only rece...

Re: Help to stop licking
Wow, I didn't even think about that. Andre is an older dog and I doubt that my uncle has ever brushed his teeth or taken him for any dental care. His breath doesn't stink... Do you think that Louie can contract anything from this disturbing behavior? Luckily Andre is being picked up tomorrow. Until ...

Help to stop licking
Okay. Long story short - I've been petsitting my uncle's 200lb, 7 year old lab/mastiff mix and Louie, our now 52lb 10 month old chow just adores him and they play constantly. We've been babysitting for just over a week now and Louie has developed an obsessive habit of licking the drool around Andres...

Re: Head Collar
By recently I meant he has only attended ONE class. He is THREE MONTHS old. And the trainer did not suggest the head collar.
Thank you for the 'advice.'
Louie is doing much better on the easy walk on my own personal choice. Cannot wait for his next class.

Re: Head Collar
Merlin: I understand that training is involved. Louie is currently and recently enrolled in a training course. But to state that he needs training but not offering any method on HOW to properly do that was a little rude. Don't assume training is not attempted without reading previous posts. I only s...

Re: Head Collar
I still use a harness for casual training, but he pulls like a maniac with a harness. The head collar is great for walks, and I may not have to use it as an adult if he learns to stop pulling with it.

Head Collar
So I'm experimenting using a head collar with Louie, so that when he is about 60-70lbs I can manage his pulling (I am a small person). I'm wondering if anyone else has ever used one on a chow before? Day 1 with the head collar went well! While at times he tried to pull it off his snout, he otherwise...

Re: Puppy Nipping: I've had enough
I'd like to think I am alpha, or that he considers me as such. He automatically sits and waits until told so when waiting for his meals/water. He does tend to listen to me more acutely then Peter (mostly because he's easy to anger). He sits when told very easily, even in public. He just cannot grasp...

Puppy Nipping: I've had enough
Okay, so Louie is 3.5 months old now and he STILL cannot grasp the idea that biting and mouthing our SKIN is NOT OKAY. I've tried every trick anyone has told or taught me, including: 1. saying OUCH or giving a sharp NO which is usually countered with a harder more excited biting. Or he barks at me. ...

Picture sent from my boyfriend while I was at school all day on my terrible Tuesday classes. How could you leave this face at home? I don't know how I do it. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p309/glue_stick/louieathome.jpg So its that time of the year (in which I may not be able to enjoy. Hurrican...

Re: Small lump on puppy's lower abdomen
I have seen pictures of veterinary photos that would indicate the possibility of a lost teste, which is why (besides a hernia) it was something I thought it could be. Yes, the lump is very soft and mobile. It is still there (just checked a couple of minutes ago). He doesn't seem hindered by whatever...

Re: Small lump on puppy's lower abdomen
Yes, I am able to call/e-mail them at any time. I figured I'd aske everyone here first - wanted to make sure this wasn't a amateur question/concern first. We haven't had a puppy in a long time. Most of our dogs were adopted - all in which were about 2 years in age and fixed.

Re: Small lump on puppy's lower abdomen
Thank you for the response. I did feel for his testes and to my knowledge, they both appear to be there. That was my first thought (a lost teste). Since it doesn't seem to be a horrendous problem, I will wait for his next scheduled appt. I'll continue to keep an eye on it regardless and see if it co...

Small lump on puppy's lower abdomen
Hi, Louie, my 13 week old puppy, has just newly acquired a small lump on his lower abdomen near his penis. I noticed it this morning while playing with him on the floor. I took a few pictures. The lump can be moved and feels kind of squishy and it doesn't seem to bother him at all when I touch it or...

Re: fine corn as food for chow
It by no means will harm your chow, but corn as a food carries little important nutritional value (it is never completely broken down through the digestive system anyway, and you may notice larger pieces in the stool) and is used in many bagged dog foods as a filler . As long as their other nutritio...
